Coach Mike Singletary announced Shaun Hill will be the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported Monday.

Hill beat out former No. 1 pick Alex Smith for the starting job, the first time Hill will start on opening day in his eight-year career.

Smith completed just three of nine passes and threw an interception Saturday night in the 49ers' 21-20 win over the Oakland Raiders.

A source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter last week that Smith was going to have to play very well to beat out Hill for the starting job.

Hill was 3-for-7 for 20 yards after taking over to start the second quarter, and the 49ers, behind the running of Michael Robinson, were in field-goal position on both of his full series.

According to the Press Democrat, Singletary said he was in agreement with offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and QB coach Mike Johnson in making Hill the starter. Singletary said Hill's consistency and leadership helped him making his decision.

LMFAO..... it's official, Alex Smith is a bust and now will be a career back-up!

ROTOWORLD said:
Alex Smith has practiced well and will keep Hill on a short early-season leash, but Hill will lead the Niners onto the field against Arizona on Sept. 13. Still, it's a pretty safe bet that Smith will make starts in 2009. GM Scot McCloughan remains in his corner, and Hill's "7-3 career record" has been earned against very poor competition.

Hill will be on a leash

If the Niner offense suffers, it won't be because of Hill. It will be because they let go of Mike Martz. Hill ran that offense just fine. Hill will probably just end up being the scapegoat. Smith won't do any better so they can have him on a short leash if they want to. It's not like Smith is going to come in and play lights out football.

Coach Mike Singletary confirmed Monday that Adam Snyder has won the 49ers' starting right tackle job.
This is despite Snyder's recent leg injuries. They'll sideline him for the 49ers' final two exhibition games, but he's fully expected back for Week 1. Marvel Smith will be the "swing" tackle, backing up both Snyder and LT Joe Staley.

Beat reporter Matt Maiocco projects the 49ers to use a 17:6 carry ratio between Frank Gore and Glen Coffee this season.
Coffee's still just a "handcuff" fantasy pick, but has earned an early-season role with an outstanding preseason. Over 16 weeks, the 17-carry per game estimate would result in 272 for Gore, or more than he's had since 2006. It should keep him fresh, and Gore will remain oft-used in the passing game.

Former 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz says he believes Alex Smith has a future in the league, but needs "to find another team and start over."
Smith was beaten out by Shaun Hill for the 49ers' starting job. The former No. 1 overall pick might benefit from a change of scenery, but is signed cheaply through 2010 and isn't going anywhere. It's worth noting that rookie Nate Davis is impressing and may make the final roster as the No. 3 or 4 QB.

I`ve been saying the same thing about Smith. Although I would like to see the kid do good, I just don`t see it happening in SF. And just because he`s signed cheap doesn`t mean he isn`t going anywhere. The fact he is signed cheap could temp another team in a trade. If I was the GM, that would be my angle right now to get more draft picks, but considering our GM has a man-crush on him, it probably won`t happen.

Martz is NOT a good OC, and would have never worked out with Singletary. That`s why they let him go. Both guys have completely different coaching aspects. Martz is through the air, Singletary is more smash-mouth football. With the style of play he wants to run in SF, Hill can fill the position for now. Regardless, Hill knows how to lead on the field, and that`s what matters.

In order for Martz to succeed, he needs to have the personnel already in place, like he had in St Louis. He took over a team that Vermeil built, then somehow was tabbed an offensive genius. Yeah, dude was genius in Detroit and then in SF, right? What a fuckin joke.
