Thank you all for taking the time to slither an eyeball across the visual imagery that I’ve fabricated. Here are some of my thoughts in regards to random statements and/or critiques.
First & foremost this is a composite of approximately 15 various images & 68 layers of labor in Photoshop.
1) Text size: Typography is an important part of design as we all know, but it ought to be used wisely & factored into the composition accordingly. In my cover designs I choose to let the aura of the piece be determined by the visual depiction I conjure up. Larger sized fonts/text only “cover up” what I see as valued space to put something far more interesting. In my humble opinion, by using huge lettering limits creativity, or in most cases I’ve seen (not all but most), HIDES an artist’s inability to be creative or pull off a detailed piece of artwork. Look at most any & all PROFESSIONAL designs that will appear on the covers of your favorite DVD’s (key word being professional).
2) Marketable subjects: Yes, these are Caucasian individuals that are putting out a rap album. Unfortunately our stereotypical world of hip-hop irritates the pupils of onlookers & leads us to believe that they may not be marketable because they don’t look visually intimidating or because they don’t resemble a character from Menace II Society.
3) Scaling of the humans – The humans are about as close as you’ll get to being correctly scaled. The way I ensured that it would be is by taking a picture of myself (I’m about 6’0” so I estimated Mo-X’s height) in a ditch & then lined them up to my picture. So that is the thing, that they are in a ditch so they would not be showing their entire body. A detail-catching eye would notice the positioning of the headstone in the dirt by the shovel in the background, which shows the angle of the dirt as sloping downward in comparison to the front. Look at the lighting on the dirt & objects in the foreground compared to the images towards the back which also gives a sense of distance as well as angle. The objects in the front are a pair of gloves & shovel which I feel is rather easy to make out but of course I put them there so I definitely know what they are. Nobody else I’ve shown had a problem figuring that out.
Thanks for all the comments & I appreciate the honesty. Just know that when you do a cover you should study & research your concepts before you even begin. Brainstorming is a huge part of my designs. I’ll take a few days to map out my concept & then the actual design time is only a few hours. I look at my designs for a day or two & tweak it to my liking. This is art…& great art is produced by breaking rules presented to you in textbooks or by what is considered “normal”.
