DALLAS (Reuters Life!) - More Americans believe in a literal hell and the devil than Darwin's theory of evolution, according to a new Harris poll released on Thursday.

It is the latest survey to highlight America's deep level of religiosity, a cultural trait that sets it apart from much of the developed world.

It also helps explain many of its political battles which Europeans find bewildering, such as efforts to have "Intelligent Design" theory -- which holds life is too complex to have evolved by chance -- taught in schools alongside evolution.

The poll of 2,455 U.S. adults from Nov 7 to 13 found that 82 percent of those surveyed believed in God, a figure unchanged since the question was asked in 2005.

It further found that 79 percent believed in miracles, 75 percent in heaven, while 72 percent believed that Jesus is God or the Son of God. Belief in hell and the devil was expressed by 62 percent.

Darwin's theory of evolution met a far more skeptical audience which might surprise some outsiders as the United States is renowned for its excellence in scientific research.

Only 42 percent of those surveyed said they believed in Darwin's theory which largely informs how biology and related sciences are approached. While often referred to as evolution it is in fact the 19th century British intellectual's theory of "natural selection."

There are unsurprising differences among religious groups.

"Born-again Christians are more likely to believe in the traditional elements of Christianity than are Catholics or Protestants. For example, 95 percent believe in miracles, compared to 87 percent and 89 percent among Catholics and Protestants," according to the poll.

"On the other hand only 16 percent of born-again Christians, compared to 43 percent of Catholics and 30 percent of Protestants, believe in Darwin's theory of evolution."

What is perhaps surprising is that substantial minorities in America apparently believe in ghosts, UFOs, witches, astrology and reincarnation.

The survey, which has a sampling error of plus or minus two percent, found that 35 percent of the respondents believed in UFOs and 31 percent in witches.

More born-again Christians -- a term which usually refers to evangelical Protestants who place great emphasis on the conversion experience -- believed in witches at 37 percent than mainline Protestants or Catholics, both at 32 percent.

We're all doomed. Just think, most of those dumb fuckers will be "leading" our country at some point. Even kids today are pretty stupid for the most part, because of poor education not because of disabilities though. Our education system is really faltering right now, and our country is going to pay for it in the long run...

That's what I meant. Our country, and everyone in it, which would include you and me.

It's not much better in most parts of Europe, believe me

Only difference is that religion has been substituted with astrology, ghosts, UFO, etc., but people are still pretty dumb and gullible and when they say they accept evolution, most of them do it because that's what they were thought in school, not because they really understand it. In real life they will act just as irrationally as Americans.

Still, this is true for a smaller percentage of the population compared to USA, but it's the majority

So, I'm guessing none of you guys took this "poll"?

Have any of you ever been called to participate in such a poll?
i got a call for one, well my parents did when clinton was running...they wanted to know who they were gonna vote for but i don't think they were home...

on the subject of things that are bad for society....trying to convert everyone to believe the same thing, is fucking ignorant. and telling people they support the devil or whatever the hell, is even more stupid. what's sad, is that most atheists can at least understand that a christian is trying to say, they understand what people are brainwashed and misinterpret things....but most christians, have only lived that lifestyle, or have always thought those values and beliefs were right or were always told about a "god" whether or not it was a specific one...so they don't understand the concept of life without any god, or jesus, or moses and burning bush, or adam and eve and an apple and a snake and giant ark with lions, tigers, bears, penguins, elephants, giaraffes, wolves, birds, and all sorts of shit.......

ok, that's all.

totally wrong

atheists do not believe in the devil just as much as they do not believe in God
The root of Satanism does not believe in God or a form there of. More of a philosophical god, like the god the great philosophers used. More of that definition of a god. there's good and evil. Un-belief is the the main doctrine of the devil

^^^Exactly, it's like the matrix, God is like the Architect and the Devil is like the Oracle, God's brings balance and Satan unbalances any way possible.

everyone i talk to doesn't believe in god, i feel like our parents generation is much more religious then todays youth will ever be, not only because evolution is a sensical progression of life and the human race, but that the biblical version of the worlds history is retarded.
in my opinion the bible serves as guide to acceptable morals, the stories are meant to teach life lessons not to be interpreted as fact. This is why I laugh when I hear about people talking about finding the location of Noahs ark, because it is so ridiculous to actually believe in that story, yet people will defend the fact that the event and ark existed to the grave. To assume something is true because it was written down thousands of years ago was ignorant, especially stories about enormous floods or parting of seas.
just my opinion.
I also think christianity is especially stupid since they don't celebrate any of the holdidays in the old testament, and instead have jesus-fest twice a year in winter and spring.
