Raiders strike a deal with Kelechi Osemele
Posted by Josh Alper on March 8, 2016, 11:09 AM EST

Tuesday started with word that the Raiders were one of the leaders to land offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele as a free agent when deals can be consummated on Wednesday and the two sides have only moved closer since then.

PFT has confirmed that the Raiders and Osemele have agreed to a deal in principle that will have Osemele moving from Baltimore to Oakland for the 2016 season if it goes through as planned. Financial details aren’t available, but it’s likely to be a lucrative deal given the Raiders’ cap space and Osemele’s standing in this year’s free agent class.

Osemele is No. 24 on PFT‘s list of the top free agents that can hit the open market at the start of the new league year on Wednesday afternoon, although several of the players ahead of him have been locked up with franchise and transition tags. He’s also one of the top offensive linemen available for a Raiders team that needed a boost in that area.

Osemele has been a guard for most of his career, but did close out the 2015 season at left tackle. If Donald Penn re-signs with the Raiders, Osemele will almost certainly play inside but could find himself on Derek Carr’s blind side in the event Penn moves on.

Donald Penn: My plan is to remain with Raiders
Posted by Josh Alper on March 8, 2016, 3:54 PM EST

The Raiders have a deal in place with Kelechi Osemele to join the team when the league year gets underway on Wednesday.

Osemele has primarily played guard, but the reported five-year, $60 million deal he agreed to wouldn’t look out of place on a left tackle. That could be a possibility in Oakland should Donald Penn leave as a free agent.

Penn said Tuesday that wasn’t his plan, however.

“I’ve been open with my plan. My plan is to be a Raider,” Penn said on NFL Network, via the Oakland Tribune. “We’re trying to figure out of the feeling is mutual. They tell me it is. They made a great signing, that’s a great pickup for Derek Carr and everybody. We’re going to see what’s going to happen. Only time is going to tell. The good thing is I’m showing interest from other teams.”

Plans can always change, especially at a time of the year when other teams can bid for your services, but getting Penn back to go with Osemele, center Rodney Hudson and guard Gabe Jackson would be a pretty good start to the offseason in Oakland.

Reports: Oakland Raiders to sign Seahawks LB Bruce Irvin
Jeremy Warnemuende - 15 minutes ago

The Oakland Raiders continue to make a huge splash before free agency even officially begins.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Raiders are set to sign former Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin when the signing period opens Wednesday.

Irvin, 28, recorded 5.5 sacks last season and has 22 in his first four seasons in the league. The move, which Rapoport said came out of nowhere, gives Oakland another pass rusher to pair with Khalil Mack as the Raiders look to build a dominant defense in the model of teams like Seattle, Denver and Carolina.

While the signing wasn't necessarily expected, it shouldn't be that much of a surprise. Oakland has money to spend and a defense coordinator who is plenty familiar with Irvin's skillset. Before joining head coach Jack Del Rio's staff a year ago, Ken Norton Jr. had been the Seahawks linebackers coach since 2010. Two years later, Seattle drafted Irvin 15th overall.

Irvin put together an impressive rookie campaign, recording a career-high eight sacks without making a start. He followed it up with just two sacks in 12 starts in 2013 and then went back up to 6.5 sacks in 15 games in 2014. Last season, Irvin played another 15 games and totaled 5.5 sacks to go with 38 tackles and a forced fumble.

Irvin is a one-trick pony. He is a speed rusher, but once he cant get around...he has a tough time shedding off blocks. He bulked up over last year and came in as more of a traditional LB role which puts his pass rushing ability as a second tier, which worked better for him IMHO. Quite frankly, drafted too high for what his abilities show, but is a solid LB.

Cap space is an advantage when you're finally good enough for free agents to want to join your team. Raiders had to overpay for like 15 years for mediocre and overrated free agents. Niners are in that boat now

Weddle shares the same agent as Sean smith. Hopefully he signs also. The defense is shaping up nice! Hope Mario Edwards Jr comes back strong, but this D is looking good!

came across this, im guessing hes pretty good

Sean Smith has allowed a catch rate under 60% in all 7 seasons. No other active CB with 7+ years has done that every year of their career.
