Training camp begins July 24; Ten practices open to the public

http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/49ers/archives/012404.html

The start of training camp is tied to a team's first preseason game. So with the news that the 49ers' preseason opener in Oakland will be on Aug. 8 came the announcement that training camp kicks off Thursday, July 24. If you'll remember, last year training camp didn't begin until July 29 and that Mike Nolan wasn't thrilled about the late start. This year's schedule should make him happier. As has been the case the last few years, 10 training-camp practices will be open to the public. Those dates have not yet been announced.

Here's the full preseason sked:

Friday, August 8
@ Oakland
7:00 p.m.

Saturday, August 16
vs. Green Bay
6:00 p.m.

Thursday, August 21
@ Chicago
6:00 p.m.

Friday, August 29
vs. San Diego
7:00 p.m.

******
The good folks at 49erswebzone have invited me to take part in an on-line chat this evening at 6:30 p.m. So now's the time to ask about Takeo Spikes' chances of landing in SF, which stadiums serve the best food and what Maiocco does in the press trailer when he's not filming himself with his video phone.

*****
Also, the team announced it had cut LB Lance Brandenburgh of Nebraska. Brandenburgh was one of the undrafted free agents the team signed in the days after the draft. Perhaps his most memorable moment of minicamp -- blanketing fullback Moran Norris so closely in a pass-coverage drill that Norris tried to start a fight with him.

*****
And finally .... I hope you're sitting down for this, but Barrows is leaving -- for a week. I'm taking my laptop with me but am instituting an in-case-of-emergency-break-glass policy. That is, I won't crack it open unless Spikes signs, the 49ers move to L.A. or they decide to resurrect that ugly "49" logo on their helmet.

Exhibition opener has bay angle

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/05/08/SPD210IF8K.DTL

(05-07) 19:25 PDT -- Two weeks of banging against each other should be more than enough for the 49ers by the time they get around to their first exhibition game against the Raiders on Aug. 8 at the Coliseum. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

The 49ers open training camp in Santa Clara on July 24, a week earlier than a year ago.

For their exhibition against the Raiders, the 49ers will see quarterback JaMarcus Russell at the beginning of his first full season as Oakland's starter. Next for the 49ers is the Brett Favre-less Green Bay Packers at Candlestick Park for a 6 p.m. game Aug. 16.

That is, unless Favre decides to un-retire and further put on hold Aaron Rodgers' debut as Green Bay's starter.

The 49ers' third game, usually considered the most meaningful preseason game, comes Aug. 21 in Chicago in a 5 p.m. PDT encounter with the Bears, who haven't had a capable quarterback since Jim McMahon.

In that game, the 49ers will face the man who cost them a fifth-round draft pick in last month's draft. The NFL docked San Francisco a draft choice for tampering with Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs in 2007. The 49ers maintain their calls to Briggs' agent actually were regarding another of his clients.

In their afterthought of a final exhibition game Aug. 29, the 49ers will play the San Diego Chargers at 7 p.m. at Candlestick.

Note: The 49ers announced Wednesday that they had waived linebacker Lance Brandenburgh, a free agent from Nebraska who was signed last week.

Top Five with G Jeb Terry

http://www.49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=4211&section=PR News

Jeb Terry was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2004 draft out of North Carolina. He was a backup offensive lineman and special teams player for the Buccaneers for three seasons, seeing action in 30 games with one start at right guard in 2006. He went to training camp with Tampa Bay last season but was waived prior to the start of the regular season. Get to know more about Terry in this Top Five.

Q: What was your time like in Tampa, and how tough was it to spend most of last season out of football?
A: The Bucs were great. I really enjoyed the organization and had a great time there, started a life there. It was a great learning experience. After I got hurt, it was one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever had to deal with. Trying to get back on the field all year, and rehabbing was very trying on me and my wife so we’re excited to be back on a team and ready to go out there and play.

