Report: Smith happy with three-year deal 49ers have offered
In an interview with CBS5 reporter Kim Coyle Sunday night, 49ers quarterback Alex Smith said he's happy with the three-year deal offered by the 49ers, that he isn't seeking a longer-term deal and that his representatives and the 49ers are working on the details of the contract. Smith also said on Saturday he was confident a deal would get done with the 49ers. The free agency period begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Here's the television version of the interview. Smith does not talk about the length of the contract in it, implying that Coyle also spoke to him off camera.
Also on Sunday The Denver Post speculated that the 49ers, along with the Titans, were two "mystery teams" interested in Peyton Manning and that the 49ers would try to land Manning if their negotiations with Smith continued to drag on. A league source, however, said that the 49ers have been unwavering in their pursuit of Smith, not Manning, and reiterated that a contract offer to Smith is "on the table."
Meanwhile, the quarterback who will be throwing to free-agent receiver Randy Moss today isn't Smith or Colin Kaepernick, who is out of town. Instead, coach Jim Harbaugh will get a good read on Moss's speed and conditioning by throwing to the receiver himself. Team president Jed York had a bit of fun with his followers last night by making a Manning allusion ....
Wrote York in a Tweet: "Former Colt Pro Bowl QB throwing for 49ers tomorrow. Just to clarify, Coach Harbaugh is turning into Capt Comeback to throw to Randy Moss."
