A man who handed over a counterfeit million-dollar bill to a cashier at a Pittsburgh supermarket and asked for change has been arrested.

Police told the BBC the man became abusive when a manager at the Giant Eagle store confiscated the fake note.

He broke an electronic funds-transfer machine at the counter and reached for a scanner gun, said police.

There is no real US bill worth $1m (£490,000). Since 1969, the $100 note has been the highest in circulation.

The man walked into the store on the north side of Pittsburgh on Saturday evening.

After refusing to give his name to police, the suspect, who was not carrying identification, was charged with forgery and criminal mischief.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard told the BBC News website: "The John Doe [unidentified male] became irate when staff refused to change his $1m bill and damaged a piece of equipment. Officers arrested him."

He was detained at Allegheny County Jail.

Police are investigating whether the bogus note was among a batch distributed last year as a publicity stunt by a Dallas-based religious ministry.

I work at a movie theater so we see a lot of large bills and we use those pens to see if they are real or not on $50.00s and $100.00s. Like about a month ago a guy buys six tickets (cost $58.50) so he hands me a $100.00 and is looking around all funny like, so I grab the pen and I'm about to use it when the guy is like "Oh wait, wait, I don't wanna break that, I forgot I got $20.00s." I kind of laughed and handed him back the $100.00 and he gave me three $20.00s which I checked just to be an ass. I could really careless, it's just if we except a fake $50.00 or $100.00 we can get written up. It was funny how nervous dude got.

I also like when folks try to use the fake credit cards. "Your going to have to type the number in" then they hand me a card with no raised numbers and feels like a subway card lol.

well, it depends if your bank has personal safes. (usually in the back, and you cant crack them anyway as they need individual keys) those safes probably contain more money than the actual safe that carries the banks money.

and yeah, i had to count that 1/4th of a mil in cash every god damn day.
fucking working at a bank, man.

if i learned anything from that shit, its how to use a money machine like a pro.

if you can get a safe open at a bank and leave with a 1/4 of a mil in cash you are the best bank robber ever...usually robbers get the dye pack lol

i fucking HATE money counters that arent bill-sensitive.

nothign worse than counting and wrapping hella fucking money and youre missing 2-3 20 dollar bills and a 5 or some stupid shit.

shit used to piss me off so much i just wanted to be like take it out my check okay? fuck i dont wanna do this shit again. i make that same amount its going to take me to find it anyway.

when i was doing banking at the stadium for NFL games their bitch ass non-bill-sensitive machines had me there till 1AM sometimes (check out: 10:00pm) until i got really anal about checking the stacks

and the more anal you get about double-triple checking the more youre in fucking utter disbelief when something goes wrong

Yea I feel you on that Gas........Diebold was always doing some update shyt on our counters....without a doubt..every time they would come and re-program it to read a new bill they just released they shyt would fuck up. Arvest made us use the "Suspect Bill" feature. I hated that...it would stop every few seconds and we would have to check the bill and then get the Manager to sign off on it.......It made doing any real work almost impossible....coarse they never saw it that way...lol

The smart people use washed out fives and print a 100 on it so that it will pass the pen test. Have you ever seen 100 with teh wrong face as the water mark? I worked with some dumb ass people, one of my workers accepted a 100 that was printed on a wrinkled up piece of paper and it didn't even pass the pen test or look close to real. When I worked at big 5 too someone acepted 4 fake 10's, who makes fake 10's anyways? The manager was counting their register at the end of the night and it was so bad that he felt the difference without even looking at the money.

YEAH I SEEN BOGIES HAVE THE WATERMARK AND PASS THE PEN TEST...BUT WHEN YOU FEEL THE ACTUAL BILL IT IS TO THICK AND DOESNT FEEL LIKE REAL MONEY...BUT FOOLS IS STUPID WHY MAKE HUNDRED DOLLAR BILLS? SHITS ALWAYS SCRUTINIZED AT THAT AMOUNT, EVEN 50'S...I WOULD SAY 20'S WOULD BE THE WAY TO GO...DOESNT BRING TOO MUCH ATTENTION AND IF YOU HIT A TACO BELL OR SOME FAST FOOD JOINT AT LUNCH TIME, YOU COULD CRACK THOSE ALL AFTERNOON.
