ATLANTA -- In a decorated career in the boxing
ring, Paul Williams picked up three belts and the
nickname, "The Punisher." Now, Williams has a
bigger fight ahead.
After a Sunday morning motorcycle crash near
Atlanta, Williams is likely paralyzed from the
waist down.

Manager George Peterson told News 12 that
he's in the hospital with a surgery scheduled for
Wednesday. That surgery will be to stabilize the
healthy upper half of his spine by putting a
protective wall around it.

Williams was schedule to fight Saul Alvarez for
the WBC Light Middleweight title Sept. 15 at the
MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The product of the Aiken Boxing Club has a
career record of 41-2-0, with 27 knockouts.
He's the two-time holder of the WBO
Welterweight championship and has held the
WBO Light Middleweight belt once.

News 12 will keep you updated on any

Paul Williams Motorcycle Accident, Additional Details

By Osman Rodriguez

As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, former world champion Paul "The Punisher" Williams (41-2, 27KOs) crashed his motorcycle on Sunday morning near Atlanta, and Williams is likely paralyzed from the waist down. Williams was going to attend his brother's wedding on Sunday afternoon.

According to his manager/trainer George Peterson, the accident took place in Marietta. Williams tried to avoid another car, and then then the motorcycle went up an embankment and he was violently thrown from the bike. Williams severed his spinal cord after falling on his back and head.

Peterson told Augusta News 12 that he's in the hospital with a surgery scheduled for Wednesday. That surgery, says Peterson, will be to stabilize the healthy upper half of his spine by putting a protective wall around it.

Williams was scheduled to fight Saul Alvarez for the WBC junior middleweight title, as part of a pay-per-view headliner on September 15th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

I never understood why people get on motorcycles, they're a guaranteed accident waiting to happen.
for real, I personally know 5 people who have had to drop their bikes because of dumb ass people who can't drive cars around them in just the last year. Luckily 4 out of the 5 was scraps and bruises, one of them though broke both arms and a leg.

That sucks bad for Paul Williams.

and it sounds like he was trying to avoid a car. His choice was to either get hit head on with an oncoming car or do what he did and go off the embankment.

I hate motorcycles. I understand why people ride them, the thrill of it all, the excitement, etc., but I just wish people, fighters, athletes in general would look at others like Diego Corrales and think about what they're doing.

True to an extent. I ride, and thankfully have never been down in anything serious...but it's usually dumb drivers, which there is an influx of, who cause these brutal accidents.

Sad to hear this about Williams.

There is a thrill when riding a motorcycle that is hard to explain.

Damn man, it's all bad. I really couldn't believe it when I heard this and I'm still kinda in shock. Nothing but good things to say about him and his career.

On the motorcycle topic, they always say it's not if, it's when in regards to an accident. Most athletes have language in their contract that they can't even be on a motorcycle because of this. Sucks man.

Wow that sucks bigtime for Paul but glad he is alive. However I disagree and think that a lot of people who drive bikes act crazy and do to much on them and create accidents. There are also some laws that allow bikes to much freedom thus causes more accidents like swerving between cars at fast speeds. That shouldnt be allowed. Bikers get on them bikes and act a foo from what I see. I am sure there are bad car drivers also but just saying what I see when it comes to bikers. Got Em!!

A lot of people don't even look for dudes on bikes. I know a grip of people that change lanes without even looking over their shoulder or it's a quick, half assed glance at best. It's harder to see a bike in your blind spot.

My homeboy actually had just bought a new SL500 Mercedes, damn thing was like 95k and just drove it off the lot in San Diego. He swerved to miss a pothole and almost took out a bike cop in the next lane in his blind spot. We didn't even know the fool was there. Had it been a car, there would've been a better chance of him seeing him

Paul Williams "I'll Walk Again"
Former world champ, Paul Williams, has made
his first public statement since suffering a
career-ending motorcycle injury Sunday that will
likely leave him paralyzed from the waist down.
"[Doctors] told me there's a very slight chance of
walking, because the spine was, like, crushed, or
whatever," Williams told 11Alive News in Atlanta,
Georgia. "I should be able to sit up on my own.
But as far as me walking, and all that, it's all on
me. I'm going to be walking, I know that. That's
how I feel."
The fighter, best known for victories over
Antonio Margarito and several other main stage
fighters, is reported to be in good spirits despite
the devastating injury and, according to his
manager, has even talked about one day getting
back in the gym.
Williams was scheduled to face Saul Alvarez on
September 15th for Alvarez's WBC junior
middleweight title.
Those who have followed the career of Williams
and have seen him fight know that the lanky
southpaw with the gentlemanly demeanor and
warrior's heart is not one to be taken lightly. The
fighter, once known as "Boxing's Most Feared
Fighter," has been up against the odds before
and has always battled back with bravery and
class.
Of course, this fight is much greater than the
one he had with Antonio Margarito or his battle
in the first bout with Sergio Martinez.
Williams, though, is classy even after suffering
through an accident that many would've used as
justification for being bitter and angry.
"If I can't walk, then, oh well. 'Hakuna
Matata,' [No Worries]. I'll be on a boat fishing,"
Williams said.
All in all, Williams leaves the sport with a record
of 41-2 with 27 KOs and a reputation as a true
"throwback" fighter. He is a two-time former
WBO welterweight champion and interim WBO
junior middleweight titlist. Over the course of a
twelve-year professional career, "The Punisher"
earned a reputation as a fighter most top stars
opted to avoid. Despite competing in the same
weight class as stars such as Manny Pacquiao,
Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, and Shane
Mosley, Williams was only able to land bouts
with other fighters who were also avoided by the
sport's elite.
"The Punisher" Paul Williams is a true champ
and whether he regains his ability to walk or not,
there's no doubt that he will continue to display
the class and courage his fans have come to
expect.
