M-1 Global debuts tonight on Showtime; execs hope for long-term deal

For now, Showtime is testing the waters with M-1 Global.

But the Russia-based fight promotion hopes that four events scheduled to air on the premium-cable channel will lead to a long-term relationship.

The experiment starts tonight with the broadcast of "M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa," which takes place at the Constant Center in Norfolk, Va., and airs at 11 p.m. ET/PT.

M-1 Global struck a broadcast deal with Showtime in January as part of a contract renegotiation with heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko. Three more U.S.-based events are scheduled to air sometime in 2011.

Of course, the recent purchase of Strikeforce by the UFC raised questions about its effects on Showtime's relationship with the California-based promotion and M-1 Global.

While it's unknown how the buyout will affect both companies in the long term, M-1 Global officials said there is no immediate change on the horizon for their company.

"The speed at which the landscape of MMA can change certainly makes for interesting news, but the purchase of Strikeforce does not change our relationship with Showtime in any way," M-1 Global director of operations Evgeni Kogan told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "As for our relationship with Strikeforce, we've enjoyed working together with them in the past and look forward to continuing working together in the future."

Kogan said several M-1 Global events streamed live to fans, including an M-1 Selection event streamed live this past May on MMAjunkie.com, have already laid the groundwork for a successful broadcast on Showtime.

But tonight's show is undoubtedly an important night in the promotion's history.

"We hope that our relationship with Showtime continues long-term regardless of the Strikeforce purchase," Kogan said. "The U.S. is 'the' market to compete in for MMA, and (Showtime executive) Ken Hershman has been vocal about having Showtime televise quality cards showcasing top prospects and lesser-known international stars.

"The M-1 Challenge fits this mold perfectly, and we're excited to be associated with such an incredible partner."

"M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa" features several top European prospects and includes two title fights: lightweight champ Artiom Damkovsky (8-4) makes his first title defense against Jose Figueroa (9-4), and Tyson Jeffries (7-4) meets Magomed Sultanakhmedov (14-5) in a contest for the promotion's vacant middleweight title. Kogan said no major changes are planned for the broadcast format of the event.

Future events are expected to feature other stars in the upcoming promotion: Undefeated heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili (11-0), virtually undefeated welterweight champion Shamil Zavurov (14-1) and lightweight contender Daniel Weichel (26-7), who holds a victory over UFC standout Dennis Siver.

"Showcasing a wide array of talent is incredibly important," Kogan said. "M-1 has signed some of Europe's top fighters and will continue to scour the earth looking for more to add our growing roster."

Of course, the European scene has largely been off the radar of most American MMA fans. But that may change after this year.

"The main goal of this event is to showcase exciting, entertaining fights so we make a positive impact with fans and continue to build awareness and popularity inside the U.S and around the world," Kogan said.

The full lineup for "M-1 Challenge: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa" includes:

Bellator Champ Lombard Hacks Into Doerksen in CFC 16 Headliner

SYDNEY, Australia -- Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard successfully defended his other title -- the Cage Fighting Championships middleweight crown -- Friday night at the Big Top Arena in Luna Park, as the Cuban Olympian earned a doctor's stoppage over tough Canadian Joe Doerksen in the headliner of CFC 16.

Lombard opened with a powerful left hook that stunned “El Dirte,” who immediately tried to get the American Top Team fighter on the ground. When it did hit the mat, it was Lombard on top, attacking with flurries of punches and elbows. Referee Steve Perceval stood the pair up, but Lombard landed a solid right hook that sat Doerksen down against the cage. It was here that Lombard landed a series of punches and elbows against the fence that opened up a large cut above the Canadian's hairline.

The blood flowed quickly, and before long Percival called the doctor into the cage to inspect the damage: the cut was two-and-a-half inches long, and the ringside physician remarked that he could see Doerksen's skull. The bout was then mercifully stopped, prompting a loud chorus of boos from the crowd.

"Hey guys, don't boo me please," implored the disappointed Lombard after the fight. "I represent Australia every time I fight; I don't know what to say to be honest." Next for the 33-year-old Lombard is a non-title affair for Bellator, as he takes on gritty Hawaiian veteran Falaniko Vitale at Bellator 44 on May 14 in Atlantic City, N.J.

In the co-feature, Manuel Rodriguez earned a unanimous decision (30-28, 30-28, 29-29) over New Zealand's "Hot Rod" Rodney "Hot Rod" MacSwain to become the No. 1 contender for CFC welterweight champion Jesse Juarez.

