Mauricio "Shogun" Rua: "I'll be back likely in August."

Maurício Shogun Rua is planning to undergo surgery this Saturday, March 8th. He suffered an injury during the training at UFL Academy.
"I'm calm," said Rua. "I have to operate, there is no other way. I hope Chuck waits for me (laughs)"

Asked how he injured the knee, Rua responded, "I did shit. I was hurt helping a friend in the training. He was running and I held him by the waist and forced my knee." Shogun said.

Also, the former PRIDE Champion stated that he is surprised with his substitute, Rashad Evans. Despite Evans stature here in the US and his undefeated status in the octagon, the Brazilian fighter doesn't know who he is.

Rua is confident about his return to the octagon, "I'll be back likely in August."

Brandon Vera Vs. Fabricio Werdum Set For 85

The following is provided courtesy of UFC.com:
Confirmed for the UFC’s third London card in six years is a crucial heavyweight bout between feared Brazilian submission specialist Fabricio Werdum and heavy-handed Brandon “The Truth” Vera.

Werdum - who will be fighting in England for the third time in 14 months - is coming off a stunning come-from-behind victory over former UFC Heavyweight Title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga in Newcastle in January.

“This is an important fight for me, I want the belt and Brandon Vera is in the way,” said the 10-3-1 Werdum. “I have been up against some of the best strikers in MMA and have never been stopped - I am confident I will get the win. I look forward to fighting in London – it is one of my favourite cities and I also have some family there. All the UFC fans in the UK will see a fight to remember.”

Meanwhile, Vera, 8-1, will be looking to regain some of the breakneck upward momentum he lost last October when a severely broken thumb conspired with Tim Sylvia to snap “The Truth’s” unbeaten record. The hard hitting 30-year-old had stopped all four previous UFC opponents including former champ Frank Mir and has vowed to return to the kind of form which made many experts dub him a future UFC champion."

Shooto Confirms 154-Pound Title Fight

Leading Shooto promoter Sustain has announced its biggest card of 2008 thus far, with Shooto Tradition 1: Road to 20th Anniversary set for May 3 at JCB Hall in Tokyo.

Headlining the event will be a rematch for the vacant Shooto world 154-pound title between current Shooto Pacific Rim champion Takashi Nakakura (Pictures) and Ganjo Tentsuku (Pictures).

Nakakura and Tentsuku met in a hotly contested, back-and-forth brawl in October 2006, which ended in a majority draw. Nakakura has gone 3-0 since their first encounter, defeating then-undefeated Mizuto Hirota (Pictures) for the Pacific Rim title in February of last year, submitting Jani Lax (Pictures) in July, and dominating Yusuke Endo (Pictures) to a lopsided decision in November. Tentsuku lost a close decision to Endo in their February 2007 rematch, but rebounded in August with a dominant decision over Mizuto Hirota (Pictures).

The Shooto 154-pound world title has been vacant since Jan. 2007, when then-champion Tatsuya Kawajiri (Pictures) relinquished the title due to a broken thumb which left him unable to defend the crown in the mandatory time period.

Also announced for the card, up-and-coming 123-pounder Ryuichi Miki (Pictures) will take a large step up in competition agaist one of the division's elite, Yasuhiro Urushitani (Pictures).

Miki, the 2006 Shooto rookie champion at 123 pounds, is undefeated in his last seven bouts, and is coming off a dominant display over Kenji Hosoya (Pictures) last month. Conversely, Urushitani is coming off trying times in 2007. In March, Urushitani was handed a split draw in his world title challenge against Shinichi "BJ" Kojima, a fight which he thoroughly dominated. Although he avenged his Dec. 2003 loss to rival and former champion Mamoru Yamaguchi (Pictures) in September, Urushitani was again part of a dubious draw against Guam's Jesse Titano in December.

Shooto icon Rumina Sato (Pictures) has also been announced for the card against a yet-to-be-named opponent. Sato last saw action in September, where he was upset by Hideki Kadowaki (Pictures), who choked out "Shooto's Charisma" in the first round.

The event will be the first ever MMA card at the new JCB Hall. The new hall, whose naming rights have been purchased by Japanese credit card company JCB is part of Meets Port, the new multi-purpose facility in the Tokyo Dome city entertainment complex, which opens on March 19. The hall, which seats approximately 3,000 spectators depending on configuration, is thought to offer a sister venue to nearby Korakuen Hall, which has served as the most important hub for Japanese combat sports since it opened in 1962.

Randy Couture Confirms A Potential Match Against Kurt Angle

According to a report by The Wrestling Observer, current UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture (who is also in a legal battle with the company as well) stated on the Bubba the Love Sponge radio show earlier today that he is trying to get a submission grappling match set up with TNA World Champion Kurt Angle.
Angle has stated in previous interviews that he was hoping to set up a fight with Couture later this year, although he gave the impression it would be an MMA fight and not a "submission grappling rules" match.

