Nintendo's next console will debut at E3 in June, moving the maker of Mario and Zelda into the HD era. The news, first reported by Game Informer today, confirms rumors that have been swirling for months in the wake of slowing game releases from Nintendo.

Furthermore, we've heard that the machine will be more powerful than current-gen systems, meaning Nintendo, currently backing a Wii that is weaker in horsepower than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will be showing a new console that is more powerful than those current competitors.

We've asked Nintendo for comment and will let you know if they shock us and spill the beans. Update: Nintendo responded to our inquiry with a standard "Nintendo does not comment on rumor or speculation".

E3 kicks off on June 7, though Nintendo's E3 press conference may occur the day before, if tradition holds.

Yeah this needs to be on the same level or even better than the top tier gaming PC specs of today to think of competing long term, seeing as the next system from xbox will most likely debut in a year or 2.

haha they gonna call it the "wii wii"

they already debuting the next console because they clearly fucked up...but if it is more powerful than 360 and ps3 it wont be long before we see microsoft and sony answer back with far superior consoles...at most the wii wii will be a contender but not a dominator

They clearly fucked up? How so? They have sold almost as many Wii's worldwide as PS3's and 360's combined. Not to mention that the main reason they made the Wii for, the motion controls, was emulated by both the other companies, to try to compete. I guess from a standpoint that they can't provide the online play or have the graphical capabilities as their competitors but you can't deny that Nintendo is clearly winning where it counts.

It needs to be better than the current consoles because when they drop their next gen consoles, it will be better than the next nintendo console.

I don't know how many people I know that have a wii that never play that crap. The novelty of having a controller that follows your movements wears off quick

great for Nintendo being the first to the motion controls...but with terrible graphics, shitty online and games looking like shit from last generation if not further for some...sorry its a piece of shit...people bought into the idea and most let it collect dust...its great for kids, it's marketed for family game nights...i at one point wanted one but couldn't bring myself to waste money....i might buy one for 50 that's what its worth to me...millions buying into it doesn't mean it was a right choice...millions bought a pet rock and sea monkeys too

The main question is will nintendo make games that are innovative and take full advantage of the hardware. In the past they have been creative but lately they've been slacking a bit, I don't see them ever stepping outside of cartoon graphics with their products let alone most of their popular games are 2D sidescrollers.

That just means the pet rock and sea monkeys weren't failures either.
The fact is, you might not like it, but plenty of people are still buying the Wii and games that are made for the wii.

You can say whatever you like but the bottom line is...the wii was the furthest thing from being a failure. Not even close. Business is all about profit. IN those terms, Nintendo has laughed all the way to the bank.

That's why I like Nintendo, they will take big risks making crazy accessories or hardwares even if it means it fails epically and blows up in their face. They just do it moving onto the next project, which is usually a big money maker(from the virtual boy to the game boys). The console they took the least risk on the Gamecube, which had superior graphics to the PS2, sold the least of that console generation.