Having fought to an exciting decision at CFC 14 last June which Rodriguez won, the two fighters picked up exactly where they had left off. Rodriguez opened the bout with fierce low kicks, controlling the distance expertly. The TP Fight Team-trained fighter didn't have it all his own way though, as his New Zealander foe constantly moved forward in an attempt to get inside the range of the low kick, landing punches to the body and head.

The second round was the most entertaining of the three. Rodriguez bloodied the nose of the Kiwi with a stiff jab, before putting him on the mat where he threatened with an armbar with seconds left in the round. At the bell, MacSwain had Rodriguez lifted off the ground in an effort to slam out of the hold, but he resisted the temptation, giving a big smile to the crowd and letting Rodriguez down gently.

The pair slowed in the third after their furious first 10 minutes, but still managed an in-fight congratulatory high-five. MacSwain went for broke with a guillotine in the third, allowing Rodriguez to close out the fight with some heavy ground-and-pound to claim the decision, and the right to fight for Juarez's title.

In bantamweight action, Australian-based Nebraskan Nick Honstein put on a grappling clinic to finish Matt Wilken 63 seconds into the second round with a rear-naked choke.

After coming to the cage wearing a Daft Punk-style helmet with accompanying Daft Punk soundtrack, Honstein used the rubber guard in impressive fashion to control Southern Cross Jiu-Jitsu's Wilken, threatening with omoplatas, gogoplatas and armbars throughout the opening five minutes.

Wilken bravely made it to the first break, however, a quick scramble at the beginning of the second round saw Honstein briefly have full mount, then take the back and finish the choke for his third straight victory.

Lion Den's Josh Payne submitted Aussie-based New Zealander Jason Harris by armbar. The lightweight impressed with his grappling, transitioning from a triangle to the fight-ending armbar at 3:56 of the opening frame.

House of Pain's Chris Woranjowski and the Lion's Den Academy's Alex "Bolo" Le had a hard-fought welterweight battle that saw Woranjowski take the unanimous decision (30-28, 30-28, 29-29).

TP Fight Team's Zein Saliba rear-naked choked Chris Lofts 4:27 into their light heavyweight bout. In middleweight action, Lion's Den fighter Charlie Sukkar armbarred Luke Butler 66 seconds into their contest, while Chris Pattison punched out Chris Carterat 1:56 of the first round.

In the opening bout of the evening, heavyweight Marcelo Altieri defeated Leon Johns in just 70 seconds via arm-triangle choke.

Bellator’s 205-Pound Quarterfinals Cleared

Pride Fighting Championships veteran Daniel Gracie will make his promotional debut when he collides with the unbeaten Tim Carpenter in the Bellator Fighting Championships Season 4 light heavyweight tournament quarterfinals at Bellator 38 on Saturday at the Harrah’s Casino Tunica Event Center in Robinsonville, Miss.

Gracie (205.2) and Carpenter (205) met their contracted weights at Friday’s official weigh-in, along with the participants in the three other quarterfinal matchups: D.J. Linderman (205.6) vs. Raphael Davis (205.2), Richard Hale (204.6) vs. Nik Fekete (205.4) and Chris Davis (204.4) vs. Christian M'Pumbu (200.6).

A two-time Mundials champion, Gracie holds a fourth-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He last appeared under the Israel Fighting Championship banner in November, when he returned from a four-year hiatus to submit Martin Wojcik with a first-round rear-naked choke at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv, Israel. Gracie, a bronze medalist at the 2005 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships, has secured four of his five career MMA victories by submission.

Carpenter made his company debut at Bellator 33 in October, when he eked out a split decision over International Fight League alum Jamal Patterson at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. Undefeated in six professional outings, the 30-year-old BJJ black belt trains out of Balance Studios in the City of Brotherly Love. Carpenter’s last three fights have reached the judges.

Bellator 38 will air on MTV2 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Returning to HDNet tonight, Titan Fighting soon will move to monthly shows

Titan Fighting Championships tonight holds its second event, Titan Fighting Championships 17, under the broadcast eye of HDNet.

Based on the success of the first venture, big things are in store.

Titan CEO Joe Kelly today told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that the promotion is planning a move to monthly fight series on the cable channel.

"With the purchase of Strikeforce, this is an exciting time," Kelly said. "There's a big void. It's definitely the right time to have a great time to have a great TV partner and expand your brand."

Titan Fighting Championships 17 takes place at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan. The night's HDNet broadcast kicks off 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT).