Shamrock, Berry Weigh In for Cage Rage

LONDON, March 7 -- A lean Ken Shamrock (Pictures) appeared very calm and confident Friday at the weigh-ins a day before his Cage Rage bout with Sunderland tough guy Robert "Buzz" Berry.

Asked if he was more nervous for his own fight or that of his son, Ryan, the MMA legend said he has not been nervous in the run up to a fight in a long time.

"I get excited when I'm at the arena and I hear the crowd," Shamrock said. "That's when I get excited. As for my son, I've been doing this a long time and I know what it is out there that you have to do and I'm very comfortable that he's going to do just fine. I'm not nervous one way or the other. When I get to the ring, I'm excited and I love to perform. That's why I'm still here."

As for why he moved back into the heavyweight division, Shamrock said that's where his best performances have taken place.

"I'm going in there to win," he said with a stern look. "I didn't come here to lose."

Berry was also in a buoyant mood, showing off his Cage Rage tattoos. He thanked Shamrock for the opportunity to fight him.

"It will be a pleasure to fight you," Berry said. "I'm not nervous one bit. I'm really looking forward to this fight."

Jean Silva (Pictures) also looked ready for his intriguing matchup with Masakazu Imanari (Pictures) in the chief supporting bout.

"I'm very happy to fight in Cage Rage," the Brazilian said. "It's like a second home to me. A fight for me is like a party. I don't care what happens."

Promoter Andy Geer also announced that the next main Cage Rage event would take place May 10 in the massive NEC arena in Birmingham -- an interesting move for the hitherto London-based promotion.

Paul Cahoon (Pictures) is set to headline the event. He'll defend his Cage Rage British light heavyweight title against Ian Freeman (Pictures), who once again comes out of retirement to take part in the long-anticipated bout.

Weigh-in results for Cage Rage 25, which airs tape-delayed Saturday on Showtime at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT:

Robert Berry (Pictures) 240 vs. Ken Shamrock (Pictures) 220
Jean Silva (Pictures) 144 vs. Masakazu Imanari (Pictures) 144
Rob Broughton (Pictures) 282 vs. Neil Grove (Pictures) 273
Pierre Guillet (Pictures) 185 vs. Tom Watson (Pictures) 185
Gary Turner (Pictures) 220 vs. Mustapha al Turk (Pictures) 241
Ivan Serati (Pictures) 200.5 vs. Roman Webber (Pictures) 205

Giorgio Andrews (Pictures) 133 vs. Ryan Shamrock 135

Hackleman: "If we get our way, Anderson Silva is going to come over here..."

On fighting Rashad Evans...

"I honestly think Rashad is a tougher fight. I’d rather fight personally and for Chuck, I’d rather fight Shogun than Rashad. I’m not taking away from Shogun, but I think, since the first time I’ve seen Rashad, I thought he was one of the best 205-pound fighters in the world."

"I don’t think Rashad’s going to stand and bang with Chuck. I just don’t. I think he will use his footwork, speed and try to bring his wrestling into play. I don’t think he’s going to stand and bang with Chuck, but we hope he does (laughing)."

On training for Evans...

"We started camp early because Chuck had some trips. He has to go to England for a publicity tour and then we’re going to come back to training next week so we started a week early."

"The gameplan is not going to change that much; a little bit. It’s business as usual."

On Anderson Silva...

"He’s unbelievable, huh? If we get our way, Anderson Silva is going to come over here and train with us."

On Herring-Kongo...

"I think both of them looked a lot better. Kongo’s ground game looked a lot better. Was that Cecil Peoples that gave the fight to Kongo? That was crazy."

Anyone excited to See Ken Shamrock fighting again?

I know a lot of the Haters and younger MMA fans don't like him and want him to quit.

He's a legend and if he says he still can fight, I'll watch it.

What I really want is to fight agian, no matter if it is in the GP or a normal fight of the event, "he said.

Fuck you to any who say it was a work" - Josh Barnett

Fuck you to any who say it was a work. That's disrespectful to me and Yoshida but to the fans at the show as well. I had to beat my friend up, nearly tear out both his ankles, hurt his knee and mess hi face up. Don't fucking shit on what we went through.

There were no agreements prior either. No pulled punches.

I talked in the match. So what? Is that against the rules? I was in dominant position and it isn't the first time I have done so. I have been at this longer than almost anyone now so I think I have the experience to do something like that and not get my skull caved in.

But Buzz Berry isn't Tito Ortiz.

As long as Ken fights Bums & Old guys he has a good chance of winning.

I'll like to see Ken Shamrock vs Bas Rutton, Tank Abbott, Don Frye again, etc.

