Vasquez and Marquez had the better fight(s) of the year, but this one was still a great fight....

Even better is the fact that HBO's hopes and dreams were knocked the phuck out on Saturday night.
Seriously I've been looking for this day since B-Hop was robbed of his 21st successful middleweight title defense.
I have nothing against Taylor, I think he's a cool cat but I despise the people around him. HBO, Lou DiBella, and his fans.
He was never the fighter these guys made him out to be.
Watching their faces in horror was priceless....

I got to watch this fight in Cancun and I gotta say it was one of the most unbelievable fights I've ever seen. Just like everyone else, I thought Pavlik was done in the 2nd, Taylor looked phenomenal early on, unstoppable, but Pavlik has tremendous amount of heart and kept going forward, kept applying pressure on Taylor and working his jab. Taylor slowed down a bit, maybe he got tired or Pavliks punches started to effect him even though it didn't seem like Pavliks punches were that heavy, I'm not sure but whatever it was he got KTFO. Everyone at the bar was jumping and screaming, shit was crazy.

I don't know why Taylor didn't try finish him off after the 2nd round, it's like he just fell asleep from there on except for a few bursts here and there. He's an idiot for allowing Pavlik in the fight.

Cant wait till the rematch!!

Sup 2-0,

Taylor punched himself out in the 2nd round.
He managed to hurt Pavlik again after the knock down but didn't have the juice to finish him. Plus you gotta give Pavlik props for hanging in there, literately.
Taylor thinks that he punched himself out in the second round, and that he never recovered from it. I think it's bullshit.
Pavlik was in his grill and forced him to fight out a much higher pace than he's used to. That's why he was so fatigued by the time the fight was over.
Taylor is very lucky that Pavlik didn't work the body as well as he usually does. Had Pavlik gone down to the body, Taylor would've been knocked out sooner....

They're talking about a rematch at 164 lbs.
I say Pavlik by KO again.
I don't see anyone at 160 that can deal with Pavlik right now....

Sup comrade

Yeah I just watched the fight again, this time sober and calm, and Taylor may have punched himself out a bit during the 2nd which is why he couldn't finish him off that round, but I think more importantly was Taylors left hand was LOW the entire fight and Pavlik was landing that right hook all night, plus his jab was landing at will (and it had a lot of snap to it).

I didn't realize it before, but Pavlik was kinda kicking his ass after the 2nd round.

Besides that 2nd round, Pavlik simply out-boxed Taylor. And oh, Pavlik has a chin of fucking steel cuz Taylor landed some of the hardest punches I've ever seen him land.

And I agree, Pavlik KO's him again during the rematch, at 164 or at middleweight.

Yeah Taylor's always open for that right hand.
It's the punch that helped B-Hop.
But against a much stronger fighter in Pavlik, it's what did him in.

Pavlik has some heavy hands on him. His punches don't look too hard but you can definately see their impact. He reminds me of Tommy Hearns (just a little slower), a lanky fighter, but a very strong puncher.

I picked Jermain to win the fight and to me he was winning.... I think Pavlik just landed a very good right hand. Taylor was doing good... all he had to do was let them punches go like he had been doing when Pavlik kept trying to corner him. I'll pick Taylor by KO in a rematch. Pavlik can't match his hand speed...

^^I seriously think you should watch the fight again. After the 2nd round I think it's clear that Pavlik was winning most of the rounds and he was quicker to the punch, mainly his jab.

You might be right about Taylor winning the rematch though - he clearly has the power to hurt Pavlik.

I dont think Taylor has the true ability be it physical or skillfully to KO Pavlik. Kelly just has to learn to keep space. All of JT's power punches except for a few were looping and kinda wide. Pavlik's legged only wobble once. I think at a higher weight he'll have more power but Taylor wont. Taylor is already filled out, and for him to try n put on weight will just slow him down and tire him out.
Pavlik is too str8 and narrow 4 JT. JT is gonna have to fight going forward and he hasnt done that in a while. The style still favors Pavlik, in boxing and in the match up 4 these two fights, the best defense is a good+active offense. JT cant handle that jab. The only way he'll beat Pavlik is if he gets lucky like he did in the 2nd or decides to be an active fighter (this late in his career aint gonna happen but for 1 or 2 rounds @ max). 1 thing to keep in mind is Taylor wasnt able to even come close to duplicating the ability to hurt Pavlik like he did in the 2nd, and thats for a reason - part confidence but mostly style. After having watched the fight atleast 9 times already Pavlik had flashes of hurting JT several times. Kelly will simply have to jab and hold to win the next fight

Pavlik is a beast. I see him giving anybody problems at middle weight and super middle weight. I'd like to see how he handles Winky, and if he can penetrate that guard. Hopkins would approach a fight with Pavlik similar to the way he did Trinidad, except a bit smarter due to age.. Hopkins wins a U.D., Winky-Pavlik is a toss up..

