“We packed the Voodoo Lounge this past October, proving that Kansas City is a rising market for MMA,” M-1 Global live events president Joe Kelly was quoted as saying in a press release issued by M-1 Global this afternoon. “It truly was one of the most-attended events in M-1 history. But now with the lure of a total of fifteen M-1 Challenge fights, we felt we needed to book an even larger venue. Tickets sales have been very strong and we’re looking forward to another big show.

Fabrício Camões eyes Strikeforce belt

Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Royler Gracie, Fabrício “Morango” Camões debuted with a victory at Strikeforce, last Friday (15), at Fresno, California. The Super Challenge champion faced Torrance Taylor and showed a great Jiu-Jitsu, submitting the American fighter with a rear naked choke on the first round. “I’m going after this belt, that what my goal at EliteXC until is shuts the doors”, said the Brazilian, who won his sixth fight in a row, the last four on the first round.

Report: Omigawa vs. Sandro, Hioki vs. Kanehara at Sengoku in August

A new report from Tatame.com indicates World Victory Road's Sengoku featherweight grand prix semifinals have been set.

Marlon Sandro (14-0) revealed to the website that he will be facing Michihiro Omigawa (6-7-1). By default, Hatsu Hioki (19-3-2) would then face Masanori Kanehara (13-5-5).

The event takes place Aug. 2 in Japan, though the organization has yet to announce an official venue.

Hioki has gone eight-straight bouts without a loss, including first-round submission wins over Ronnie Mann and the previously undefeated Chris Manuel in the opening two rounds of the tournament.

Kanehara has advanced to the semifinals with a pair of unanimous-decision wins over previously undefeated Chan Sung Jung and Jung's Korean countryman Jong Man Kim.

Sandro, an undefeated Nova Uniao fighter, stopped previously undefeated Nick Denis in just 19 seconds in May. The Brazilian also stopped Matt Jaggers with a standing arm-triangle choke in March's opening round.

The surprising Omigawa earned his way into the semifinals with victories over Nam Phan and L.C. Davis. The back-to-back wins were Omigawa's first two victories since an April 2007 victory preceded a four-fight winless streak.

Sengoku lightweight champion Satoru Kitaoka (24-8-9), who defeated Takanori Gomi in January to clam the organization's vacant belt, has also been officially announced for the event. Kitaoka's opponent has not yet been announced.

Gesias Cavalcante Interview

One of the best lightweight fighters of the world, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante is ready for his return to the rings. Thirst for fight, the American Top Team representative is scheduled to fight Tatsuya Kawajiri in the Dream 9, on May 26, Japan. Without stopping the trainings, Gesias talked with TATAME.com and guaranteed: is ready to return with victory. Check below the exclusive interview with the fighter, who also commented about Shynia Aoki’s loss to Hayato Sakurai at Dream welterweight tournament, Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro’s return at Dream, the title fight between his team mate Thiago Alves and Georges St. Pierre and much more.

How are the trainings to your return to the rings?
I'm crazy to fight. Actually, I'm not considering my return at the trainings, because I’m like I would be if I’d fight at the end of the year. I trained to fight, but the opponent was injured and the fight didn’t happen. Then, I was supposed to fight in April and, two weeks before, they told me that it would be better for me to fight at the end of May. So, I'm training hard, in a good rhythm. It just needs to put me up at the ring.

What do you know about Tatsuya Kawajiri?
He’s a very complete guy, has a good game standing, good wrestling, does a good ground game. He’s a guy that I respect a long time, since the time of Shotoo, then in Pride, is a career that I follow for a long time, I always liked his style. Even before he was fighting professionally, I already liked his style. For me, it will be an honor to fight with this guy that I follow since I was a kid, and today I'm doing front with them, so that he challenged me. He has a good cross from the right on top, strikes well, has a good Boxing and Wrestling. I can't say that I’m going to do this or that, I’ll go there and do my own, training the maximum tools as possible so that when I get to the ring I don’t get surprised with anything.

How is the preparation? Will you keep the fight standing or take him to the ground?

At first I’ll fell standing and, as the fight goes, I’ll take to the ground. Is like I said, it’s a difficult fight to predict and difficult to guess, because of the game of the two. There are fights that he just strikes, others that he wants to do ground, so he’s a little unpredictable. But I'm going with the full game, to make everything a little.