UFC PRESIDENT NOT CLOSING THE DOOR ON TITO

With only one fight left on his current contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz is stepping back into the Octagon, quite possibly for the last time, to face rising 205-pound contender Lyoto Machida at UFC 84 in Las Vegas.

While Ortiz has been very vocal about his displeasure with the match-up and his overall dealings with the UFC, president Dana White says that his focus needs to be on his opponent for the May 24 bout.

“It’s a tough fight for Tito. Tito really hasn’t had a significant fight or a significant win in the last couple years,” said White in an interview with MMAWeekly.com. “This is his first real big fight in a long time. Tito’s out there saying, ‘this fight isn’t with me and Lyoto, it’s with me and Dana.’ No idiot, it’s with Lyoto Machida. You’re not fighting me. You better be training, you better be doing what you’re supposed to be doing.”

Ortiz has publicly stated that he has no intentions of returning to the UFC after fulfilling his contract with the Machida fight.

“He said he’ll never come back to the UFC as long as I’m running it,” White stated. “Tito’s always going to say stupid (expletive). Every time that guy opens his mouth, dumb (expletive) rolls out, he can’t help himself.

“And he’s a liar. I don’t know if you guys heard his Howard Stern interview where he says all he makes is $250,000. Tito Ortiz has made millions of dollars. Remember, when he was in that thing crying, ‘I crashed my car into a tree, my life was over.’ We brought him back into the UFC, we made him a coach of The Ultimate Fighter, and since then Tito Ortiz has made millions and millions of dollars.”

Despite Ortiz’s declarations that he will not return as long as White is running things – the UFC president isn’t going anywhere – but still feels the book isn’t closed on future dealings with the disgruntled fighter.

“I’m not planning on quitting because Tito doesn’t want to fight if I’m here,” said White. “Even with all the issues I’ve had with that moron, he’s still in the UFC, so we’ll see what happens.”

No word from Ortiz if he plans on even negotiating with the UFC once the fight with Machida is over, but his early indications are that he will shop the free agent market.

JOSH KOSCHECK WANTS TO GET A UFC TITLE SHOT

Following his UFC 82 victory over Dustin Hazelett, Josh Koscheck became a free agent; but the Top Ten ranked welterweight expects to re-sign with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and work his way into title contention.

"I'm pretty sure I'm going to be with the UFC," said The Ultimate Fighter season one alumnus. "I know my manager and the UFC are in talks right now, so that's up to them. If the UFC wants me, I want to be in the UFC. For me, it's my home. I started my career there and hopefully I'll end my career there. It's the place to be right now, and it's a good time to be a UFC fighter.

"I let my management do all of that. My job is to train. My job is to fight. Their job is to represent me."

The fight with Hazelett was his tenth fight in the UFC. Expecting to re-sign, Koscheck is focused on putting himself in a position to get a shot at the welterweight title.

"I honestly don't care who I fight. I want the fight to make sense in order for me to get back to getting a title shot. If I can get a good three wins in a row, hopefully I can be a contender again and get a chance to fight for that title and get that belt," he told MMAWeekly.com.

"That's the ultimate goal is to get that UFC title and that's like the Super Bowl right now... That's the belt to have right now and that's the belt I want."

Koscheck may not care whom he fights, but Diego Sanchez has made it known that he'd like a rematch with the American Kickboxing Academy-trained fighter. Asked about Sanchez, Koscheck said, "I think when you lose a fight, you want it really bad. It took me two years to get a rematch with Diego, so what makes him think he wins one fight and he can step right up and get a rematch?

"I think I'm in his head,” he continued. “He's only been thinking and focusing about me for the last year. It's actually kind of nice. He's in the same shoes I was after The Ultimate Fighter. For two straight years I woke up every morning hating Diego Sanchez.

"If it makes sense and the UFC wants it and the fans want it, I'll do it, but he's going to be pissed off after the fight again because he's going to have another two years to set back and pout and cry because I'm going to kick his ass."

Since Koscheck’s emergence in mixed martial arts, wrestling enthusiasts have been chomping at the bit to see Koscheck vs. Matt Hughes and it's a fight he would relish.

"Matt Hughes, he's been a great champion. I don't have anything against him. I'm definitely going to try to hype the fight up as much as possible if we could get it, but I don't know if he wants to fight me. I think he wants to fight Matt Serra and retire, but if he's willing to step up, I'll sign that contract tomorrow," said the 29-year-old fighter.

Training out of AKA in San Jose, Calif., Koscheck’s teammates include two other top contenders in the UFC welterweight division in Jon Fitch and Mike Swick. Questioned if he'd ever consider fighting a teammate, Koscheck responded, "Money talks brother. Money talks, and I can guarantee you Jon Fitch would say the same thing.

"Unless it makes good sense, we have a good atmosphere. We're good friends. I think unless it makes sense, it's going to be very hard to get us to fight at this point in our careers."

