UPDATE
LONG BEACH, July 17, 2007 (KABC-TV) - There was an angry confrontation in the Long Beach courthouse as a mother pleads not guilty to murder charges. Thirty-year-old Eva Daley is accused of driving her son and other teens to a park to attack 13-year-old Jose Cano. He was killed in that attack. On Tuesday, the victim's supporters clashed with the defendant's.
Several members of the victim's family and the defendant's family sat in the courtroom Tuesday afternoon virtually side-by-side. Clearly emotions were running high, because it took just a small misunderstanding with a news cameraman to trigger a heated confrontation between the families.
Angry family members lashed out at a camera crew outside the courtroom where minutes before, 30-year-old Eva Daley faced a judge for the first time. Daley is accused of driving her 14-year-old son and six other teens to a park in Long Beach, allegedly for the purpose of killing Jose Cano, a 13-year-old boy from a rival gang.
The victim's aunt, who didn't want to be identified, told a Spanish station's news crew that Daley should have to pay for what she did. Moments later, a family member of Daley's grabbed the camera and allegedly shoved the cameraman out of the way.
Inside the courtroom, Daley pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder and gang allegations. The prosecution says her son and the six other young suspects also face murder charges and may be tried as adults.
There's a lot of gang crimes going on out there. They're getting younger and younger," said prosecutor John Lonergan. "if the defendants [are] convicted of the current charge, with the gang allegation, that carries a 25-to-life -- plus a 10-year gang allegation, that's 35-years-to-life."
The other seven defendants, all of them boys, range in age from 14- to 17-years-old.
As for Daley, she's expected back in court on August 22. Meantime, she's being held on $1-million-dollar bail.
