OK, you guys know how Pharrel from the Neptunes is in damn near everyone's video... well last night I literally had a dream where E-40 had a video on MTV with a Neptunes beat and Pharrell singing the hook. I woke up and IT HIT ME!

Can this happen? I mean, I dont know how the buisness works, but Im sure 40 Water can shell out some ends to get the Neptunes to produce a couple radio tracks. And you know it will be successful, cause them dudes is golden right now.

BUt then, why not have the biggest name in Yay (E40) get in good with some of the other hottest producers right now, cause like I said before this game is all about who produces your shit nowadays.

So now Forty Water, bigest representative for the Bay, can get some dudes like Dre, Neptunes, Timbaland, Swizz Beats, Kanye West, Premier, Mannie Fresh... all them dudes that be making hot radio hits. If E-40 had these dudes producing some shit and making some tight ass radio hits, he will get noticed, and so will the Yay in which he represents so wonderfully. I mean, he already got Ric Rock from the jump, and look at the heat he be producin now nationwide! RicRock got ties to Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, and others now! Ric Rock and E40 can help make this happen.

AND THEN

Ric Rock and E-40 can put the project together as a compilation or something where they get together the Yays biggest rap talents (Quinn, Cellski, etc.) to spit on top of the nation's biggest production talents (Dre, Neptunes) right alongside the nations hottest rappers (Jay Z, Ja Rule)

I mean, can you imagine a track produced by the Neptunes, with San Quinn and Jay Z flippin verses on the same track, and Pharell on the hook? You cant tell me that wont be hit with both coasts and the South.

THIS CAN HAPPEN, CANT IT? I mean Ric Rock is in the door already, E40 is steppin through that door, all they need to do is hold the door open for the rest of the Yay to bumrush that bitch.

And where's SWAYs ass in all this. I mean, dude is on MTV now and he pretty much just gave up on the Yay... what the fuck is that? He can be a bigass help... Too Short can help out on the ATL end too!

So with E40, Ric Rock, Sway, and Too Short already deep into the game, why isn't the Bay blowing up like it should be? My idea can happen! Why hasnt it happened yet???

All this from my dream last night... is that all this is? A dream?

Honestly, Im not tryin to hate on 40 but heres the way I see it:

40 is a good rapper. But he's past his prime. His best albums were made 6 years ago. His last effort was worthy, but not "In a Major Way," which was like his peak. Not only that, but 40 has been around the way for years, and too my knowledge, he hasnt really done anything to help the bay's most talented artists blow. I mean, 40 has known Quinn is king of the 'Sco for years and hasnt ever put him on one of his solo albums. I know he makes guest appearences and is in good with Quinn and all the other bay area rappers, but you'd think if 40 was gonna make the bay blow it woulda happened a long time ago.

Besides that, people on the Eastcoast hate on E-40 "in a major way." If you've ever posted at sohh.com you'd see the blatent hate. People think he is a square bear punk with no rhymes. Of course, we all know 40 is a pioneer and a sav but they won't accept him. I think the bay would blow up if a different artist got exposure like Quinn or Yukmouth. They are comming with heat, have the skills, and the battling skills to get respect.

Im not saying 40's days are numbered, I love 40s music. I dont think he is gonna be the one to bring the bay to the fourfront though.

Exactly what im sayin. But theres plenty of new booties in the bay. But you didnt ever see 40 giving Quinn or Fully Loaded or Cozmo or the Riddla or any newcomers with talent a shot on his album. He did hook Harm and Keak up though on that one song.

40 had one of the hottest producers right now (Rick rock) produce his last CD and that didnt blow him up. 40 will never blow up on the east coast, those squares out there are too closed minded to feel someone as dope as 40 water. Besides, he has the respect of the rest of the country, who the hell needs NY...

Also, im getting tired of people trying to get the respect of the east coast. Rappers alienate thier core audiences just to get some precious radio play in NY, eg Snoop. I say fuck NY, west coast rappers need to make CDs for the west coast with funky azz beats. People wanna hear that, NY always bites our shit anyway, let them come to us...

Agreed. Music does not gain its' definition of good or bad based on whether or not EVERYBODY ELSE likes it--it only matters if YOU like it. Why is getting love from NY so goddamned important to people?

Historically, New York has never accepted any genre of music not from New York. If you go back to the 1970s', Disco music--which originated in NY clubs--got much love and airplay (i.e. CHIC, DONNA SUMMER, etc.) in NY and the East Coast in general, but Hardcore Funk/Soul (P-FUNK, BRASS CONSTRUCTION, OHIO PLAYERS, etc,) got scorned and shitted on by NY the same way West Coast street Rap gets dissed today. New Yorkers just don't want to accept that there's any other city in the world but NY.