He continued, "Now if me, Jon Fitch and Mike Swick clean out the whole division like Anderson Silva did, then what else is there for us to do? We've got to fight each other and we would know that. It would be a mutual agreement that this is how it's going to work and we fight each other.

"Right now, there's probably not any sense for us to talk about it because there's a lot of guys in that welterweight division that still need their butt's kicked and the AKA boys are probably going to have to do that."

NEW IFL CHAMP RYAN McGIVERN TALKS TITLE WIN

Twice Miletich Martial Arts middleweight Ryan McGivern has been an underdog to Matt Horwich of Team Quest in an International Fight League bout, and twice McGivern has come away the victor.

But what made his second win over Horwich at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas so special, was the fact that now, because of his win, McGivern is the new IFL middleweight champion.

After years of hard work and being one of the most dependable fighters on the IFL’s roster since its inception in 2006, McGivern had never failed to miss a fight, and win or lose, he always brought his absolute best to the table.

When active duty in the military called up Horwich’s originally scheduled opponent, Tim Kennedy, McGivern was finally rewarded for his efforts, and after five grueling rounds, emerged victorious via unanimous decision.

“Going in there I knew it was going to be a battle and that’s what it exactly turned out to be,” he told MMAWeekly.com. “All I can remember is all the times he was punching and kicking me, and where I almost got my arm ripped off in the second round, and so when it was over I wasn’t really sure what the judges were going to say or which way it was going to go.

“After watching it, hearing the commentating and kind of seeing things from a different perspective, I’m pretty happy with the outcome. I’m happy with the judges’ decision.”

As McGivern points out, their earlier match-up really couldn’t predict the outcome of the second fight, even though McGivern won again, because both fighters have improved so much in their respective stand-up games.

“Matt’s getting more comfortable using his skills on his feet, with his punches and kicks,” he explained. “People say he’s very unorthodox, but he uses it to his advantage.

“Each fight that I’ve had I’ve gotten more and more comfortable on my feet, using my hands. I expected this fight to be more on the feet, and it was.”

After pulling off the unanimous decision victory and winning the IFL 185-pound title, one would think that McGivern let loose and lived it up, but not so says the humble Iowan.

“I think a lot of it hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said. “It is definitely extremely exciting to win the title, and the other stuff that goes with it, headlining or being a main event or what have you, but with every fight after this I’m going to keep the same mentality as far as just being ready for the next fight.

“I definitely realize and understand now that I have a target on my back, so it motivates me to push it that much harder and get past my comfort level.”

Now that he is the champion, McGivern was asked who he thinks the IFL will have him fight in his first title defense, to which Ryan replied, “As I’ve said I’m always kind of the fighter that’s out of the loop, so I’m not sure what’s going on.

“But if possibly the next fight would be (Tim) Kennedy that would be cool. I just want to make sure that I’m ready to go. Whoever it is across the way, all I can do is be as ready as I can be and go out and there and do what I’ve trained to do.”

Thus begins a new chapter in the career of Ryan McGivern. He’s won a title and now he has to defend it. And he assures fans that not only will he be up to the task, but the remainder of the Miletich Martial Arts fighters in the IFL will do so as well.

“I want to say a big thank you to Tapout, who were my main sponsors for this fight; and Cytosport Muscle Milk,” he finished. “As always a huge thanks to my teammates and coaches, my family and friends, and especially my wife, Susan.

“Tune in because there’s going to be some great fights. I know all the guys in our camp are working their butts off; they’re ready to throw some big hands and get in there and mix it up. I’m going to try to be in the best shape possible so I can go out there and go hard every time and put on an exciting fight.”

Wand shocked about Pele

Support for friends. That is how Wanderlei Silva titled his latest post to fans on his official blog. “This week I received two pieces of very sad news, regarding the injuries of two good friends of mine: [Mauricio] Shogun and [Jose] Pele. I saw the video of Pele’s injury and was very worried, as the break seems to be very big, I wish him the best at this time. As a fighter I admire him a lot. Even though his recent results have not been good he is one of the toughest guys I’ve seen in MMA. Good luck to Pele, don’t give up! Never!” wrote the fighter, who has a fight scheduled against Keith Jardine. If he wins, the UFC’s head men want to promote a revenge match between Silva and Chuck Liddell this year, in December.

Wand also spoke of Shogun’s injury, on the same knee brother Ninja recently operated: “As for Shogun, I was very bothered by this injury, I think his desire to win was such that he his knee ligament could not withstand the pressure. Now it is time to do what needs to be done and enjoy your family, and you wish to visit your friend in Las Vegas, I’m waiting! I’m certain you would have destroyed Liddell, I know that more than anyone! Don’t worry more than you need to, it doesn’t help, these things take time… I know you are one of the top guys in the category and will show that soon, I admire you a lot, I know what you are capable of. Good luck.”