How do you face this return and, winning, being possible to have a chance for the Dream belt?
For me is great, the expectation I have is this: the time that I was stopped was the time I had to evolve. Definitely, I want to show everything that I’m training here at the academy, all that I came through with ATT, which, for me, is the best team in the world. Has other teams, but we have done a good job, even for the amount of top athletes and belt disputes we have had. I can only thank the strength that the guys give me, the Parrumpinha, who is my teacher of Jiu-Jitsu, always accompanies me and is always with me at the fights, my coaches of Muay Thai, Libório, Conan and Darrel. This are only the top coaches, just to give that confidence that I'm improving and I have how to evolve, not being stopped, or stalled. The expectation to return now is the best, then go for the belt, with whoever.

Do you want to face Aoki again?
I will be quite honest, my desire is to fight with anyone with the belt. I have a history with Aoki, but I also have a bad resolved history with Hansen, that was a fight that we had long ago, at the beginning of my career, which I lost in a dubious decision. So, I never stayed running after Hansen, wanting to fight with him again, nothing. I just want to fight with who is doing well there, I want to fight with who is in focus, which is the possibility that I have to always be with the belt, always showing myself and beating myself, expanding my limits. Would be the case to be fighting against both. Thank God the two guys who I’ve lost are the two which today are at the top, disputing the belt, and whoever it is, is good for me, I’m well settled with these things.

What did you think of his fight in the Dream’s welterweight GP? Were you surprised with the result?
I wasn’t surprised, because Sakurai is an athlete who is on the road too long, already went through good and bad phases. Sometimes he fights very well, others not so good, but he’s a very tough athlete, further in weight 77kg. He is a strong guy, I’m not surprised at all. Aoki had his chance, of course, formerly he fought in the Shooto’s category, he fought well, was champion. It isn’t a surprise, even because the physical quality of Aoki isn’t the strength, but is flexibility, the game, being able to do many positions that the opponent isn’t used to see. I saw possibilities for him to win too, but it isn’t a surprise that Sakurai have won the way he won.

What’s your bet to the final phase of the welterweight GP?
I'm betting on Galvão’s new blood, who arrived showing service. I had also seen his other fight, before that in the Dream, and I had liked. He had taken a knockdown, recovered in the fight, was well. He is showing that he’s doing the right job.

What did you think of Shaolin’s return?
Thanks God, he is a guy who was also stopped for a long time, wasn’t well physically, went through injury, so I know the anxiety he was. As a fighter, I can say, I don’t want anyone to be stopped a long time because of injury. For those who love the sport, it is very complicated. I’m glad that he is back and winning, is good because the category is always moving. He is an top athlete too, so I’m happy for him to be back in the tops.

Many fans want you to go to UFC. Why didn’t this happen yet?
First, I always had the contract with K-1, which joined with the Dream, and the guys are treating me well. I always have fights, so I couldn’t try to negotiate with anyone else, with any other event. Some times people commented about it, but no one came to an agreement, then I didn’t get involved. I leave these things in Dan Lambert’s hand, my manager, he takes care of this bureaucracy things. I have a job and he has another. If one day appear an opportunity and everything is beneficial... But, today still has much top athlete in Japan, so I think I still have much to do there. If one day appears the opportunity to come here, if is natural, it will happen, I leave in the hands of God.

What are your bets to Thiago Pitbull’s fight against GSP?
He takes the belt, I have no doubt. The team, anyone who sees the guy training, his dedication and desire, already gives as almost certain. He just needs to follow the line that he’s going, making it simple. It will be simple. Of course that Saint Pierre is a top fighter, certainly he’s in the top 10 pound for pound, he’s an excellent athlete. But, because of the game, also in the physical quality, Pitbull has much to complicate GSP, and we’re exploring this. It will have a Camp for the training, will be almost all guys. At that time, he will be the only one fighting, so everyone will be together for him. So it won’t be only Pitbull against St. Pierre, it will be the American Top Team against St. Pierre... The team here is a family, we all work together and helping each other. Everyone here has its value. Pitbull is damn strong, has a heavy hand, a heavy kick. Saint Pierre wasn’t always very strong in striking, as we saw in the fight against Matt Serra. Pitbull is a guy who always takes the opportunity.

