Boldin in the Picture?
Mike Silver of Yahoo provided an insider's view to Scot McCloughan's thought process before and during the draft. In the story, McCloughan said he would investigate trading for Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin.Jerry Sullivan would love to Boldin, who could provide additional leadership for the team's collection of young receivers. But whould the Cardinals let Boldin slip to a division rival? Boldin is also a fairly old 28, who's had persistent hamstring injuries.

Rooke Free Agents - Come On Down!
The 49ers have agreed to terms with a few players, according mostly to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat:

Michigan State defensive end Brandon Long

Ohio State tackle Alex Boone

Georiga Tech cornerback Jahi Word-Daniels

South Florida guard Matt Huners

South Carolina cornerback Carlos Thomas

Word-Daniels missed half his senior season with a hamstring injury or he might have been drafted. Word-Daniels has the size 6-0, 197 to contend with the big corners in the division but his effort and tackling ability need work.

Boone has been arrested twice, once in 2006 and once in February for alcohol related issues. In the latest incident, which may have dropped him out of the draft, he reportedly had to be subdued by a taser after jumping on cars in the Los Angeles area. If Boone does become a 49er, he'll probably be their biggest player at 6-8, 330. He played left tackle as a Buckeye and struggled against top competition including Longhorn Brain Orakpo. He'll move to the right side more than likely with the 49ers.

Thomas has the physical attributes for NFL success: 5-11, 197, with a 4.37 40-yard dash time at his pro day. He played cornerback, wide receiver and returned kicks as a freshman.

Spartan Brandon Long created a small stir with his pro day. He ran a 4.61 40 and bench pressed 225 32 times. The guy looks like he doesn't have an ounce of fat on him; can the 49ers harness the athleticism to rush the passer? This guy will could push Jay Moore for a roster spot.

General manager Scot McCloughan said he hopes to sign 12 or more rookie free agents to challenge the status quo.

Aight Niner fans we'll see... We'll have to visit this thread when the season starts. The Niners won't win more than 7 games this season. They'll go 7-9 at best, while the Raiders will go 10-6 with a playoff spot.

Peppers on the table
Now that the draft is over, the 49ers will trade for:

A. Braylon Edwards
B. Anquan Boldin
C. Julius Peppers
D. None of the above.

The correct outcome likely will be D. But C makes an awful lot of sense. Consider the following: The 49ers did not select an outside linebacker/pass rusher in the draft nor did they pick one up in free agency. Peppers, meanwhile, had 14 ½ sacks last year and has made no secret that he not only wants out of Carolina but would prefer to play for a team that uses a 3-4 defense. Paging coach Manusky ...

But wait, there's more. The Panther's have made a franchise tender offer that would pay Peppers a whopping $16.683 million in 2009. Peppers doesn't want to sign it and the Panthers have been hamstrung, salary-cap wise, because of it. The team is holding a three-day minicamp this weekend and no one in the organization is sure whether Peppers will show up. Meanwhile the 49ers shopped lightly in free agency this year and still have plenty of salary-cap space, certainly enough to ink Peppers, 29, to a long-term deal.

I don't know whether the 49ers are seriously considering Peppers. And I don't know whether they even envision Peppers as a stand-up, 3-4 outside linebacker. What I do know is that the two GM's, Scot McCloughan and Marty Hurney, already have made a deal this week. McCloughan gave Hurney his second- and fourth-round picks Sunday for Hurney's first rounder next year. The Panthers used the second rounder to draft a ... wait for it ... pass rusher, Florida State's Everette Brown. It's not a stretch to view Brown as Peppers' eventual replacement.

What will it take to pry Peppers from the Panthers? Probably a first-round pick coupled with some combination of other draft picks and/or players. The Panthers don't have a first rounder next year because of their trade with the 49ers. The 49ers, meanwhile, have two first rounders. Could they give one of them right back to Carolina for Peppers? Like I said, it makes an awful lot of sense.
