Today I just got prescribed Paxil for my anxiety and panic attacks. Does anybody in here currently take or has ever taken it before? Please no "I fucking love that shit man, snorted 3 pills, smoked a blunt and scratched my ass on it too" type of responses, just serious stories or info. I've done my research online about it but I figured since I post on the siccness so often you guys are all like an extended version of my friends even if we have never met.

Was your experience good or bad?

Stories or situations you found yourself in or someone in after they used.

Etc.

Any help or input would be great, thanks.

It sounds as if you have done your research. I would just like to mention though, that Paxil is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). SSRIs need to be taken on a regular basis (everyday), unlike benzodiazepines (Xanax) which are usually prescribed to be taken only when needed (in time of a panic attack or great anxiety).

SSRIs also need time to work. They usually "kick in" after about 4-6 weeks. So if you don't feel a difference after a week or two, don't give up yet. Take your everyday dosage and wait 4-6 weeks.

This is just general info about SSRIs. I have never personally been prescribed Paxil, so I can't tell you how effective it is. I do know that its commonly prescribed for depression, anxiety, and panic disorder.

flush it down the toilet and tell them you want benzodiazepines
Benzos are highly addictive. I would not recommend them to anyone who has dependency/addiction issues.

They are great for preventing panic attacks. If you feel anxious, you take a Xanax and within 30minutes you're calm and confident. The problem is dependence. If you don't have issues with addiction, then it is truly a life saver.

ssris (thanks for the acronym, too stoned) arent gonna eliminate your panic attacks and anxiety, i speak from first hand knowledge

ssris are better for depression
I agree to some extent. But, everyone is different. Some SSRIs are also great for anxiety. As I've mentioned though, the problem is the amount of time it takes for the drug to take effect (4-6 weeks). Most people take them for a few weeks and give up because they don't feel a difference, unaware of the fact that it may take up to 2 months for it to work.

yeah, but were all adults here. i think. i mean you dont give xanax to kids or people with dependency issues which is prolly why he got paxil from the jump.

but ive had anxiety and panic attacks and like you said, benzos made my life alot more functional. the one time i took ssris i woke up 3 weeks into taking it and didnt want to smoke weed anymore and i was all happy for some reason. it frightened the fuck out of me and i flushed all the pills down the toilet and smoked a blunt

so id love to just say ssris are completely useless and the devil but im sure they work for SOMEONE, the way he explained it sounds like benzos would be better.

I agree. If indeed his main issue are panic attacks, then benzos are the way to go. Given, he has no issues with substance abuse/dependence.

I would also look into the root of his anxiety and panic attacks. It could be generalized anxiety, social anxiety, PTSD, etc. Depending on what his issue is, the combination of therapy and medication could be most effective.

HEARD PAXIL GOT BAD SIDE EFFECTS AND ITS FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE BIPOLAR
SSRIs aren't prescribed for bi polar disorder. You heard wrong.

bi polar people tend to suffer from depression alot so rwashing youre right
Mood stabilizers such as Lithium are prescribed for Bi Polar Disorder.

well yeah, but if we wanted to be completely honest, we could say anxiety can be treated without ssri's or benzos and just therapy. and as a matter of fact anxiety is a part of life. i mean music artists dont go on stage blasted on valium, they just deal with the stage jitters and the anxiety of not being able to do it and put on a good show.

i only think medication should be an issue with it interferes with daily life...if its taking over your life and making you lose friends and family and you cant perform at work or do things like drive....theres some short acting anti anxiety medications that work well...

I agree, Gas. I was referring to clinically significant anxiety disorders though.

i have a personal outlook on the subject of anxiety, so it broadens a bit. we dont really know his reason for panic attacks or anxiety like you say, hell, he could be misdiagnosing himself...but yeah there wasnt alot said beyond what do you think of paxil..theres alot of factors that would make me say no to benzos for him, like if he drinks alcohol often..

dude, a doctor can prescribe whatever the fuck he thinks works.

being a doc is like having a thousand keys and one door..they narrow it down and pick the key that seems like itll work best. if it dosent work, another key.

im sure you know that

not only that, doctors commonly misdiagnose things based on the patients ability to illustrate the issue

percocet was prescribed for social anxiety at a point (whoo hooo being blasted on opiates helps me to talk to my friends!)

many medicines are prescribed for diff reasons because we all arent the same

matter fact the use of a medicine really varies from country to country

It would be very dangerous to prescribe SSRIs to someone with Bi Polar. Perhaps in combination with a mood stabilizer. I'm not sure. But Bi Polar disorder is not treated with SSRIs alone.
