Embarassed about the Blades? Shit, I'm not even a hockey fan. It really doesn't matter to me whether they go thru with the new arena or not. I won't be in KC, at least not for 2 years.

actually the vote for this is TUESDAY AUGUST 3rd......not the november elections. Bush aint on the bill. There is no reason not to go out and vote though.

Unfortunately I cannot vote, because I'm still registered as a Liberty, Clay County voter...not Kansas City, Clay County where I live now. #1 will only be on the Kansas City Ballots. But I sorely want this to pass. The only people who shouldn't want it to pass is the people from St Louis, and last I checked they can't vote on it either. Only we can!!! (we not so much me, but you get the idea)

sux mayne...

Downtown arena winning at polls

By LYNN HORSLEY

The Kansas City Star

Supporters of a downtown arena were celebrating their apparent victory Tuesday night as voters appeared to be approving fee increases for what has been dubbed the Sprint Center.

The election culminated one of the most bitterly contested issue campaigns in recent memory.

In early returns, voters were favoring a proposal to increase hotel fees by up to $1.50 per day and rental-car fees by up to $4 per day to help pay for a $225 million to $250 million arena. The facility, dubbed the Sprint Center, is expected to be built at 14th Street and Grand Boulevard. It is expected to open in 2007, shortly before Mayor Kay Barnes leaves office.

Returns in Clay County, for example, showed the arena up 54 to 46 percent, with 93 percent of the precincts reporting.

Arena supporters, including Barnes, celebrated as early vote totals came in.

“This is a huge victory for Kansas City,” Barnes said.

Barnes made the arena her administration's top priority and campaigned for it with more gusto than she has shown for any other initiative since she took office. It took on the appearance of a personal crusade, especially after St. Louis-based Enterprise Rent-A-Car mounted a costly and aggressive campaign to try to defeat it.

“With all due respect, Mayor, you da man,” said Timothy Leiweke, president and CEO of Los Angeles-based Anschutz Entertainment Group, which plans to invest $50 million in the arena.

As he spoke, Barnes gave the thumbs-up sign to cheering supporters gathered at Union Station.
