I don't like when people loop music or percussion either. Sometimes drum loops are ok but generally speaking I'm just not into sampling other peoples stuff since I'm a real musician and can play it all myself.

What kind of instruments do you play? I think that's the only real reasons why people sample is because they either don't have the skills to play what their sampling or just don't play the instrument their sampling. There's a hell of a lot of instruments out there and I doubt there's a musician out there that can play them all with great skill. I only fuck with the keyboard, wish I could play the guitar or bass. I've tried them, but just don't have the patience or finger coordination, it's something I should have started when I was a little kid. The things I do like about sampling is that it can bring you back in time if your sampling some oldschool shit and the sound is sometimes raw and gritty (vinyl dust, scratches and other dirty coloration to the sound), samples are also fun to manipulate and chop up. Of course you could always do the same to your own recordings, but in some situations it just ain't the same. I mean lets say your looking for a gritty sounding bassline piece that you heard in some oldschool funk. Yeah maybe you could play that same exact melody yourself, but the dirtyness and the way it was processed back then, might be extra hard for you to replicate. I think that's what it is, some of the samples are just processed nicely and usuable already. I don't know man, I guess it's all about personal preference. I guess there's some pride as well in playing everything yourself.

With the right tools you can duplicate that grimy sound enough to fool people into thinking it's a sample. Also, playing many instruments isn't actually that hard once you've learned one well, especially stringed. You just have to pick them up and put in a little effort. The hardest part in my opinion is what you mentioned, fingering. I can't think of many instruments I haven't/can't play but I'm strongest at keys and guitar (rhythm and bass). I don't really like playing wind and horns so if I want that I almost always bring someone in who does and is better anyway.

I like sampling when it's done to get sounds, but not actual musical parts. Some of the hardest beats I've heard are sample based but completely 100% original composition.

wasn't Eve's "What U Want" by Swizz Beats one of the demos on a sound module? I remember hearing that years ago...

As far as people sampling because they "can't play the instrument", that's hogwash...I rarely sample, but it really just depends on what kind of track you're trying to make and what kind of sound you're trying to accomplish....Alot of times even if something is replayed to the "T", it won't sound as good as a sampled segment

It's just as true that plenty of people sample because they can't play any instruments as people who can but choose to sample from time to time for whatever reason. Everyone has preferences of what they like to make (if they do beats) or what they like to hear as fans. Some people love crate diving looking for loops (I used to be one of them) but if you find me doing that these days it's to look for unique sounds to make something new out of.

At the end of the day there's room for it all. Even all the wack stuff.

I'm not so much talking about looping as I am digging for samples and choppin em....That's a whole other skill set in itself.

Taking an 8 bar loop and throwing a drum track over it doesn't take much talent. But doin shit like Premier for example is a craft for sure

J Steez using a guitar loop. Everyone does it. Does it take a lot of talent? No! But if a loop is good it's good. When I first heard that Usher song. I spent a couple of hours trying to get my arpeggio to sound like the one in the song. It just sounded good. At that time. I had no clue it was a loop.

In J Steez's video, he doesn't do anything really special. I think the sound quality of the loop is what makes it sound halfway decent. I don't know about stepping hats though. I prefer realtime on those.
