1.Steroids were never legal. They might not have tested for them back in the day, but they were never legal in any sport.

2. People bought into Merriman's explanation about how it was an over-the-counter substance that happened to test positive for steroids.

its not hypocricy...

McGuire....denied it. He became the 21st century ROSE...cause everyone knew Rose did it but he always denied it. He fucked up.

So it serves him right.

Merriman admitted what he did, dealt with it, and moved on.

stocktone: why is this bugging you so much? First off you are dealing with two different sports. Steriods were legal? when? not only are they not allowed in sports, they are illegal period...thats in the real world buddy. Did Mark Mcuire REALLY have hall of fame numbers? i know he hit a bunch of homeruns, but im not too familiar with his overall stats....I have an issue with Mcguire leaving the game when he did. I think he knew people were on to him and he couldnt perform with drug enhancment.....i think rather than get exposed, he walked away. Thats chicken shit.

If you want to debate on the whole Shawne Merriman issue, we can do that in another thread, but the two stories are not comparable

Stop saying Steroids are illegal, then speaking like you're actually saying something. Steroids are NOT illegal in all cases any more than Alcohol is illegal in all cases. Be CLEAR with what you're saying.

And yes, its a double standard. Accusing someone of something, then tarnishing their legacy because they won't "admit" to your accusation is pure bullshit.

Merriman NEVER admitted to taking steroids. He said that a supplement he was taking was the reason his test showed up positive.

To me...that excuse is as lame as Bonds saying that he didn't know what he was taking. It's the same thing.

I don't care one way or another...but there definitely IS a double standard going on.

There is one huge difference between McGwire and Rose. With Rose's situation there were official documents proving he bet on baseball and he still denied it, at the time. With McGwire's situation he has never actually been caught doing anything. Everyone is basing his guilt on what Jose Canseco said in his book, and the quote he made in front of Congress. When he said "Let's not talk about the past..blah blah." I think both of them should be in the HOF, but their situations are completly different. And with Merriman he pulled a Pete Rose and denied it. Merriman said it was a false positive from some supplement from GNC. I'm not sure if Merriman came clean after he said that, but I do remember that part for sure.

Mark Mcguire pleaded the fifth, not necessarily denying that he took them, Andro was legal at the time, and yes there was testing, but for other things. I'm over it, ESPN and Fox News are lame.

Media loves to discredit a star, how many tests has Barry failed (answer is 0) and yet he's guilty.

Exactly. And does admitting what you've done make it any more acceptable ? Seems to me that it is, in this case.
