I was at a Disc Makers' seminar last night and dude brought up somethings about what their requirements are for artwork. He said that they recommend everything be sent to them as an Illustrator file (though they'll except PSD files). He also said that one of the reasons for this is because of fonts. He said that Photoshop's fonting is not great for print.

So my question is, how true is this? I know that Illustrator is better for fonts and whatnot, but is there a big difference in print. Also, how many of you guys do all of your work in Photoshop, do you font/text in Illustrator, or use a combination of both?

i dont even know how to use illustrator lol...i know, i should. ive used it like 3 times lol.
Yeah, I've never gotten into it either. Always wanted to, but never took the time to sit down and learn it. Now I don't have the program anymore. Time to spend more money.

Illustrator is great for vectors. Photoshop is good for everything else. For text I like to use PS because they have great options for it but I'm pretty sure it is actually lower quality then say Illustrator or InDesign. But like I said the options in Illus. and ID suck ass why don't they expand it more.

Maybe he means illustrator has an advantage because you can convert fonts to vector art and then resize them and shit. I donno how that would change print quality tho, I never noticed. Maybe vector art just prints better then pixel art.

if im doing a logo or sumtin, I wanna manipulate the font and im definetly going into illustrator because of the control you have over the letters. Illustrator is great for that. Then if you prefer or need to you can just transfer it into photoshop

For just cd covers and big title fonts Photoshop works fine but if your doing professional magazine layouts for big companies and large print jobs(not mixtape covers and shit) they aint going to accept psds or jpegs of text. photoshop is great for imagery and is the industry standard and illustrator is the best for text and things especially things that have alot of type. photoshop also got a type limit. they aint made for the same thing.

Ive worked with diskmakers before and they are pretty picky....you can only use THEIR templets and they rejected my work because it was psd. I then sent them a Indesign file and was all good. For big text, your ok with photoshop, but for small text you should use Illustrator or InDesign..

Indesign is good for the printers out there because you can "package" the file.. which it saves your design file, all the picture links and the fonts into one file so when the printer gets it he doesnt have to worry about fonts or broken links anything...Printers i dealt with usually want the file in a .tif format or a .pdf which is the safe route.
Gotta be careful with the printers, sometimes theyll charge you for them having to change the file format...

i dont know why one would be better that the other...

i use mostly illustrator and if im sending something to be printed i just change the text to a vector then i dont have to worry about font files

I use PS mainly for photo editing/retouching, backgrounds and ILL for logo's and stuff.
After I finished the stuff in PS/ILL i place it in InDesign and add the (plain) text.

Export as High Quality PDF and send it out....