Arlovski-Rogers Added to Strikeforce

Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers will meet in a featured bout for Strikeforce “Lawler vs. Shields” on June 6 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

Strikeforce Director of Public Relations Mike Afromowitz confirmed the heavyweight matchup to Sherdog.com Tuesday.

Arlovski (15-6), 30, was knocked out by No. 1 world-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction “Day of Reckoning” in January, but acquitted himself well in the bout’s opening moments.

The defeat snapped a five-fight win streak for Sherdog.com’s No. 2-ranked Arlovski, which included crushing TK0 victories over former IFL standouts Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson, as well as UFC heavyweight Fabricio Werdum.

Rogers (9-0) made his promotional debut on April 11, stopping Ron Humphrey with second-round knees. The Minneapolis native will carry a 30-pound advantage over Arlovski in the bout.

Arlovski had been previously announced to make his professional boxing debut on June 27 in Los Angeles for Golden Boy Promotions, which has a promotional relationship with Affliction Entertainment. Arlovski also has a single fight left on a three-bout contract with Affliction.

Arlovski’s management could not be initially reached for comment.

The June 6 event will be headlined by a middleweight matchup between former EliteXC 185-pound champ Robbie Lawler and 170-pound kingpin Jake Shields.

Strikeforce “Shields vs. Lawler” airs live on Showtime at 10 p.m. EST.

Germany won't allow fans 17 and younger to attend UFC 99 in June

MMA fans 17 and younger won't be permitted to attend UFC 99 in Germany.

After a rash of bad publicity, including a negative front-page article in one of the country's largest newspapers, the UFC was forced to agree to a ban on minors attending the June 13 event, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The UFC event, Germany's first, takes place at Lanxess Arena and airs on pay per view.

Featured bouts for the show include Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva (at a catch-weight of 195 pounds) and heavyweights Heath Herring vs. Cain Velasquez.

According to the Yahoo! Sports report, the negative publicity has included the use of incorrect information about the UFC, including the outdated belief that the UFC bans only biting and eye-poking. (In fact, the UFC has used the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, which ban many potentially dangerous moves and holds, since 2000.)

Calls to ban the event outright began soon after the UFC announced its intentions of making its German debut. Minors were recently banned from the show after a local child protection commission pushed for it.

Anthony Johnson out of The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale with knee injury

An injured knee has forced Anthony Johnson out of June 20 fight with Matt Brown.

The bout was scheduled for the televised main card of The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale, which airs on Spike TV.

Johnson released the news with a recent MySpace bulletin, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) confirmed the injury with a source close to the fighter.

However, the UFC has yet to announce the injury, and as of Tuesday morning, it was still listed on the UFC.com Events page.

The UFC has a full month to find a replacement, though the bout could be scrapped from the already-loaded fight card, which takes place at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort. The televised slot could be fill be an already announced preliminary bout between veteran Chris Lytle and Kevin Burns or a rumored bout between Melvin Guillard and Gleison Tibau.

Johnson gave no time table for his return. The welterweight fighter was going for his third consecutive win following a knockout of Kevin Burns in December and a TKO win over Luigi Fioravanti in February.

Brown, meanwhile, is looking for his fourth win in five UFC fights. He most recently scored a brutal first-round TKO of Pete Sell at UFC 96 in March.

The latest card now includes:

"THE GOAT" GOES RELUCTANTLY TO 185

Six months ago, Nick “The Goat” Thompson thought he was a fighter with a law degree. But when fights stopped coming in the last half of 2008, he wondered if he was the opposite.

“I’ve got this $100,000 degree, I’ve been paying on that, and I can’t find any fights,” said Thompson. “It doesn’t really matter how good you are if you can’t find fights. The law was looking a lot more attractive an option.”

An existing deal with Sengoku didn’t bring work. He scraped together two fights in January and February, at a pay cut, before his EliteXC contract was purchased by Strikeforce. A variety of options were on the table, but none came to fruition.

So, he kept looking. Bellator was interested, but wouldn’t get in the way of Strikeforce. His quote was too high for most regional shows.

He went back to Strikeforce and asked again. They came back with an option, maybe the only option: fight Tim Kennedy as a middleweight at Strikeforce Challengers Series on June 19 in Kent, Wash.

