Singletary: There's trouble on the line

(09-14) 20:19 PDT -- One of the qualities the 49ers respect and appreciate about their head coach is his directness. When Mike Singletary says something, he means it. On Monday, he called out his offensive line.

"We got our tails kicked up front, it's as simple as that," Singletary said a day after his team's otherwise cheery road victory over NFC champion Arizona. "We did not play well. Our offensive line, at some point this year, will be one of the better offensive lines in the league, but in this game, they did not play well."
The din inside enclosed University of Phoenix Stadium made communication on the line difficult and was a factor in the poor showing by the offense overall. So was Arizona's game plan that called for eight and sometimes nine players in the imaginary box on the line of scrimmage, geared to stop Frank Gore. So was the Cardinals' penchant for blitzing on both running plays and passing plays.
Shaun Hill was sacked four times, with right tackle Adam Snyder appearing to be responsible for two of them. Gore averaged 1.4 yards on 22 carries and, overall, the 49ers advanced the ball via the run an average of 0.8 of a yard.
"Good teams can't do that," Singletary said.
The offensive linemen took their head coach's critique in the spirit in which it was given - it happened, learn from it, and make damn sure it doesn't happen again.
"First off, we won. We can't discount that," left guard David Baas said. "We looked at the film and we all knew what we had to. We realize Arizona brought half its team on blitzes. We have to expect that the rest of the season. We have to prepare ourselves better, execute better and not be surprised."
It's no surprise that the Cardinals ganged up on Gore with eight-man fronts. That, too, will be duplicated by San Francisco's opponents as the season progresses. Arizona revealed a template for taming Gore.
"We knew they were coming after Frank," Baas said. "We have to do a better job, and we will. There's going to be games like that. We don't want them like that. ... We're not going to hang our heads and look at the stats every night. We won the game. We have to be better."
Baas and Snyder both missed time in training camp with injuries that might have impacted their play Sunday.
"They weren't as sharp as you would like them to be," Singletary said.
Snyder, in particular, has to be better, or newcomer Tony Pashos might take his place at right tackle. Snyder had some glaring moments on half a dozen plays he'd surely like back.
Pashos, formerly with Baltimore and Jacksonville, was signed to provide depth at tackle and he might get meaningful reps in practice this week.
"We want to get a look at Pashos, see what he can do," Singletary said.
Crabtree cash shrinking?: Singletary, who is not involved in the negotiations, said it was his understanding that the 49ers sent a letter to top draft pick Michael Crabtree informing him the club is modifying its contract offer to him.
"That may be the case," the coach said.
Based on the 49ers' unconfirmed offer of $20 million over five years with $16 million guaranteed, the club is believed to be reducing its guarantee by $200,000 for each game Crabtree misses before signing his contract.
Incentives could push the value of Crabtree's contract to within a dollar of the $18 million guarantee that No. 9 pick B.J. Raji received from the Packers, according to YahooSports.com.
Per team policy, the 49ers had no comment on the latest reports regarding Crabtree.
Briefly: Cornerback Walt Harris, on injured reserve with a torn ACL, will complete his rehab at the team facility. He's in the last year of his contract and his future with the 49ers is in doubt, but Harris said he intends to play in 2010. "When it happens, your reaction is always the worst - 'Oh, man, this is it.' I initially had that mind-set," Harris said. ... Wide receiver Brandon Jones, who fractured his shoulder blade Aug. 6, said he will return to practice this week to test the progress of his rehab. He's not expected to play until later this month or early October. "They (medical personnel) told me it looks good," Jones said. "I'm wanting to play. I always want to play. I always said if you can practice, you can play."
