Depends... Are you talking about just using the computer as a sequencer? Using VSTI's for instruments? Using the computer as a sampler?

Your question is pretty vague but basically the better your computer, the more you'll be able to do. The better your computer, the more voices you can have, the VSTI's playing simutaneously, the more tracks you can have, etc...

A computer is only a tool. The more capable & robust your tools are, the more you'll be able to do with them.

If you are going to build a computer or have one built you should build it as if you are going to run Pro Tools. The reason I say this is because Pro Tools is a resource hog and it can be VERY problematic if you don't build it to spec. When you do build a pro tools computer to spec it works flawlessly. I built my pc for pro tools, but cubase sx is what I use for my own projects, and it works like a charm.

Macs are cool, but if you go to the digi duc and you search the forum you will see that pc's destroy the macs when it comes down to performence. Hit the digi duc, go to the pro tools for windows section and read the thread BEST DESKTOPS FOR PTLE. The thread is 200 pages long (not 200 replies) and contains A LOT of info.

But if you can get the g5 for a good price snatch it. My specs are similar to those g5 specs, and I didn't even pay a grand for the computer. Your main tool right now is the digi duc and I can't stress that enough. Make sure you hit that site and do a search for G5.

well from experience from pc to now mac....
my mac is loading alot faster than the pc not sure how lol..my mac is the new imac g5 (512mb) can only imagine with the 2.5gb of ram ..compared to a pent.4 2.8ghz 1gb (which was a vpr matrix comp like 2-3 yrs old, way more faster pc's now) have yet to record a multitrack session, only recorded a 1 track from the turntables and it ran flawless...i know ill need more ram..but im broke now.. and then i will put it to the test for myself to see.
i ran into a few problems on the mac tho.. cause im new to this mac os..but soon figured out the problem...repair permissions!! :)
also found out a few of my programs had problems installing cause they werent mac compatible... doh!! i forgot about that there heh, but hell i always wanted a mac...so i could experience both platforms.
i say get what you like ejukated_ent though they are both good for the protools....

I'd recommend www.newegg.com for buying cheap computers.

Also, for PC users, things like:

managing startup and running processes

spyware and adware removal

memory optimizing and using a memory optimizer

Registry clean / Registry defrag

Disabling unncessary windows services

Having your computer delete your page file on shutdown

Making hard drive partitions (One for Music, One for Games, One for Windows)

Can drastically speed up your computer. 2 times, 3 times, 4 times Faster

If you have the technical know-how, you can do alot of this yourself.

One GREAT program, however, for this is Tuneup Utilities 2006.

If u get TU 2006 and run all the optimizers, it's almost like working with a new PC.

I'd highly recommend buying TuneUp 2006 if you don't have the technical know-how to manage your running processes, keep your registry clean, and disable unnecessary programs and services.

http://www.tune-up.com/

For Partitioning, I'd recommend Partition Magic.

http://www.powerquest.com/home_homeoffice/products/system_performance/pm80/index.html

Using both of these programs can make your PC feel like new.

Im building a PC right now using an AMD dual core 4800+ proc. I was gonna buy 4gigs of corsair XMS RAM. Do you think thats overkill, or should I go for it? I want to be sure that Ill always have enough RAM no matter what.