Kelly, a former boxing promoter, said his promotion will up its output following a May 27 event, likely Titan Fighting Championships 18, and target several markets outside its longtime Kansas City home.

"(We'll be) doing some stuff in Oklahoma and Louisiana, places like that – places where I've done shows in the past," he said. "It will be fun. Maybe ... the keynote show would be in Philadelphia in (matchmaker) Sam Caplan's hometown."

Moving forward, Titan would love to retain the services of tonight's headliner, Bobby Lashley (5-1), who meets John Ott (8-7). The former WWE wrestler is on the rebound after suffering the first loss of his professional career against Chad Griggs this past August in Strikeforce.

Kelly said Lashley will be a free agent on April 20, when his matching period with the recently acquired Strikeforce ends. But it's unsure what will happen after that.

"Whether he goes back to the WWE or to the UFC or back to Strikeforce, we'll see," he said. "His doors are open. A guy like that, he can do pretty much whatever he wants.

"We'd love to have him back once he gets through that April 20 matching period. If he's available, we'll definitely talk to him again, and we'd love for him to fight for us multiple times moving forward over the next year or so."

The heavyweight has drawn a completely different crowd to tonight's event, Kelly said.

"He's a former WWE champion and he just has a tremendous crossover appeal," he said. "We've got so many people calling the office about tickets. They're just amped up about Bobby fighting, and it's a totally different type of fan. You don't get the savvy MMA fan calling up. These are wrestling fans coming to see Bobby throw those hands. So it will be exciting."

Other bouts slated for tonight include the return of Abe Wagner (8-3), who knocked out Tim Sylvia at Titan Fighting Championships 16. Wagner meets Strikeforce and EliteXC veteran Aaron Rosa (15-3).

"[Rosa's] got a really good chin, so Abe at least in theory won't be able to clip him with the first shot," Kelly said. "It will be a really good slugfest."

Also scheduled to appear is UFC, PRIDE and Strikeforce vet Phil Baroni (13-13), who meets Nick Nolte (3-2) in a welterweight bout.

"He wants to make one last run at this," Kelly said of "The New York Bad Ass." "I think he's got a goal to clean up some of his previous disappointments in Strikeforce and the UFC, and make a run back at the elite level, and it starts here with Nick Nolte."

The full televised card for Titan Fighting Championships 17 includes:
Bobby Lashley vs. John Ott
Abe Wagner vs. Aaron Rosa
Phil Baroni vs. Nick Nolte
Anthony Gutierrez vs. Jon Hollis
James Krause vs. Nathan Schut
Eric Marriott vs. William DaSouza
Aaron Derrow vs. Alonzo Martinez
Chilo Gonzales vs. Travis Sveum

Bellator and WEC vets added to "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley" prelims

The preliminary card for "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley" is beginning to fill out.

Among the new additions to the card are a lightweight matchup between Bellator Fighting Championships veterans Joe Duarte (5-2 MMA, 0-0 SF) and Saad Awad (8-3 MMA, 0-0 SF) and a welterweight up-and-comers Casey Ryan (1-0 MMA, 0-0 SF) vs. Paul Song (2-0 MMA, 0-0 SF).

Additionally, WEC featherweight veteran Rolando Perez (5-4-1 MMA, 0-0 SF) is expected to meet Edgar Cardenas (3-0 MMA, 0-0 SF), according to sources close to the event who today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that contracts are on the way.

"Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley" takes place April 9 at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, and the main card airs live on Showtime. The event is headlined by a welterweight title fight between reigning champ Nick Diaz and Paul Daley.

Duarte returns to action after a loss to Carey Vanier this past April in the quarterfinal round of Bellator's season-two lightweight tournament. He is also known for an appearance on season eight of "The Ultimate Fighter," in which he took on eventual finalist Phillipe Nover and was submitted.

Awad most recently fought this past April and earned a 21-second TKO win over Bryson Kamaka at a King of the Cage event. Prior to that, he served a one-fight stint in Bellator, where he was submitted by Diego Garijo.

Song is undefeated in a pair of professional fights on the regional circuit, and Ryan is fighting pro for the second time in his career after a win in December 2007.

Perez turned a three-fight skid around in his most recent performance when he bested Todd Willingham this past June in a Gladiator Challenge event. He is best known as one of Jose Aldo's first victims in the now-UFC featherweight champ's rise to prominence.

Cardenas, nicknamed "Kitty Katt," is undefeated in three regional appearances since his professional debut this past August.

