Upon further review, the 49ers are interested in Jeff Jagodzinski after all.
The team interviewed the controversial former Boston College coach on Tuesday in Mobile, Ala., the site of the upcoming Senior Bowl.
Jagodzinski, 45, is the latest to audition for the vacant offensive coordinator job. He is the first to meet with team officials since Scott Linehan, the former St. Louis Rams coach, turned down the 49ers’ offer Sunday.
Linehan’s decision apparently opened a door that had been closed to Jagodzinski. A week ago, a source close to the 49ers said the team had no plans to interview the fired Boston College coach.
The denial came shortly after Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post reported on Jan. 12 that the 49ers’ had interest Jagodzinski.
On Tuesday, Jagodzinski indeed met with Coach Mike Singletary and General Manager Scot McCloughan. There were some tough questions to be asked.
Jagodzinski recently contacted the New York Jets about their head-coaching vacancy then lied about it, according to reports. Boston College Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo responded by firing the coach with three years remaining on Jagodzinski’s five-year contract.
A native of Milwaukee, Jagodzinski has more than 20 years coaching experience at the college or professional level.
His NFL experience includes the 2006 season as the Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator under Coach Mike McCarthy. That team finished ninth in the NFL in yards and 22nd in the league in points.
Jagodzinski also coached Packers tight ends (1999-03) and the Atlanta Falcons offensive line (2004-05).
He becomes the fifth person to interview for the 49ers vacancy, following Linehan, Colts receiver coach Clyde Christensen, former Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and Broncos assistant Rick Dennison (who has since accepted a job to stay with in Denver).