Naaa I had Taylor up by like two points. He was winning... not by a landslide but he was clearly in the lead just like all 3 judges had him ahead. He got backed into the corner and got caught with a flush right hand. Pavlik is a good finisher once he had him hurt he went for the kill. Now we see why Mayweather fights the way he does. I think Taylor could knock him out.... he almost had him. We'll see what happens if/when they rematch. Hopefully it will be at the same weight.

New champ Pavlik leaves check behind at hotel

New middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik did everything he expected to do last week in Atlantic City, N.J.

He knocked out Jermain Taylor to win the WBC and WBO titles. He charmed the national media with his easy-going nature. And he made himself must-see television by putting on one of the best fights of the year.

"Pretty much everything went the way we planned it," Pavlik said Tuesday after a golf outing in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, where he was mobbed as if he were a rock star.

All of it went the way he planned, except for one fairly significant detail: Pavlik and his father, Mike Pavlik Sr., left Atlantic City without their paychecks.

Pavlik earned a gross purse of $1.05 million Saturday. After the fight, the New Jersey Athletic Board of Control presented Pavlik with a check for $666,750, which represented his share of the earnings after his managers, trainers and all fees were paid.

Pavlik's father, who along with Cameron Dunkin serves as his co-manager, received $105,000 for his services.

As the co-manager, the elder Pavlik took his check and his son's on Saturday night after the title-winning effort over Taylor.

The Pavliks had checked out of the Bally's Hotel in Atlantic City on Sunday morning and were halfway to Philadelphia for their flight to Pittsburgh when Mike Pavlik was suddenly stricken.

"It's about an hour from Atlantic City to Philadelphia and we were literally halfway there when out of nowhere, it just hit me," Mike Pavlik said. "My heart stopped and I just knew I had made a big mistake."

That mistake was leaving checks totally more than three-quarters of a million dollars on a countertop leaning against the coffee pot in their hotel room. In his excitement to get home, Mike Pavlik forgot to pick up the checks.

"I think I gave that maid probably the best tip she ever got," he said, forcing a laugh. The new champion took the news as he takes pretty much everything else: Calmly and without a lot of excitement.

He rarely gets nervous or upset, even with some of boxing's hardest punchers coming after him, and he didn't seem particularly bothered that the largest payday of his seven-year pro career had been misplaced.

"A check that big, it was going to be pretty difficult for someone to be able to cash it," he said. "I figured that somehow or other, we'd manage to either get it back or get a new one. My Dad might have been a little worried, but I wasn't too upset."

Dunkin reached Top Rank publicist Lee Samuels, who was on a private jet flying to Las Vegas along with Top Rank chairman Bob Arum and president Todd duBoef, via cellular telephone. When Samuels explained the problem, Arum agreed to stop payment on the check and issue another, though it wasn't entirely a new situation to the 75-year-old Hall of Fame promoter.

"I have never had a guy leave it in the room before, so Kelly wins a prize for that, but I've had guys lose them," Arum said. "Julio Cesar Chavez used to go out and party after fights and I can remember a lot of times he'd call me and tell me he couldn't find his check. But at least Kelly got the money he deserved."

The lost check was only part of Pavlik's adventure on his way home. Once the SUV Pavlik was riding in hit the Ohio border, he was met by a phalanx of police cars and fire trucks that gave him an official escort home to Youngstown.

Pavlik's SUV dropped into the middle of that sea of what he estimated were 30 police cars and fire trucks and made a triumphant return home.

"The support I get from the people here has always been great," Kelly Pavlik said. "But this was pretty incredible. It was nice to have those guys there for me and it made the win a little bit more special."

Mike Pavlik would like to tell people that the police were there to help protect him as he carried the large check home.

But he knows he's going to get a bad time from members of Team Pavlik for a long time to come.

"This isn't the last time this is going to come up, I'm pretty certain," Mike Pavlik said.

"We went there like it was just another fight. We did our thing the way we always do, but this one turned out to be a little more memorable in more ways than one."

^^Thats funny.

I forgot to mention that I gained a lot of respect for Taylor after losing this fight. He fought Pavlik toe to toe just like he said he would and almost took him out in the 2nd. He looked amazing early on. Boxing is funny like that, sometimes a loss makes you look better than when you were winning.

Plus in the interview he really didn't make any excuses other than saying he may have punched himself out a bit in the 2nd. He gave Pavlik his props and was very humble. Shows good sportsmanship right there..

Actually i was quite impressed with Taylor and i hate Taylor thought he was the biggest overrated piece of shit. I never seen him fight like that before. It seemed like he was in the best shape of his life. But then again ive never seen him not coming forward, i think that made him dangerous not having to chase Pavlik. Pavlik has a lot of heart but is very lucky that he got out that 2nd round. he was just standing there getting destroyed, ive never seen a fighter look as dumb founded as he did and was able to continue.

Their third fight is going to be sick. Those two go at it, I thought Marquez was the better of the two but Vasquez is relentless and dude got heart.