The latest "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley" card now includes:

MAIN CARD
Champ Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley (for welterweight title)
Champ Gilbert Melendez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri (for lightweight title)
Mike Kyle vs. Gegard Mousasi
Shinya Aoki vs. Lyle Beerbohm
PRELIMINARY CARD
Saad Awad vs. Joe Duarte*
Casey Ryan vs. Paul Song*
Edgar Cardenas vs. Rolando Perez*

UFC Fight Night 24's Michael McDonald: Expectations are premeditated resentments

SEATTLE – For all intents and purposes, UFC bantamweight Michael McDonald (11-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) should be the metaphorical deer in headlights.

Just 20 years old, McDonald makes his UFC debut at Saturday's Spike TV-broadcast UFC Fight Night 24 event. He fights Edwin Figueroa (7-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC), an undefeated, late-replacement foe who brings a completely different style to the cage than his original opponent, Nick Pace.

And yet, if McDonald is worried about anything at all, it's simply that he's not worried one bit.

"I'm a little bit nervous because I'm not nervous at all, if that makes any sense," McDonald told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) in anticipation of his preliminary-card bout, which streams live on Facebook. "With the WEC, there were nerves, but I was in such deep prayer, such deep meditation, that I never thought about it. I was very prepared. For this one, it's actually different.

"I've never been this calm for any fight. I'm feeling really good."

It was just eight months ago that McDonald knocked out Cole Escovedo in rural California to claim Tachi Palace Fights' bantamweight crown. That performance earned a call-up to the WEC, where at November's WEC 53 card, McDonald survived a little early trouble and submitted Clint Godfrey via armbar in less than three minutes.

Just 19 years old at the time of the win, most fighters would be happy simply registering a victory on the big stage. Not so for McDonald, who expects perfection.

"I made some mistakes," McDonald admitted. "A lot of people say I'm too harsh on myself, but I really see a lot of mistakes I made in that fight. He shouldn't have dumped me on my head like that. That was a pretty hard slam, and it hurt me pretty bad. I wasn't really satisfied with the armbar I did. I could have done it better. The technique was off when I did it. I hit with a jab instead of a left hook when I stepped in. I led with my right too much.

"It came out well, but there were still a lot of areas where I could have improved."

Working with the Tom Theofanopoulos-headed Oakdale MMA team in Modesto, Calif., McDonald said he's working diligently to shore up those weaknesses.

"It's an amazing place," McDonald said of his camp. "A lot of people say, 'You can't be at a place where you're at the top.' Honestly, when I'm not on my game, I have amazing teammates, and they kick the crap out of me. We have an amazing group of guys there."

Many MMA pundits believe McDonald has the necessary tools to one day wrap a championship belt around his waist. There are countless hurdles between now and that goal, but McDonald isn't looking past the one directly in front of him. It's a philosophy learned over a fighting career that began in earnest when he was just 14 years old.

"When I was 13 years old, I never though at 14 I would be fighting amateur," McDonald said. "When I was 15 years old, I never though at 16 I would be fighting pro. At 18, I never thought I was going to be 19 years old and in the WEC. It's always just kind of hit me as it hit me.

"I try not to anticipate too much ahead of time. I heard one really great thing by a friend, Mark Phelps. He said, 'Expectations are premeditated resentments.' I kind of try to live by that as much as I can. Live without expectations and let what comes come."

McDonald's supporters believe "Mayday" could be on the verge of an impressive octagon run, beginning with Saturday's event. But if the bantamweight slugger shares in any of the anticipation, he certainly doesn't let it show.

"I attribute that to my faith," McDonald said. "I think that's the main source of my comfort, my peace, my skill, my motivation. I give it all to God, and I think that's where all my strength lies – everything that's allowed me to be here and handle it the way that I have. I truly believe all the glory goes to God in that sense.

"I can honestly that no matter what the outcome, this is just a really cool experience."

Cung Le to Meet With Strikeforce Next Week, Discuss Fighting Future

Cung Le has been less and less visible in the MMA world over recent months. He's fought just twice in the last three years, splitting a pair of memorable matches with Scott Smith.

Le was a building block of Strikeforce's early success, but these days, fans are more likely to ask if he's retired rather than who he might be fighting next. Though we haven't seen him in the cage since a June 2010 win over the aforementioned Smith, he hasn't just been sitting around getting out of shape. In fact, he's been quite busy making movies in both the U.S. and Hong Kong.