Q: What was your injury exactly?
A: It was a high ankle sprain which normally isn’t that big of a deal but mine took quite a long time. I took an injury settlement and the ankle took longer than we thought and I couldn’t get back on the field. I just had to rehab every day and try to get healthy.

Q: What have you been working on since joining the 49ers?
A: The first thing I needed to do was learn the offense, so I’ve been in the books a lot trying to get that all taken care of. We’ve worked on a lot of footwork out there too with our coaches. All coaches have different types of technique they like to teach so I’ve been trying to get on the same page as Coach Warhop and just move from there, and do all he asks of me and at the best of my ability.

Q: What do you think of the group of running backs you get to block for around here?
A: The backs here look great. I was fortunate to have Cadillac Williams in Tampa and unfortunately he went down last year, but Ernest Graham stepped in and did a great job for them. But, you block for whoever is behind you, but it’s exciting to have explosive people and I’ve been fortunate to have good backs my whole career so far, and I’m lucky that gets to continue here.

Q: I read in your Bucs bio that you attended a military academy and that it was there that you became fluent in Spanish, and that you regularly visit Mexico. How well can you speak it?
A: I am out of practice but every time I go to Mexico I get back in the flow of it. More than half of my unit was from Mexico or South America and so in the dorms I learned to speak to them in Spanish. I’m very good at street Spanish. I took Spanish classes but I’d go to visit them and I’d start talking with their parents and accidentally throw in some inappropriate words. They were understanding and appreciated the effort. My wife and I try to take some trips there and then my dad and I also go on hunting trips to Mexico, so I end up going about two or three times a year. I really have an affinity for the country, the people are great and very welcoming. I stand out like a sore thumb there, that's for sure, but once I speak Spanish they're happy.

49ers Insider: LB Lawson says defense has hit big time

http://www.sacbee.com/sf49ers/story/927709.html

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers' training staff limited Manny Lawson to the sideline during the team's minicamp last week. But the outside linebacker couldn't help peeking at new teammates while he rehabilitated his injured knee.

"The whole time," Lawson said, "I was looking at everyone from the wide receivers to the defensive line. All the information we were dumping on the new guys – the way they took it in speaks really highly on them."

What caught his eye more than anything were perhaps the team's two biggest offseason additions, Justin Smith and rookie Kentwan Balmer. Both defensive linemen could be playing in front of Lawson this season, Smith on the right side, Balmer on the left.

The 49ers did not add an edge pass rusher this offseason, as many observers predicted. Instead, the hope is that with players such as Smith and Balmer tying up blockers at the line of scrimmage, linebackers such as Lawson, Tully Banta-Cain and Parys Haralson will have an easier time getting to the quarterback.

"A guy who can take up two blockers so the linebacker can get around – that's going to be huge for our defense," Lawson said. "And it's also creating depth. Now, if one guy gets tired, we'll have a nice rotation."

Lawson said his knee feels fine, but 49ers trainers don't want him to rush back to the practice field. He said he hoped to work with his teammates when organized activities begin June 2.

Good-hands team

Cautioning that his team has yet to practice in pads, Mike Nolan said his wide receivers are the most impressive bunch he has had since becoming the 49ers' coach.

"In shorts and running around in spring, this looks like the best of groups that we've had in the past," Nolan said following the team's recent minicamp. "I would expect this group to perform better than the others, but that also stems from what our line and quarterback are doing."

During the minicamp, the starting wide receivers were Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson, free agents the 49ers acquired in March. Nolan has had a different No. 1 wide receiver in each of his four seasons in San Francisco. In 2005, it was Brandon Lloyd. A year later, it was Antonio Bryant. And last season, Darrell Jackson filled that role. Jackson was cut in March and is with the Denver Broncos.

Training day

The 49ers announced their training camp would begin July 24. As in recent years, 10 training camp practices will be open to the public, although the team has yet to release those dates.

The start of training camp is tied to the team's first exhibition game, which, it was announced this week, will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 in Oakland.
