Three 49ers signings become official
The 49ers just announced the official signings of RB DeShaun Foster, LB Dontarrious Thomas and QB J.T. O'Sullivan.
WR Isaac Bruce also agreed to terms with the 49ers over the weekend. He is expected to sign in the next day or two.

Foster's past three seasons have been amazingly consistent with 879, 897 and 876 yards rushing witht the Panthers. He's also caught 34, 32 and 25 passes those seasons.
Foster (6-foot, 222 pounds) led the Panthers with 876 yards rushing (3.5 average) last season. In 2006, he gained 897 yards (4.0 average). He's had three TDs rushing each of the past two seasons. Foster was originally the Panthers' second-round pick in the 2002 draft from UCLA. He went to high school in Tustin.
One of the knocks on Foster has been fumbles. He fumbled 11 times the past two seasons, losing seven of them.
The Panthers released Foster two weeks ago to save a reported $4.5 million in cap room. The Panthers are committed to DeAngelo Williams, a two-year vet from Memphis, Williams was the Panthers' first-round pick in '06.

Thomas is slated to play the "ted" linebacker position -- the strong inside position that Derek Smith held last season -- in the team's 3-4 defense. When the 49ers have played 4-3, one of they defensive ends plays the responsibilities of an outside linebacker. Therefore, even if the 49ers had three linebackers, two of them would still be considered inside 'backers. Therefore, Thomas would play on one side of Patrick Willis, which would be often called an outside linebacker but still with ILB responsibilities.

I've stated repeatedly that I thought the 49ers would draft a quarterback. The signing of O'Sullivan changes my thinking. It still could happen, but now I'm not necessarily expecting it. After all, O'Sullivan is a guy Mike Martz saw play in NFL Europe last spring and really, really liked. (Does that sound familiar? Kurt Warner?) O'Sullivan was the surprise No. 2 in Detroit last season behind Jon Kitna after missing all of the offseason program while he was in Europe. The 49ers currently have five QBs on their roster (Alex Smith, Shaun Hill, O'Sullivan, Drew Olson and Trent Dilfer) with one of them expected to retire shortly. They'll probably take four QBs to training camp.

Foster was on a conference call at 2 p.m. This is what he had to say:
--Said his role is to get in there and "spot" Frank Gore. Getting back to California was not a priority, but it was something he looked at.
--He said he sees the 49ers as an up-coming team that can win some games and will need to have two backs.
--On the Martz offense, Foster said, in the past he's shown he's had some explosive offenses and he said the sky is the limit in this offense.
--A lot of teams have two backs, and he felt he could help this team contribute immediately. Most teams in the league already have their No. 1 back. So there weren't many starting jobs out there for him.
--He said he expects the 49ers to be a balanced offense.
--He said he spoke to Martz, just in passing. Haven't talked scheme with him or anything like that.
--As far as his pass-catching ability, he said he can help out. He tries to be a versatile back and he's excited about using that versatility.
--He left the Panthers after six years. He said it was disappointing to get cut, but it's the nature of the game.
--He said he was a 49ers fan and a Rams fan because they were closer to where he grew up in Tustin.
--Foster was very laid back on the conference call. When pointed out that he didn't seem excited, Foster said that's just his nature. But, in fact, he is excited to join the 49ers.
