Just wondering what you all would think about this. The idea would be, everyone would send in all the footage they could get their hands on. Then it would all be edited together into a bi-weekly(?)/monthly show. The main place to view the show would be an internet download, but a higher-quality DVD copy would also be available for sale (DVD-R, for a few dollars nothing more.)

Would you support something like this?
Would you be able to find and submit footage?
Would you pay for DVD copies of the show?
Would you be willing to sell other people DVD copies?

Artists/Labels--Would you be interested in buying ad time?
Would you allow cameramen free/cheap entry into your shows so they can film and upload footage?

Engineers--Would you be willing to help out with some of the audio mixing?

Anyone who I've pissed off--Would you be willing to not kick my ass so I can go get additional footage in the Seattle-Tacoma area?

Beyond that.....What would you like to see? Interviews? Live performances? Studio sessions? Let it be known.

I know the Hip-Hop 101 thing is going on right now, but as we all know, 1) its mainly Backpackers, 2) its mainly Seattle, and 3) they aren't allowed to sell ad space because its public TV.

As far as costs go, the main things would be Shipping, Blank DVD-R's, Website stuff, and depending on who is willing to help out, not much more. This is something that is relatively cost-free but has a good potential to make some money.

Once I touch down back home I'm going to pick up some new Audio-Video stuff and get to work. I'll be working on audio engineering and video production. It'd be cool if I could be working towards somethin and not just fuckin around. I'd have about 10-20 hours a week to devote to the project, depending on resources (i.e., how many video tapes get sent in).

Lemme know. Is this a
or
idea?

I was thinking, something like those cheezy "Source TV" shows they used to air late at night on NBC. But yeah, more or less like a video mixtape: a Host, a bunch of video clips, interviews, performances...typical shit.

Music Videos are cool, but can be time/money-consuming. If the artists do them on their own tho that's cool.

your talking public access television? even so, sounds like a decent idea. I'd try and make it a lil better quality than most public access shows, if possible. I don't think it costs much if anything to get a show on public tv, and it seems that they give em to almost anybody. keep us informed if you get any good info on this.

Real talk. I've been looking around trying to learn what I can, but this shit is hard. The main thing I'm looking to do is just be able to handle everyone else's stuff: MiniDV, D8/Hi8/8mm, VHS, VHS-C, etc. Future-wise, I would love to buy a 3CDD/HDV, create my own stuff instead of just working with what's available. Ideal would be something with 720p. But don't get me wrong though, I barely know WTF i'm talking about

Editing and Engineering....I haven't the foggiest. I'm more mixtape-minded than album-minded, if that makes any sense. I'm not looking to create a $20/unit finished product, just something you can slap in the DVD player and enjoy. So probably just your basic $100-200 suite. I'd love to work with iMovie but i don't think i can afford it.

My real goal here is to be able to show up with a full set-up to a concert, tape several hours (on stage, back stage, afterparty, warm-ups, etc), and have a bootleg out within a month or so. Music Videos, Commercials, other Advanced stuff....I'll leave that to the pro's.

Editing is easy. The engineer job in the tv studio is easy too....you just gotta know how to operate the equipment (if you have it-but it's fucking expensive). If you want it to look really good then you're (or whoever) gonna be spending upwards of 2 grand on each camera you buy, plus the other shit you have to get with it.

well depending on the computer ur editing on i-movie will be free it coms with apples, however if you are editing with a pc u can probally use oine of their entry level programs such as movie magic or whatever and u can buy the i-life suite which has i-movie,i-dvd and anumber of other programs for like fifty bucks. If you are just planning on going for a grimey "mixtape feel" i-movie will work out fine for u and you will be able to edit everything from audio to clips in it, as far as the tv show plan on droppin at least a couple thousand for a entry level mixing board and decks. You can buy analog to digital bridges for 150-200 some of which come with editing software but i wwouldn't reccomend using their software cuz it looks like shit.

The HDR-FX1 is that bad ass shit, but the price would kill me.

I just know that as DVD, HDTV and Broadband all rise, the video market is about to BOOM. The people are going to be demanding the stuff, and if the NW wants to compete, we're going to have to seize this opportunity and get the ball rolling before its too late.

Anything I can do to help out......even if it it just uploading a 3 minute flip of Rapper X in the studio freestyling, or an MC Such-and-Such sit-down interview. The big stuff can come later.