The same applies to Jazz music. Back in the '50s, the West Coast established its' own laid-back Jazz sound, known as "Cool Jazz," with great musicians like drummer SHELLY MANNE, pianist VINCE GUARALDI, baritone saxaphonist GERRY MULLIGAN, alto saxman LEE KONITZ and many others. These artists, too, were constantly dissed by Jazz critics and fans in New York, who didn't like the mellow, song-based approach these musicians took, as opposed to the more improvisatory approach of East Coast Jazzers like JOHN COLTRANE, MILES DAVIS, CHARLIE MINGUS, etc.

Also, beyond music, remember this: back in '95, when BOB DOLE, C. DELORES TUCKER and WILLIAM BENNETT were on their idiotic little "ban Gangsta Rap" kick, I don't remember ANYONE from New York defending DEATH ROW or any of the other West Coast artists (who were those cretins' primary target). In '96, ICE CUBE told THE SOURCE that East Coasters at Rap seminars had the attitude of "well, the West Coast 'fucked up' Rap, so they deserve the criticism, blah blah blah..." So why expect any support from them now?

Basically, the Bay Area needs to stay on the grind and keep on keepin' on, as the expression goes. Even if it doesn't ever completely blow up, that won't stop me personally from continuing to support and buy Bay Area Rap CDs, because I don't give a shit if someone criticizes me for not going along with the crowd. And hey--isn't individuality what music should be about? PEACE!

Im not saying the Bay should be trying to impress New York... as a matter of fact FUCK NEW YORK. Im saying the Bay should be trying to impress the entire country. And by gettin on some tracks with some appriciated acts, our Bay Area artists will be heard, and fans will be formed. Its not like we dont have the talent, its that we dont have the attention. The Bay needs to smack some mutha fuckas in the face with some shit that'll get that attention. Thats all Im talkin about, ya feel?

I like this thread....yet another good one, like the one Tay posted. All I can say is 40 has done more for the bay than any nigga out. I respect him and no matter what the industry or any coast says...."he's a legend". I like the fact that someone said folks in the bay need to be trying to impress the world. I think we all want that...some just don't know how to go about doing it. I don't have none of the answers to that either, cause if I did...I'd be blown the fuck up now too. But I can say that hittin the road and gettin out there face to face with cats is a good start. I learned that this year....the south put me up on that. Cats like David Banner, Flip and more. I read up on them and folks say that they were on the road all the time funding it themselves and driving out to do features etc. The road trips is where they picked up the scraggler fans that weren't up on em and eventually spread like wild fire. I don't know but it seems smart and that is something I am trying to do now and will be doing once I drop my next two releases....only live once.

Here's my opinion...
Suga T, and D Shot, Mac Shawn, The Mossie, Funk Mobb, Levitti is his folks. He hooked his folks up. A Quinn or Mr. Kee or Fully Loaded are much more lyrically talented than these folks.

C-Bo, Spice 1, Mac Mall, Pac, and Celly Cell were all established artists when they appeared on his Cd. Except maybe Celly from way back in the day, but Celly aint famous from 40 he's famous from Its Goin Down.

In terms of the "best" artists in the bay, my opinion is 40 has ignored them. He chose to blow his folks up, a choice I probly would make too, but you see where its got those artists now....They aint the best crop from the yay, they 40s folks.

And fuck impressing New York. If they aint with it thats there fault. But if you look at the rap monopoly right now the Eastcoast is setting the trends, in order to go major you'll have to impress an Eastcoastr Exec. even with MTV/BET.

40 is my favorite chopper. Down here in datgo and L.A. folks dont really dig him because they cannot understand him. His main fan base is the yay because we are damn near the only area, region, what ever you call it- they understands his slang!!!!!!

the problem is with the fans putting extreme pressure on the artists
"why can't you make an album like you did in 95"
so unnamed rapper does this and is told he's outdated

"why can't you spit those bay area gangsta lyrics like you used to"
so unnamed rapper does then is criticized for not being as lyrical as his east coast counterparts...

"why don't you keep it west coast"
well, the mothafucka that INTRODUCED the west coast style, and the few after him, were innovaters, and the ones that followed close behind expanded upon this music, making it even a more defined style with it's own little sects/styles...pretty much, we NEED OUTSIDE INFLUENCE...because right now there's tons of great rappers in the bay, but it seems like a lot of new cats are immitating them (how many cats try to sound like Killa Tay now??? prime example, Tay is the only one who rocks that shit right...an innovator) but don't be stubborn, the cat with the most diverse taste in music, IS GOING TO BE THE INNOVATOR...point blank

he's going to be the one with ideas running through his head constantly...and he'll naturally just make a new sound...

so we need to expand, and not hate on cats for doing new things (example Luni and Guce) because all they are doing is brining in a fresh new sound...

fuck being stale, keep it movin'

and what we all need to do...is put our money on one rapper, i'm serious...get Quinn some Rick Rock, Dre, Kayne West, Just Blaze, Sean T beats...and let him blow the scene up for us...
