what do you guys think of mcnabb? vick has a 6 million dollar option. i think they are grooming vick this year for next year.

i would trade mcnabb for a conditional pick, depending on what they would want.

this way you can draft a safety, either mays or berry.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Tight end Vernon Davis has been selected as one of the San Francisco 49ers captains, coming a long way since being kicked off the field by Mike Singletary with more than 10 minutes remaining against Seattle last October for behavior the coach didn't like.

In fact, the excitable Davis has come a long way just since training camp. A regular fighter during his first three NFL seasons, he scuffled with linebacker Marques Harris during a practice early last month and everybody paid.

As in all the Niners running enough "gassers," 12 sprints across the width of the field, to make one pass out as Davis so put it.

Davis insisted it wasn't a fight, rather just an act of being competitive.

Singletary said Davis "exemplified a lot of those qualities that you have to have in order to be a leader."

Davis hopes to have a big role in new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye's offense this season.

Niners' draft pick could sit out season

Sunday, September 13, 2009 | Print Entry

At this time -- and that's an important distinction -- there is every expectation that former Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree will not sign with the San Francisco 49ers and instead will sit out this season and re-enter the draft in April, according to multiple sources. The 49ers still want Crabtree, they still think he can make an impact, it's just that no one in the organization can now envision a way in which it would happen. Each side has dug in, remained entrenched in its stance, and shown no signs of budging -- none.

Report: Niners lowering offer to Crabtree

After I posted a poll question on my blog last week, a high-ranking 49ers official expressed the following sentiment about the results: "Interesting."

It sure appears as if the 49ers are going with poll option No. 4 - "Move on without him. Lower contract offer, and try to trade rights after March 1, 2010."

Yahoo! Sports' Mike Silver, a Press Democrat alum, quotes a 49ers source as saying the club is willing to give Crabtree incentives that push the deal "up to a dollar less" than the package the Packers gave ninth overall pick B.J. Raji. The Raji deal is a five-year contract worth $22.5 million in base salary with a max of $28.5 million. Raji received $17.7 million guaranteed.

"(But) we won't go over that," the source told Silver. "Otherwise, we're going to have the same problem next year, and the year after that . . . "

The 49ers offered Crabtree $16 million guaranteed with the thought that he would play 80 games over five seasons. That works out to $200,000 for each of those games. It is likely that the 49ers are prepared to dock $200,000 in guaranteed money for each game Crabtree remains unsigned.

So it appears as if the 49ers are fine with Crabtree sitting out the season - unless he takes the dwindling offer the franchise has placed in front of him.

When asked earlier today whether the 49ers have modified their offer, coach Mike Singletary said, "At this time in the year, that may be the case. I'm not sure. I didn't want to hear about it any more after last Friday. I said, 'Hey, do what you have to do. I'm focused over here.' So I don't know if the letter's actually been sent. I know we talked about it. But at this point, the whole Michael Crabtree thing, you know what I'm going to say. It's over there. I'm going to focus over here. We have our hands full with the 53 (players) that we have."

Crabtree has a uniform and helmet in his locker. (There is no "SF" decal on the helmet.) Just as in all the other lockers, there is a towel hanging - ready to be used.

NFL rules state that an unsigned pick has until the Tuesday after the 10th week of the season (Nov. 17) to sign a contract to be eligible to play this season. If he does not sign, the 49ers would control his rights up until the 2010 draft. Any contract signed after Nov. 17 would be a deal that would take effect for the 2010 season.

If Crabtree does not sign, the 49ers would have about seven weeks, beginning March 1, to work a trade. Why would a team trade for Crabtree? If there's a team that does not want to roll the dice in the draft, they could acquire him in a trade. Clearly, they would have to have a pretty good idea that they'd be able to sign him.

The trade deadline has already passed for the 49ers to trade Crabtree this season. Even if they sign him, they can't trade him at this point until March 1, at the earliest.

Ultra-professional cornerback Walt Harris joined the 49ers in Arizona and flew back with the team as he continus his rehab from a torn right ACL in the offseason. Harris, 35, is ineligible to play this season, as he's on injured reserve. But he said he plans to play again. He does not want his career to end with an injury. Harris' contract with the 49ers at the conclusion of the season, so his future remains up in the air.

Who knows what will happen, I still think he is gone for the season and will get traded.

HOPEFULLY WE COULD GET A 1ST ROUND PICK ON HIM NEXT YEAR, WE WOULD HAVE 3 1ST ROUND DRAFT PICKS, WE COULD GET BERRY OR MAYS AND I WOULD LIKE THE NINERS TO EVEN TAKE JAHVID BEST IF HE COMES OUT AND TEAM HIM UPWITH GORE IN THE BACKFIELD, I KNOW WE GOT COFFE BUT WE COULD TRADE HIM FOR LIKE A 2ND OR THIRD RND PICK

Crabtree's idiocy ceases to amaze me. I mean does he really think he'll go back in the draft and go higher? If that dumbfuck goes back, he'll get drafted 20, then what? Sit out another year while demanding the money of the 10th pick?