Cats should also try to jump on the shows we already have like Coolout TV, Hiphop 101, and Music Inner City.
Gordon Curvey at Music Inner City is on Comcast On Demand so it can be played at any time. He lost his house this month in a house fire and is currently getting things back in order so he needs videos. Here is the text I got from him "Hey everyone. Gordon Curvey here of Music Inner City in Seattle. Yesterday I had a house fire and everything I had was lost. I lost everything. Video equipment, everything. I have to start all over again or jump off a bridge and give up. But as Rev Jackson says I have to "Keep Hope Alive". Some of you do not like to me to well, but any support you can give me would be great. Chris Bennett the owner of KRIZ Radio and The Medium Newspaper bought me a new computer, new dvd player, microphone, mini-dv camera and Ulead Video Editing software for editing my show. Right now I do not have a place to set it up. I am currently at my mom's but I need to have my own place. Which hopefully I will have soon. To all my video reps, please send me all your current videos and any other past videos you can via dvd or mini dv or vhs. Please send them to my current address. I am going to tell the post office to hold my mail and I will go and pick it up everyday until I get a permenent residence. Please send my videos throught the mail instead of Fed Ex or UPS or DHL for now. I need to restock all the videos I can because I lost all my videos and interviews. Now I know how the Katrina and Rina victims feel to not have nothing. Again any support you can give me it will pick me up becuse I am pretty down right now. But with God's blessings I will make it though. Thanks."

That is an idea, but these people don't seem to be doing anything to try and bring their shows to DVD-R or an Internet download. The most I have seen is an internet link to watch the show live, or the Comcast one on On Demand.

As far as the shows go, the Music Inner City episode or two that I've seen....really, I'm not very interested in watching Mya and Fat Joe videos during the show. Or I believe in the one show I saw they were at the red carpet in L.A. doing something, talking to celebrities. I just can't see it.

The episode of Hip-Hop 101 I saw (had J.U.I., a beat battle and some other things) looked cool, but not the kind of show I'm talking about. I'm talking more of a KIRO 7 news type show, where the main focus is prepared video clips and presentations, rather than live talking and performances.

Coolout, Mic TV and Level 1--I have not heard of these yet. Do they have any websites or other place where I can read up about them?

I'm down to work with just about anyone, but my loyalties lie in the NW Rap Scene. Not celebrities, not clothing or club pics, not 50 Cent music videos or Fat Joe interviews, none of this stuff. NW Rap. I'm very one-dimensional and limited, but that's just the way it is.

(If you can for me, tell that man Gordon to keep his head up. I'll see if i can squeeze out a small piece of equipment or software for him, so that he can continue doing his work.)

well considering that the material is limited I think you are going to have a hard time doing any of this on a consistant basis. you would be better off doing something like a dvd going around and hooking up with producers and rappers and interviewing them and watching them get down in the studio. I think that would be a good idea. You could get by on a smaller budget and I think it would be alot more interesting not to mention at one point you could incorporate mixtapes and shit along with the DVD's. If you are counting on peoples material that is sent in then you are also at the mercy of their quality.

DVD was actually the original idea, but anything I do with media, I'm all about the real deal and not _-Rs. So even with a modest $5000 budget, after selling 1000 copies you'd barely break even. 2000 is cool, but seems like quite a bit. $10 would yield more and is a good price-tag for the future and with a more polished product, but i wouldn't be comfortable charging that right away.

By "TV Show", I mainly mean a multimedia site that's overflowing with stuff. You'd have access to download all the latest local shows, exclusives (studio sessions, interviews, back-stage, etc.), and other things. The TV idea would enter if you just wanted to click a button, and sit back and enjoy without having to pick and choose. Something like a "Best of" of whats new and available.

Ill be at you in a little bit....

If it was a good outlet for people to be promoted properly then I don't think he would have trouble getting material and footage from artists. It's being takin seriously that's the hard part, there might be a period where there is little particiapation but if you can take what you do get and make the best out of it, then I think they might be more prone to send you material. I think you might wanna start with public access tv, then progress from there. They supply alot of what you need, and it might be low budget but you gotta start somewhere. Plus the start up is not gonna kill your pockets.

I'd love to go out in the field, but I'm limited in what I can do. I'll be living in Bellingham, which is the very NORTHWEST of the NorthWest. So it would be almost impossible for me to go out to Spokane or Boise or even Portland, except on the rarest of occasions. I'd end up having to sleep in my car or pay for hotel rooms, and if I'm staying at the Motel 8, it won't be me paying for it in the end.....

Bellingham-Vancouver; Everett-Seattle-Federal Way; Tacoma-Olympia...these are districts I could cover fairly well, on both video production and websites. I'll eat the gas prices for these. -- Portland-Vancouver, Eugene, Spokane, Yakima, Boise, Tri-Cities, Medford, Pocatello...very hard to reach.

Participation is definitely going to be a bitch. Asking people to send in stuff is already enough, but when I'm out of town....I'm going to have to make it a policy that if i meet with anybody--ANYBODY!--the least i need to get is a fricking 8 bar freestyle, or a 3 question interview, or SOMETHING that can be put to use. From there, I don't really know.

If you could pull this off, I think it could have tremendous potential. With the price of DVDs falling it makes something like this more reasonable, but I think that other complications such as lack of footage could prove to be problematic. I envision this becoming something of a northwest video mixtape where new songs could be laced over and between video footage of recent concerts, interviews, and kickin it footage. Eventually if you hustled hard enough, you would need to turn down footage rather than seek it out. I would buy something like this if the price was right...
