I highly recommend Mushihimesama Futari It's by the same company that made Deathsmiles. It features several modes of play including a novice mode that makes things manageable if you find the other modes a bit too challenging.

You can order it from the link above or find it on ebay. It has a platinum release so it shouldn't cost you too much. It's a japanese game but all the menu's and options are in english and it's region free so it will work on an american console no problem.

There are several other Japan only shmups that are region free: (work on a US console)

Bullet Soul
Eschatos
Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets
Espgaluda II

As for other domestic releases:

Deathsmiles XII (games on demand)
Otomedius Excellent (comes out in July)

XBLA:

Ikaruga
Guwange (not my cup of tea)
Strania

There is others but I can't recommend them.

There is another game that you can probably pick up for 2.99 at your local gamestop called Wartech. It's a unique hybrid between fighting games and shooting games. You're a ship and in an arena against another player. Instead of super moves you get what is called BOSS mode where your ship temporary transforms into a huge boss like you would find in a shooting game. It's a lot of fun but know that if you don't have someone else willing to play the game with you it's rather boring.

Raiden IV looks cool but I didn't enjoy it. I find that it moves a bit too slow and that your ship is constantly underpowered.

Futari in action. You can find some crazy vids on youtube that are like "hardest last boss ever" ...but that is only in Ultra & God modes. Most sane people don't play those.
wtf is dat game mayne??? shit looks siccccc...like some old r-type / aero blasters type shit mayne...

lol the whole towards the end statement is wrong, the game is difficult once you get to like the 2nd level.

I'm playing on the unpatched version, since then there has been a patch and the american version is suppose to be rebalanced to be even easier, so I wouldn't worry too much.

It's not hard in the unfair advantage or simply impossible kind of way. It's hard because you have to think on your toes and trust your instincts. 1 little slip up and you die, I do mean 1 slip up too.

It's a good game too, awesome atmosphere, lots of hidden extra things. (you can play an arcade in the game, unlock songs to play in a jukebox at the pub you frequent, all kinds of stuff)

since the puzzles arent randomized at all, how do they hold-up over time? is the replay value high? i imagine you unlock each stage after completing it, but i heard there were only like 30..

they hold up pretty well. the thing is you'll die like 10+ times on a stage and you'll have to do it over and over again until you get it right so you'll memorize that section long enough to get through it but some of the tricky actual puzzle parts you'll be like "okay what the fuck did I do here" the next time you play it.
