Welcome Mr. Stafford
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/ninerinsider/detail?blogid=45&entry_id=38456
Matthew Stafford, come on down! The Georgia quarterback and possible first overall pick visited the 49ers today. What does this mean? It means the Lions could go with Baylor's Jason Smith with the first overall pick and that Stafford could tumble all the way down to no. 10.

We've seen this happen before with a highly-touted thrower. Aaron Rodgers and Brady Quinn both plummeted down the board despite predictions that they'd would possibly go first overall.

Here are the other possible meanings:

1. The 49ers are using another ploy to make it seem that they're interested in a franchise quarterback so they could trade back with other teams such as Denver and Washington who are desperately seeking a hurler.

2. Within the building, there's been a sublime loss of faith in former overall pick Alex Smith. General manager Scot McCloughan was the leader in the Draft Smith First campaign in 2005 and he's been supportive of him throughout Smith's troubled tenure. But maybe others (read Mike Singletary) don't believe Smith can be a field general. Smith didn't look sharp in the most recent minicamp and his passes wobbled more than usual. At one point after missing a receiver on a slant route, he doubled over and began shaking his arm. Is Smith fully healthy? Is he recovering from his latest surgery without a glitch? Hmmmm.

3. Having Stafford come in is awkward. Stafford said a 49ers psychologist pressed him about his parents divorce and Stafford said it was strange compared to other teams who asked him to draw plays. One report said Stafford shot back then asked the psychologist how much she made. Now Stafford is coming in for more questions and interviews? It's also awkward from Tom Condon's point of view. The NFL agent to the quarterbacks represents Stafford AND Alex Smith.

So what of Stafford? The arm strength is right there with Elway and Favre. He's 3-0 in bowl games; he beat three ranked opponents as a freshman. Like any quarterback with a bazooka arm, he has a tendency to fall in love with it at times and tries to wedge balls into tight spaces, which can result in bad decisions and even interceptions. He can get into cold streaks; he's coming out as a junior, which can be problematic for quarterbacks.

But he's the best quarterback in this year's draft, and his stock has only increased since the end of last football season. Here's what one scout, quoted in Pro Football Weekly, said of his pro day: "Stafford clearly was working on his footwork. It was a lot better at his pro day. His accuracy was pretty damn good. He threw two bad balls out of 50. He was zinging it with velocity and was throwing 100-MPH fastballs on the money. It was impressive. He's not a rah-rah, vocal leader, but he knows the game."

Of course what quarterback have you ever heard of who had a bad pro day. In Utah, they cheered Alex Smith after his pro day. Now if only Stafford can push cars around like Jim Druckenmiller and throw a ball through the goal posts while sitting on his knees at the 50-yard line like Kyle Boller, then everyone will know if he's a quarterback!

The obvious question is, if he's there, do the 49ers take him?

Man Singletary hasn't proved nothing. We'll see how good he does without Martz calling the plays on the sidelines.

If Stafford's arm strength is as good as Favre's and Elways then they can't go wrong with this pick. He's 3-0 in bowl games which tells you he plays big in big games.

Cleaned up the mess that Kiffin left, and he's turning JaMarcus into a man (asking that he be more of a leader, view more film, show up early for voluntary workouts, etc...) because he was babied under Kiffin. Kiffin didn't ask much of Russell, just hand it off and throw it on occasion. Cable said screw it, put him out there and let him learn on the go. He's going to have bad games but he's our leader and that's why he's making the big bucks. You see how Russell improved as the season went on right? (peep the last two games of the season). Cable's approach is much better.... And Cable is our play caller.

Mike Singletary hasn't done anything other than pull down his pants in the locker room and send Vernon Davis to the locker room early.

I am just interested in seeing how he's going to do "without" Martz. Cable was just an offensive line coach and he took on a huge challenge when Kiffin was fired. Singletary was already an "assistant" head coach, I believe, but correct me if I am wrong.

Kiffin created a mess? uhhh no AL DAVIS DID u fuckin dumb fuck, Kiffin wasnt able to bring in his own people, Al Davis brought in every1, including that piece of shit quarterback Jamarcus Russell.

This is where your dumbfuckery hits an all time high, once Sing took over, Martz had to water down his playbook heavily to compliment Shaun Hill, there was no more of the stupid ass bombs all games, it took more of a west coast offense look to it. Go back into your raider thread and spew your ignorance there.

Kiffin was able to bring in his own people. He wanted his dad, Monte Kiffin hired as D coordinator but Al said no because of NFL Rules (tampering). Monte was still under contract with the Bucs at the time, Kiff is known to violate rules and Al wasn't having it. Kiff got mad because he couldn't always get his way.

I didn't see Sing calling any plays... The Niners improved because Nolan brought in Mike Martz to run the Niner offense. And I didn't see stupid bombs, what I saw was Vernon Davis short arming those bombs.

Actually they are not because your arguement about Al Davis being 100% responsible for the fall out isn't true...Kiffin and Al are both to blame. You are also incorrect when you say Kiffin had no control over who was brought in..Kiffin was responsible for most of the coaching staff including cable. He was also the one who wanted to trade for McCown and Mike Williams.

if it was all martz why did nolan go 2-5 and lost his job N why did they take out J.T being he was Martz QB?
I said Matz was responsible for changing that offense.... J.T. was puttin' up money but he was also wild at times. He'd be playing hella good and then 1 or 2 bad throws ended up as INT's. He got benched and Shaun Hill came in like always and still played pretty good. J.T. got benched but it was still Martz' offense that was being run.

And don't forget who's idea it was to trade Moss, even though Moss wanted out. Only Kiffin would trade Moss for a 4th rounder.... We all know Al may have approved the trade and he did it to give Kiff some kind of control. Al Davis would have gotten more than a 4th round pick (that was traded for McCown and Mike Williams, LOL). Mike Williams was from USC where Kiffin was from, Al Davis wouldn't trade for a slow as receiver like Mike. That was Kiffin's call, so, so much for Al Davis running everything.
