PS2,PS3 or 360 online through wi-fi connection! TUTORIAL!

This is a guide for those who don't have a highspeed internet connection at home and want to play online.

Skip step 1 if you have a wifi enabled laptop.

1. Go and buy a PCI wi-fi card. I recommend D-Link and Netgear(I've never used anything else so I don't know about others). PCI Card cost= $20.00 - $60.00 . I bought a refurbished D-Link from Frye's for $19.99

2. Buy a stronger wi-fi antenae( A directional antenae is best). The one I use has a gain of 9. The ones that come with the pci card usually have a gain of 4. The higher the gain , the more you'll be able to pick up distant signals.
Antenae cost = $19.99 - $70.00 Price depends on
amount of gain.

2a. Download NetStumbler to see if there are any availble OPEN AP's ( Access Points ) and check the signal strength . If your antenae is directional you will be able to tell which way to point your antenae based on signal strength.
Netstumbler cost = Free

If you don't pick up any signals do not read any further. This tutorial will not help you. Go get a refund for the stuff you just bought

2b. Purchase an ethernet CROSSOVER CABLE to connect your PS2 to your computer without a router. Cable cost = $10.00 @ RadioShack

3. You should have an available pci slot available if you take off the case cover to your computer. Install the card and antenae.

4. Go to the control panel and open up Network Connections. You will see two icons. One for your wifi card and one for your ethernet card.

Highlight both, right click and select "Bridge connections" This allows your ethernet card to access the internet via the wifi connection. Now connect your PS2 to your computers ethernet card.

5.Once you find a strong open connection to connect to, close Netstumbler. Sometimes your internet connection will not work if Netstubler is running.

6. Put your favorite online game into the PS2 and run the online configuration. Set everything to AUTO if you are connecting to an OPEN access point.

7. HAVE FUN!
Total cost after taxes about $60

I messed around with a psp for a second and I don't recall any auto config on it. You would have to know the exact SSID you want to connect to , and it's IP address etc. You definitely would need a stronger antenae for it, and I just so happen to know where you can find a tutorial to mod your PSP with a stronger antenae. That's if you are brave enough to break it open and modify it. Depending on the type of antenae you mod it with you can get signals from very far away. The tutorial can be found here.
www.fromtheshadows.tv

it is a video tutorial , so you get to see exactly how it is done. It is in one of the box episodes on the right of the page. I don't remember exactly which one, maybe episode 3. I dunno. I aint going there to find out right now. But there is only 6 episodes. so it aint hard to find. Good Luck. And watch the other episodes , it's some good stuff on that site.

Why would you need to connect the ethernet cord from the laptop to the PS2? If you already have a wireless network you should have a wireless router and can connect your PS2 to that either thorugh an ethernet cable or wirelessly through a wireless bridge/game adapter or the method described in this thread........

Turn off the Windows firewall (it's not all that secure any way) and any other firewall you may have. You may also have to go the network wizard and setup the network again and make sure file and printer sharing is on. Because your PC treats the PS2 as another computer on the network. When the wizard asks you to choose your connection make sure you choose the wireless one. Then bridge it. However , I posted this when I had XP Professional Service pack 1 installed . I upgraded to XP SP2. and have had problems from time to time. But it works. Or you can break bread and get one of the wireless game routers. This was for the ones who didn't have internet access at all.

^No. About online! If you get an error when you try to hook up the PS2 online saying "There was an IP conflict on the machine" or " IP already in use"
here's how to fix it.

==============
1. click the start button>All Programs>Accessories> Click on command prompt to open it. Or just click Start Button>Run and type in cmd to open it that way.

2.Once the command prompt is open , type ipconfig /all (make sure there is a space after ipconfig) You will then see some information about your , Subnet mask, Default gateway, and DNS servers. Write down this info. This is not your actual IP that's displayed to the world, its your local IP on your machine and it would be something like
192.168.1.30 or 192.168.1.101. The conflict happens because your PS2 is trying to use the same local IP address as the computer. Which happens when you use the autoconfig option when configuring the PS2. You will have to do it manually if you get this error. So choose that OPtion instead.

3. (Playstation Configuration) The IP address the Playstation will use will be one digit less than what the PC is using. For example. If your IP is 192.168.1.101 , configure the PS2's IP to read 192.168.1.100 . End of conflict. But now you have to enter the subnet mask as well , which should be, 255.255.255.0 . Now enter the Default gateway IP(if asked, I can't remember now) it should be similar to your IP 192.168.1.XX(or something like that) Finally enter the DNS IP and save the PS2 configuration. It sounds like a lot but it's quick and easy to fix, Just write down the ipconfig /all information , and manually enter it into the PS2. Your done. And don't forget that you need a Cat 5 "CROSSOVER CABLE" to make this work. an ordinary ethernet cable WILL NOT work.

is this only for playstation 2 or doe sit work for newer consoles like xbox 360, ps3, and the wii?

It will work for them all...as long as you have an open Wi-Fi connection near...I'm now playing the 360 online...with the same exact setup.
