POPE Benedict has said there is substantial scientific proof of the theory of evolution.

The Pope, speaking as he was concluding his holiday in northern Italy, also said the human race must listen to "the voice of the Earth" or risk destroying its very existence.

In a talk with 400 priests, the Pope spoke of the current debate raging in some countries, particularly the US and his native Germany, between creationism and evolution.

“They are presented as alternatives that exclude each other,” the Pope said.

“This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favour of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.”

But he said evolution did not answer all the questions and could not exclude a role by God.

“Above all it does not answer the great philosophical question 'where does everything come from?'“

His comments appear to be an endorsement of the doctrine of intelligent design.

Climate change

Benedict is wrapping up a three-week private holiday in the majestic mountains of northern Italy where residents are alarmed by the prospect of climate change that can alter their way of life.

A full transcript of the two-hour event was issued yesterday.

“We all see that today man can destroy the foundation of his existence, his Earth,” he said.

“We cannot simply do what we want with this Earth of ours, with what has been entrusted to us,” said the Pope, who has been spending his time reading and walking in the scenic landscape bordering Austria.

World religions have shown a growing interest in the environment, particularly the ramifications of climate change.

The Pope, leader of some 1.1 billion Roman Catholics worldwide, said: “We must respect the interior laws of creation, of this Earth, to learn these laws and obey them if we want to survive.”

“This obedience to the voice of the Earth is more important for our future happiness ... than the desires of the moment.

"Our Earth is talking to us and we must listen to it and decipher its message if we want to survive,” he said.

Last April the Vatican sponsored a scientific conference on climate change to underscore the role that religious leaders around the world could play in reminding people that wilfully damaging the environment is sinful.

See, he didn't say "it might be true", he said that the scientific evidence is conclusive

Which has some profound implications on Christianity - there was no Garden of Eden, no Adam & Eve, no flood and no Noah's Arc and the list goes on. Because once you admit evolution is real, half of the bible becomes nothing more but a fairy tale, including a significant part of its philosophical and moral implications...

With the recent month passing, I'm starting to believe in Evolution(Adapting to your environment, Survival of the fittest) and most recently the billion year old world theory. When I had the chance to think deeply about evolution and the world being billions of years old, I started to say to myself ay, this does not in any way contradict or refute Christianity, if anything it give it credibility. Science and religion go hand in hand. There are a couple of agnostics and theists that have also accepted that, with me being one of those new members. But like always people like ThaG can't or refuse to understand that.

i wouldn't say anti-biblical but unlike other Christian religions we dont follow the bible word for word and take it literally. Id say we would probably be the most open to adapting some form of evolution as truth. theres no way in hell evangelical or even many protestants would even entertain that thought.

Yes, because:

1. if he says evolution is not real, he's lying

2. if he says it is real, he is being hypocritical because once you admit to yourself that evolution is real, the fundamentals of Christian religion are not just shaken, but totally destroyed

BTW, I am ready to bet that most of the people on the top of organized religion and most theologians do not believe in any god, they're smart enough/studied the subject for long enough to have figured that out long ago

@JLMACN, I came to the realization that in the bible when God created the earth in 7 days, those days may have been millenniums. By our standards our times have evolved to fit with modern standardized time, the gregorian calendar, the 24 hour day period. There could have been hundreds, thousands, millions, billions even trillions of years in between each of those days. With many of those long intervals between God's "days" animals could have evolved . In the bible a day could be a thousand years to God. Whose to say what a day was? God wasn't specific about how he created animals, just that he created everything out of nothing by his own will (I can already see the Christianity Creationists versus Evolution, please don't start I'm an advocate of both). Hardcore Christian Fundie Creationist are quick to rebuke and deny anything in association to science. Yet they neglect the fact that our Very God is so powerful he allowed the laws of science to be written.

The only reason that science and religion in today's world cannot go hand in hand is simply man's ego, i.e ThaG and the typical arrogant Christian creationist. While I've slowly begun to accept some facets of evolution, I'm still a firm believer that man was made from the dust of the earth and with God's breath of life. I've learned we are to take the bible literally, NOT THEIR FIGURES OF SPEECHES, at times. At times being the operative phrase. If you need more elaboration I'd be glad to answer your questions.

I was at a pentocostal church today, which I think I'll be going to weekly now, although I disagree with many of their doctrines I kinda like that church. But the pastor made me chuckle, he's putting evolution out as if it's in constant association with Darwinism(monkey to man theory). If he understood how modern evolution is viewed in today's world and the not general ignorant Theistic view, he'd probably see what I see, survival of the fittest/adaptation. So yeah.....

I used to laugh when 2-0-sixx would say the world is billions of years old, boy oh boy was I very arrogant and ignorant to laugh. Although I may never knew the true age, and with age dating like carbon dating, we can only speculate. When someone brings up the age of the world, I don't get into disputes cause only pure speculation can determine the age of the world.

The sabbath makes me question the billion year old theory because God rested on the seventh day. Which is why I remain skeptical. As humans we won't know everything but one thing for sure is that our minds progress. Unlike ThaG we must not remain ignorant and arrogant concerning such matters and remain open minded. If we choose to become like one ThaG, we will only regress LOL.

What about the order in which he created everything that is described in the bible and that is terribly off from what the evidence shows?

What did he made chimps and other great apes from? And why are they so similar to us in every aspect?

Hopefully you're going to evolve further and realize that OEC is just as wrong as YEC

God and evolution are incompatible.. The pope has no faith or the balls to stand up to academic dogma.. There's either one or the other. That God works through evolution concept is trash..

1. You're right that the "God works through evolution" concept is trash

2. Please, have the common sense to remove certain things from your signature that were corrected 12 minutes after they were posted without anybody making a note before that. It is dishonest and doesn't speak good about you, especially when the first part of your signature clearly reveals your fallacious way of thinking

this bastard aint bridging any gaps
Good point

On the one side we have a very solid and unified, although as of present incomplete, body of scientific theories and explanations of the world surrounding us

On the other side we have thin air called religion

Where is the gap to be filled and the bridge to be built?

The pope didn't say shit; the hand up his ass does the talking. Why does anybody need an consignment from a religious figure on a scientific theory? This does nothing for the argument, it just makes Christian say he’s a devil, his fanatics are going go to follow his new believes and others are going to say I told you so..

Real Talk man, @ThaG all I can say is BWAHAHAHAHAAHAH. I learned a fairly easy to understand lesson, Explain once, get denied once Try again. Explain Twice, get denied again Try one last time. Explain the third and final time, let them deny and fry LOL. I dunno ThaG, you're such a headache. For a guy whose scientifically sound and whose mind is to remain not only skeptical but "open minded" you're pretty much a closed minded guy. I won't resort to name callings or clowning cause I don't see the point. All I can do is *SMH* when I read your posts concerning religion.

I disagree, if you're a theist that acknowledges the power of God and his almighty will you would would also acknowledge the fact that maybe he was the one the inspired the theory of evolution(NOT DARWINSM) but what we see today as survival of the fittest and adaptation. God and Evolution can co-exist why? God can create nothing into something. He can also make something into nothing. Great example of that is ThaG LOL!
