Bird blasts refs for giving Jordan special treatment
the associated press INDIANAPOLIS - Scottie Pippen can bump and brush Mark Jackson all night long. Ron Harper can practically wrap himself around Reggie Miller. Toni Kukoc can run people over on the way to the basket.
But let one of the Indiana Pacers come within an inch of Jordan or any other Chicago Bull and TWEET! There goes the whistle.
At least that's the way Indiana coach Larry Bird sees it.
"I'd like to see Scottie Pippen guard Michael Jordan full-court like Scottie guards Mark Jackson and see how long he stays in the game," Bird said. "I tell my guys, 'You're not going to get the calls in this series. You've just got to try to play throu gh it,' which they have been."
"We know they're going to get all the reputation calls, the benefit-of-the-doubt calls," Miller said. "They're the champs. You can't decision the champs. You have to knock out the champs.
"We're the ones taking all the punches. We haven't thrown any yet," he added. "That's why they're getting all the calls. We haven't gotten aggressive yet."
The Bulls hear all this and just laugh. Yeah, they've really brutalized the Pacers.
It was Kukoc and Dennis Rodman who got tossed from Game 1 with fouls. It's Rodman and Randy Brown who've gotten technicals.
And it was the guy with tattoos and funky hair who picked up his second and third fouls in a 23-second span Tuesday, leaving the seven-time rebounding champ to cool his heels on the bench for the rest of the first half.
Chicago did go to the line more than the Pacers (39 times to 32), but the disparity wasn't as bad as Game 1 (37 to 25). And the Pacers picked up only three more fouls (30) than the Bulls.
