The team on Tuesday agreed to terms with NaVorro Bowman on a five-year extension through the 2018 season. NFL Network's Albert Breer reported Bowman will earn $45.25 million with $25.5 million guaranteed over the life of the contract.

Man it's amazing how fast this organization has turned around with Harbaugh and Baalke running the show. A lot of 49er fans critized Jed when he chose to keep Baalke as the gm, but he has done nothing but make HUGE acquisitions via free agency and draft, and extend our key players. Pat and Bow are like brothers and it's good to hear they will be terrorizing the league for years to come together as the best damn linebacking duo in the league. Shit our entire group of Aldon, Willis, Bowman and Brooks are the best linebackers in the league and all signed for the long run.

Losing Hunter is a huge blow to our team. I was hoping the Niners would give him more touches this season after the great play he showed last season and that's exactly what they did. Him and Gore have proved to be the best running back duo in the league and now we lose him. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!! Our team got a lot slower without Hunter and Williams.

Damn I have a feeling Alex Smith will start after watching Delanie Walker on the NFL Network. Just waiting to see what Kaep can do has made Sundays even more exciting and hope he's out there this Sunday.

Habaugh, Baalke, and Jed deserve all the credit but I've been hearing Paraag Marathe's name thrown around a lot when contracts are signed. Rumor is he's the mastermind behind taking care of the 49ers salary cap, making sure they are always in a good position now and in the future.

Point is that is a 4 headed monster at the Front Office, with a staff like that you can guarantee the 49ers will continue to be a factor for a very long time!

Jed York = Cuts the checks

Paraag Marathe = Makes sure those checks that are getting cut are "49er friendly"

Baalke/Harbaugh = Evaluate and coach the talent

In Harbaugh we trust but the big question that we need to look at is whether Kaep can lead us to a Superbowl victory. I know he's the future and the way he's been playing, also the present, BUT is he going to nut up come playoffs? Kaep has much more talent than Alex and it has shown, but Alex has that playoff experience. Alex did choke on 3rd downs all last season and in the NFC championship, but he showed great poise against the saints. This is some risky business but I hope it pays off THIS season. We are ready for a championship NOW

The bottom line is this... We have a ton of freaks on defense that will need a paycheck and new deal coming up... Alex Smith is Owed 8 million cash if he makes the roster for next seasons team. I believe they want that money to go to locking up players not to an average game manager. They figure while everything is settling and we have St Louis and Miami back to back games we give Kaep a few starts and see if he holds his mud. If he does we have our guy for the near future and can lock up a few more key pieces moving forward... Giving Alex 8 million to be a manager isnt something our brain trust wanted to do. Its all in the big picture... Baring injuries our team should be solid for years to come!

but people forgot how good the defense is and why he had 13 games on his back ...

I wouldn't care if he leaves to play with another team, good riddance IMO..

Tolzien is a great backup QB though ... between him and Kaep, they both have accurate arms and they can throw bullets...

Hopefully he stays and be Kaep's backup QB ..

Approximately 98.7 percent of the inmates at California’s state prison have tattoos. I don’t know that as fact, but I’ve watched enough “Lockup” to know it’s close to accurate.

I’m also pretty sure less than 1.3 percent of NFL quarterbacks have tattoos. There’s a reason for that.

NFL quarterback is the ultimate position of influence and responsibility. He is the CEO of a high-profile organization, and you don’t want your CEO to look like he just got paroled.

For dinosaurs like me, NFL quarterbacks were our little Dutch boys. The original hero stuck his finger in the dyke to save Holland. Pro QBs were the last line of defense against the raging sea of ink. When our kids said they wanted a tattoo, we could always point to the Manning brothers.

My guess is Archie would have made Peyton throw an extra 1,000 passes before dinner if he’d come home with a tattoo. The old man knew QBs are different.

Did Sammy Baugh, Johnny Unitas, Doug Williams or Joe Montana have arms covered in ink? Do Tom Brady, Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers? The world will end when Tim Tebow shows up a tattoo parlor.

Three 49ers vets provide assistance to sign Bowman

The 49ers put together another team effort this week to sign All-Pro inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman to a contract extension through the 2018 season.
Tight end Vernon Davis, cornerback Carlos Rogers and defensive lineman Ray McDonald restructured their contracts to provide the 49ers with the necessary cap room to award Bowman with a $7.5 million signing bonus, a league source told CSNBayArea.com on Friday.

Bowman, whose original four-year deal averaged $623,062 annually through 2013, signed a five-year extension this week through 2018 that averages $8.911 million annually.

Because of his signing bonus, Bowman's 2012 cap figure immediately rose from $717,887 to $2.217 million, the source said.

In order to fit Bowman's new deal under their salary cap, the 49ers turned to three veterans to clear nearly $2.5 million in cap space.

Davis provided the biggest cap relief for the 49ers of approximately $1.2 million. Davis' 2012 cap figure went from a little over $8 million to $6.8 million. The 49ers awarded Davis a $1.48 million signing bonus and had his remaining $25,000 per game active roster bonuses for the final five regular season games designated as an OATSB item (other amount treated as signing bonus).

Rogers' salary figure went from $5.5 million to $4.7 million, as he also had his per-game roster bonuses for the final five games converted to OATSB. McDonald's cap figure went from $4.154 this season to $3.6 million, as his original 2013 base salary was partially converted to an option bonus.

The overall framework of those contracts did not change. Davis' contract still averages $7.35 million through 2015; Rogers' average salary is $7.325 million through 2015; and McDonald's deal averages $4.02 million through 2015.

The 49ers are currently $1.442 million under the league's salary cap.
