Niners nail down Willis until 2016

Big news from Santa Clara today. The 49ers announced they have signed inside linebacker Patrick Willis to a five-year contract extension. Willis' original deal went through 2011. The new deal will make him a 49er until 2016. The 49ers and Willis will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. today.

"I am very proud of what Pat has been able to accomplish," Mike Singletary said in a statement. "He is the epitome of what a 49er is all about. Pat has had to overcome a lot in his life and has maintained the ability to stay focused on his goals. Before it is all said and done, he may go down as one of the best to play the position. I am thankful that our organization has realized Pat is one of the core pieces to this puzzle, and I am excited for our community, fans, coaches and players, that we will have Pat here for a very long time."

A number of key players have short-term contracts. Willis' deal was the most important. He has led the league in tackles in two of his first three seasons with the 49ers. And as Singletary said, he has become the face of the new, blue-collar and defense-oriented team. A close second to Willis in terms of importance is tight end Vernon Davis, whose contract expires following the 2010 season.

Key Niners signed through 2010:
TE Vernon Davis
S Dashon Goldson
WR Jason Hill
LB Manny Lawson
QB Alex Smith

Signed through 2011
RB Frank Gore
C Eric Heitmann
WR Josh Morgan
K Joe Nedney
G Chilo Rachal

the fuck you wasnt aimed at u, it was at them. the "repost" bitches.
Okay, cool.

MaioccoCSN--This deal is mutually beneficial because Patrick Willis had 2 yrs remaining on original deal with 49ers. Glazer reports it's 5 years, $50M, 29M Garnetted. It's more complex for 49ers to get a deal done with TE Vernon Davis. He is just 16 regular-season games away from unrestricted free agency.

Nice chunk of change...Willis deserves it, he's gonna be a beast for years.

I'm happy that a player who WANTS to be a NINER and produces like a muthafucka got the big pay day. If all sports deals were this clean cut, pro sports would be perfect. Good job Niners front office! Now go sign v davis and we are looking good!

Vernon Davis doesn't deserve a big payday yet. He needs to put together another productive year to warrant a multi-year contract.
u must have not watched the 49ers much before last year or understand how the game works. he wasnt used for much more than blocking before this last year, and even then he's one of the best blocking tight ends in the league if not THE best. he did have a few opportunities tho before last year but he still wasnt a focal point of the scheme like he is now.

as long as Vernon's work ethic and desire are proper solid, then he does deserve an extension. its better for both the team and the player to lock up guys like that before they reach free agency or before they feel insulted and want to leave or want to be overpaid to stay.

I've been watching the Niners since 1984 and yes I "understand how the game works". I know what VD's role has been on teams past. Even in a limited role he was an underachiever. 1 pro bowl season doesn't warrant a huge contract extension. he needs to produce consistently. Abrayo Franklin is going to have to produce again this season if he wants his big contract. Patrick Willis earned his new deal because he's been a beast since day 1. VD doesn't deserve big money yet IMO.
