The arms have it: Staley says Smith's wingspan makes for tough blocking
0

General manager Trent Baalke has referred to Aldon Smith's gas-hose arms as "levers."

From a left tackle's perspective, Joe Staley terms them a nightmare.

Staley has lined up against the 6-foot-4, 258-pound rookie early in training camp and has come away impressed. Smith's 83 7/8-inch wingspan -- coupled with brute strength -- makes for some tough blocking, Staley said.

"Usually when you see defensive ends or pass rushers with the long arms, they're not too strong with it," Staley said. "They have the long arms to kind of get your hands off of them. But with Aldon, he's strong, too, so that he can really use them as an advantage. Those things are real long. He put one on me the other day and I was like fully extended and I couldn't even touch his body."

* Frank Gore is back and Josh Morgan is swooning.

The Niners wide receiver said it was "lovely" to see the two-time Pro Bowl running back in the locker room after his four-day contract holdout.

"I was really excited -- I almost hugged him and gave him a kiss," Morgan said, laughing. "But I tried to play it cool."

Staley was also excited to have Gore back, but kept his emotions a bit more in check.

"I think guys are just very excited to see him," Staley said. "He's one of the leaders on the football team and he's a Pro Bowl player. So any time you can get a guy like that back in the locker room it's going to raise spirits."

* Cornerback Shawntae Spencer, who expected to miss this afternoon's practice with a minor hamstring injury, said such tweaks are likely related to the lockout. Spencer suffered the injury during a drill in practice Sunday.

"It's a little tough to simulate as far as your offseason workouts -- to simulate a practice," Spencer said. "The movements and the demands on your body. So since we didn't have an offseason, you see a lot of different little things happening to guys. A little more tweaks and things like that. These first couple days we've had a lot."

* The talk of Jim Harbaugh bringing in a tight-end friendly offense doesn't bother Morgan, who views Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker as one the league's top tandems. "The better they are, the more open we're going to be," Moragn said. "So I love it."

* The Niners have signed cornerback Phillip Davis, an undrafted rookie free agent from Tulane. Davis (5-10, 173) was a first-team All-Conference USA selection this past season, leading the Green Wave in passes defended (12) and sharing team-high honors with three interceptions.
