No, not JUST the NFL, but in ALL of pro sports. AL Central is second.
Carl Bialik at the Wall Street Journal has statistically proven what many Seattle sports fans have known in their hearts for years – the NFC West is the worst division in any U.S. professional sport. And it's not even close.
Since the four-division NFC was created in 2002, the Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams have won just 37.5 percent of their games against non-divisional opponents.
Bialik writes that the underachieving is a true group effort.
From Bialik's blog post:
The American League Central is the second worst division with a winning percentage of 47.8. The NBA's Atlantic Division (43.9 percent) and the NHL's Southeast Division (43 percent) were the third and fourth worst.
On the bright side, the American League West is the second best division, winning 51.8 percent of its games. Unfortunately, the Mariners have done little to help their division-mates. The NFL's AFC South is the best division, winning at a 58.1 percent clip.