Whether or not the 38-year-old returns to compete under the Strikeforce banner remains to be seen, but company CEO Scott Coker told MMA Fighting that he plans to talk to Le in the coming days and find out just what his fighting future holds, or if he has one at all.

"Now that he's back from Hong Kong an China, we're scheduled to talk next week," he said. "If Cung wants to fight, the invitation will be there. Hopefully he'll want to continue because he's an amazing athlete and fighter. He's been one of the pillars of Strikeforce in building this company. I certainly hope he continues to fight."

Le (7-1) currently has three movies in various stages of production: "Dragon Eyes," with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Peter Weller; "The Man with the Iron Fists," with Russell Crowe; and "The Grandmasters," with Ziyi Zhang. In "Dragon Eyes," Le has the starring role in a film overseen by legendary Hollywood producer Joel Silver. It's all part of a booming new career for the flashy kickboxer turned mixed martial artist.

That busy schedule doesn't seem to leave much room for the grind of a 6-to-8 week fight camp, but Coker is hopeful that Le will come back into the fold for at least one more match.

"He's doing very well with the Hong Kong and Chinese film markets, as well as some projects in America," he said. "So it's a scheduling thing. It's going to be something that could happen. He'll have to determine if he wants to, and if he has the time."

God damn Rumble looked sick as hell during that weigh in, dude is gonna die one day from cutting that much. I read a few different reports that he started his cut 8 weeks ago from 231, that's fucking insane. 60lbs in 8 weeks, dude literally cut 1/4 of his bodyweight.

UFC Fight Night was awesome.

The Twister submission was crazy.

Amir Sadollah (Richmond, VA represent!) was great.

Dan Hardy was dominated. He couldn't get anything going except for a few Kimura attempts.

The main event was solid as well.

Overall a strong card, especially for free TV. I enjoyed every fight.

Yeah I was at the event, it was pretty legit. I hope UFC comes back with an even better card.

Hella fighters (not on the card) just walking around the concession area eating popcorn and shit lol.

I'm sure it's typical but there was at least 3-4 pretty good fights in the stands throughout the event too.

Yes Bisping wants to fight Sonnen now after Sonnen called him out. Make this shit happen Joe Silva and Dana White, I want to see these two on TUF. If Bisping was having bitch fits with Jorge's trash talk, Sonnen is gonna have him in a rage all day everyday. I'd fucking love to see Sonnen pound that fag into a bloody mess for 3 rounds.

http://sherdognet.craveonline.com/i...nts-Sonnen-next-Nate-doesn039t-excite-him.php

Bisping wants Sonnen next, Nate doesn't excite him
In an interview with Ariel Helwani on MMAFighting.com Michael Bisping had a few things to say that will interest MMA fans worldwide.

Bisping once again apologised for his actions after the Jorge Rivera fight at UFC 127 where he spat towards the corner of Rivera’s team and gave Rivera a verbal volley demanding an apology for comments made in several pre-fight videos.

Bisping also commented on a potential match-up with the outspoken Chael Sonnen. Bisping said that his manager and he have both told UFC officials that he wants the fight to happen. Now it’s down to UFC officials to make the fight.

Helwani asked Bisping if he would be open to coaching The Ultimate Fighter alongside Sonnen, Bisping was clearly up for it and responded “make it happen”.

Helwani asked Bisping if he'd like to fight Sonnen in London, to his surprise Bisping said that he'd rather fight Sonnen in Vegas on enemy soil.

When asked if a match with Nate Marquardt appealed to him “The Count” said that Marquardt “doesn’t excite me at all”. Bisping said that every time Marquardt gets a main event shot he “sh*ts himself”.
Bisping clearly wants the Sonnen match as he believes Sonnen, ranked number 2 middleweight in the world, is the best fight for him right now.

So we’ll see what happens next in the career of Michael Bisping but you can be sure it’ll be covered by AddictedMMA.com.

yesterday's sunday-morning-rumor-mill was a HUGE faggot.

For those who have heard the rumor that an MMA organization 'suggested' we remove the Sunday Morning Rumor Mill in order to re-instate our press credentials, then you're absolutely correct. Initially, this rumor mill was going to start off with something so incredible, that I would literally need a small village of attorneys just to publish it. There's a point where you have to disregard news that could potentially change the face of an organization solely for the sake of not being 'that guy'. No one wants to be 'that guy', not even me. I'm sure the news will leak soon, but we're definitely not going to be the ones that do so.
