Wanderlei Out Of Sonnen Fight, Sonnen Now Faces Vitor Belfort

Wand is fucking up, he's already pulled out of this fight like 3 times, now he fucks around and makes it impossible to get licensed by not showing up for medicals.

Wanderlei Silva off UFC 175, Chael Sonnen to fight Vitor Belfort - Bloody Elbow

Things just got surreal in here. After months of prodding and taunting by Chael Sonnen, Wanderlei Silva appears to have proven "The American Gangster" right in the end and has been removed from UFC 175. Combate reports that failure to comply with licensing regulations, by way of a missed pre-fight medical exams, were the reason from Silva's removal from the card. It's almost too strange to be believed, but in Silva's place, and on the same card as the middleweight champion Chris Weidman who he was originally scheduled to face, Vitor Belfort has apparently been booked to face Chael Sonnen.

Sonnen will come in to the bout seven months removed from a shellacking at the hands of Rashad Evans. In the interim he's coached a season of TUF Brazil, and had already teased a drop to middleweight. His fight with Belfort will remain a light heavyweight bout, at least according to initial reports. Pre-taping TUF Brazil, and all throughout the shows air time, Sonnen had claimed that Wanderlei would never actually step in the cage with him. What seemed to be nothing more than his typical bluster appears to have been right on the money, if reports of Wanderlei skipping medical exams are true.

For Vitor Belfort, this fight announcement is merely the latest chapter in his increasingly surreal saga. Following his win over Dan Henderson, Belfort was all lined up to be the next middleweight challenger. The sudden imposition of anti-TRT regulations (and whispers about a potentially failed drug test) scuppered his chance to fight Weidman at UFC 173. Since then he's been in the news, demanding to replace Lyoto Machida at UFC 175, and denying that his last Nevada drug test was anything worth mentioning. While he's not getting the title shot he wanted, Combate reports that he has been cleared to fight in Nevada and will have no trouble being licensed against Sonnen.

Included in Combate's report was the news that in light of Wanderlei's actions, the UFC may be considering termination of his contract. Bloody Elbow will be sure to keep you updated with more information as it becomes available.

UFC 175 takes place on July 5th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Matt Brown vs. Robbie Lawler headlines UFC on FOX 12 in San Jose

THIS IS GOING TO BE A FUCCIN WAR!!!!! Cant believe nobody posted this! lol

Two of the sport’s most entertaining and highest-ranked welterweights will headline the UFC’s next network-televised event.

UFC President Dana White today announced that recent winners Matt Brown (19-11 MMA, 12-5 UFC) and Robbie Lawler (23-10 MMA, 8-4 UFC) will headline UFC on FOX 12.

UFC on FOX 12 takes place July 26 as San Jose’s SAP Center. The main card airs on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Lawler is ranked No. 3 and Brown is No. 5 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA welterweight rankings, which will be published later today.

White later confirmed the fight will serve as a title eliminator.

Brown recently picked up his seventh straight UFC win after scoring a dramatic come-from-behind TKO victory over Erick Silva in UFC Fight Night 40′s headliner. It earned some high praise from White.

The 33-year-old Ohioan has knocked out six opponents during his remarkable streak. Despite wins over Mike Pyle, Jordan Mein and Mike Swick, “The Immortal” has been criticized for lack of quality competition during his run at the belt.

However, if he can get by Lawler, who narrowly lost to Hendricks in March in a bout for the vacant belt, that’ll no longer be an issue. The 32-year-old Lawler, who now trains out of Florida’s American Top Team, rebounded this past weekend at UFC 173 with a lopsided TKO win over Jake Ellenberger. “Ruthless” is now 4-1 in his past five fights, which came after a move from middleweight to welterweight.

The latest UFC on FOX 12 card includes:

Matt Brown vs. Robbie Lawler
Anthony Johnson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Michael Johnson vs. Josh Thomson
Daron Cruickshank vs. Jorge Masvidal
Dennis Bermudez vs. Clay Guida
Noad Lahat vs. Steven Siler
Kyle Kingsbury vs. opponent TBA

They did that because of all the shit talk Barao did leading up to the fight about how TJ has zero stand up and TJ shouldn't be talking about standing with him.

ONE FC 16 results: Ben Askren submits Bakhtiyar Abbasov in promotional debut

Despite a brief scare in the opening seconds of the fight, Ben Askren (13-0) kept his undefeated record intact with a first-round submission of Bakhtiyar Abbasov (11-3) in today’s ONE FC 16 headliner at Singapore Indoor Arena.

ben-askren-one-fc-16In the bout, which streamed in North America as an online pay-per-view, Abbasov surprised Askren when he shot for a takedown in the first 10 seconds of the contest. While that’s an impressive feat in itself, the move ultimately led to his demise. Askren, an Olympian and former Bellator MMA welterweight champion, quickly reversed position and began to tee off with a ground-and-pound attack.

While Abbasov absorbed a commendable amount of damage, he eventually succumbed to the pressure and submitted to the arm-triangle choke at the 4:21 mark of Round 1.

Askren was expected to challenge for the ONE FC welterweight title in his promotional debut, but the fight failed to come to fruition. However, following his victory over Abbasov, the 29-year-old made it clear he still wants that matchup with a callout of 170-pound champion Nobutatsu Suzuki (11-1-2).

“Suzuki is going to bring me my belt,” Askren said in his post-fight interview. “He can put it in the middle of the cage and give it to me, or I can take it the hard way.”

Roy Nelson vs. Mark Hunt targeted for UFC Fight Night 51 in Japan

A heavyweight bout between sluggers Roy Nelson (20-9 MMA, 7-5 UFC) and Mark Hunt (9-8-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) is expected to be part of September’s UFC Fight Night 51 event in Japan.

The long-rumored bout, which UFC President Dana White confirmed with mmaplanet.jp, is expected to serve as the main event. UFC officials haven’t made a formal announcement.

UFC Fight Night 51 takes place Sept. 20 at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, just outside Tokyo. The event is expected to stream on UFC Fight Pass.

Hunt is ranked No. 8 and Nelson is No. 10 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings.

Nelson was riding high soon after winning “The Ultimate Fighter 10″ and going on a 4-1 run from 2011-2013. However, the 37-year-old ex-IFL champ then suffered back-to-back decisions losses to Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier, and his job with the UFC was in jeopardy. However, back in April, he scored a first-round knockout of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and earned “Performance of the Night” honors.

He now meets Hunt, who had resurrected his career and moved into title contention following a recent four-fight UFC winning streak that included three knockouts, one of which came over Stefan Struve. However, the 40-year-old PRIDE vet then suffered a knockout loss to former champ Junior Dos Santos, and in his most recent bout, he fought to a majority draw against Antonio Silva (in a “Fight of the Night” performance) in December.