I'm all for the 9ers lowering their offer to him. They should just squeeze him right now cause his bargaining position is going down especially after this win.

Singletary: There's trouble on the line
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/09/14/SP5C19N0TB.DTL
(09-14) 20:19 PDT -- One of the qualities the 49ers respect and appreciate about their head coach is his directness. When Mike Singletary says something, he means it. On Monday, he called out his offensive line.

* Win was great, offensive line wasn't 09.15.09
* Singletary: There's trouble on the line 09.15.09
* 49ers take it to Cardinals 09.13.09
* Singletary set the tone, which was tough and disciplined 09.13.09

"We got our tails kicked up front, it's as simple as that," Singletary said a day after his team's otherwise cheery road victory over NFC champion Arizona. "We did not play well. Our offensive line, at some point this year, will be one of the better offensive lines in the league, but in this game, they did not play well."

The din inside enclosed University of Phoenix Stadium made communication on the line difficult and was a factor in the poor showing by the offense overall. So was Arizona's game plan that called for eight and sometimes nine players in the imaginary box on the line of scrimmage, geared to stop Frank Gore. So was the Cardinals' penchant for blitzing on both running plays and passing plays.

Shaun Hill was sacked four times, with right tackle Adam Snyder appearing to be responsible for two of them. Gore averaged 1.4 yards on 22 carries and, overall, the 49ers advanced the ball via the run an average of 0.8 of a yard.

"Good teams can't do that," Singletary said.

The offensive linemen took their head coach's critique in the spirit in which it was given - it happened, learn from it, and make damn sure it doesn't happen again.

"First off, we won. We can't discount that," left guard David Baas said. "We looked at the film and we all knew what we had to. We realize Arizona brought half its team on blitzes. We have to expect that the rest of the season. We have to prepare ourselves better, execute better and not be surprised."

It's no surprise that the Cardinals ganged up on Gore with eight-man fronts. That, too, will be duplicated by San Francisco's opponents as the season progresses. Arizona revealed a template for taming Gore.

"We knew they were coming after Frank," Baas said. "We have to do a better job, and we will. There's going to be games like that. We don't want them like that. ... We're not going to hang our heads and look at the stats every night. We won the game. We have to be better."

Baas and Snyder both missed time in training camp with injuries that might have impacted their play Sunday.

"They weren't as sharp as you would like them to be," Singletary said.

Snyder, in particular, has to be better, or newcomer Tony Pashos might take his place at right tackle. Snyder had some glaring moments on half a dozen plays he'd surely like back.

Pashos, formerly with Baltimore and Jacksonville, was signed to provide depth at tackle and he might get meaningful reps in practice this week.

"We want to get a look at Pashos, see what he can do," Singletary said.

Crabtree cash shrinking?: Singletary, who is not involved in the negotiations, said it was his understanding that the 49ers sent a letter to top draft pick Michael Crabtree informing him the club is modifying its contract offer to him.

"That may be the case," the coach said.

Based on the 49ers' unconfirmed offer of $20 million over five years with $16 million guaranteed, the club is believed to be reducing its guarantee by $200,000 for each game Crabtree misses before signing his contract.

Incentives could push the value of Crabtree's contract to within a dollar of the $18 million guarantee that No. 9 pick B.J. Raji received from the Packers, according to YahooSports.com.

Per team policy, the 49ers had no comment on the latest reports regarding Crabtree.

Briefly: Cornerback Walt Harris, on injured reserve with a torn ACL, will complete his rehab at the team facility. He's in the last year of his contract and his future with the 49ers is in doubt, but Harris said he intends to play in 2010. "When it happens, your reaction is always the worst - 'Oh, man, this is it.' I initially had that mind-set," Harris said. ... Wide receiver Brandon Jones, who fractured his shoulder blade Aug. 6, said he will return to practice this week to test the progress of his rehab. He's not expected to play until later this month or early October. "They (medical personnel) told me it looks good," Jones said. "I'm wanting to play. I always want to play. I always said if you can practice, you can play."

Josh Morgan has replaced Isaac Bruce as the one 49ers receiver who stays in the game during obvious running situations.
Bruce (4/74) outproduced Morgan (3/38) in Week 1, but Morgan remains the better fantasy bet. Shaun Hill was working with short passes in the middle of the field instead of going deep and out, which explains Morgan's lack of activity in the second half.