“Yeah, it wasn’t very good,” Thompson said of his time at 185. “It’s been a while. I fought there my first 20 or 30 fights, but I’m not a 185-pound fighter. I think more than anything (Strikeforce matchmaker) Bob Cook just wanted to give me a fight because he understood that I was upset. I’ll take it for what it is. I’m not happy that I don’t have the choice to fight at 170.”

Thompson is currently ranked ninth in MMAWeekly’s welterweight rankings.

“I’ve never had this problem in five years and 50 fights,” he said. “I think I’m an exciting fighter. Maybe it’s just one of those things that happens to every fighter at one point.”

His deal with Strikeforce expires in July, and his Sengoku deal may end a month later, at which point he will re-assess his position. Strikeforce has yet to announce his middleweight match-up.

A Sengoku welterweight tournament is expected for the fall, so work might be found there.

“I don’t know if I’ll stay with them as well,” he said. “Maybe (I’ll talk) to the UFC. My wife’s pregnant, so it’s not really a good time for me not to be fighting.”

As for his other career option, he’ll resist it as long as possible.

“I like law, but I can always be a 40-year-old attorney,” he said. “I can’t be a 40-year-old fighter. Up until now I was providing for my family and doing something I love – what could be better than that? But this last couple of months, I’ve had to rethink that.”

Kennedy, an IFL and HDNet Fights veteran, is what he calls a “true 185’er,” so he’s getting ready to push around a lot more weight.

“Beggars can’t be choosers,” he said “I’ll do my best. I have no excuse; I just have to get ready. I’m glad they gave me the fight. I’ll do that and see what comes next.”

SERRA BELIEVES HUGHES IS OVERLOOKING HIM

It's been almost 2 years in the making, but at UFC 98 Matt Serra will finally get his chance to take on Matt Hughes in a grudge match for the ages. The war of words between the two welterweights goes back even further, but on May 23 they will finally get to settle the score.

Many fans ask the question of what brought about the feud between Serra and Hughes, and to hear the New York native talk about it, all you'd have to do is drop a few dollars and rent a few seasons of "The Ultimate Fighter."

"Rent season 2 of "The Ultimate Fighter" then go to season 4, make it halfway through season 6 without calling the guy a douche and I'll tell you right now I owe you an apology. I'm just not a big fan," Serra told MMAWeekly Radio recently about his history with Hughes. "We used to be cool back in the day, but success, just like anything else, gets to people. They can either be grateful and be thankful and stay grounded, or they can get stuck up and think who they are. He's that guy."

"He thinks he's above people, that's just the way I see it."

The former welterweight champion believes that Hughes will also carry that attitude into the fight at UFC 98, and he plans on making the Illinois native pay for any mistakes he might make on fight night.

"I know he doesn't put me on his level," Serra commented. "That's going to come into play, and he's going to realize 'just because I'm a bigger wrestler, I'm a bigger guy, maybe a better wrestler and I can bench press more' there's more to it, you know?"

Admitting that his opponent does bring many dangerous weapons into the fight, Serra says it's the lack of respect coming his way that will be Hughes undoing.

"No matter what I think of Matt Hughes, I obviously think he's a dangerous guy, and I respect his skills and what he's accomplished, even though I don't like him that much as a person at all," said Serra. "The biggest thing for him in this fight is going to be ego. He doesn't think I belong in the same arena, let alone the same cage as him. That's the difference, I'm expecting a hard fight, and I don't think he is."

The interviews leading into this grudge match have been plentiful, but Serra laughs at some of the comments his opponent has made, and he's ready to make him pay for it when the step into the Octagon.

"I saw an interview for the promos saying that he's going to see me there, and I'm going to look across the cage, and I don't know, second guess taking the fight. He must be smoking crack on that farm of his. Look at the list of guys I've fought. I don't (expletive) my pants over anyone, I don't give a (expletive) who it is," Serra stated.

Working at his gym as well as traveling back to Renzo Gracie's school in Manhattan, along with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace John Danaher, and stand-up coach Ray Longo, Serra believes he is more prepared for this fight than ever before.

"I couldn’t feel better. I feel the best I've felt in a long time, I'm rearing to go," said Serra. "I'm healthy, my back felt like there was nothing ever wrong with it. I'm seriously putting 110% into this fight, and we'll see how it works out. I feel really good about it."

The New Yorker has no problem letting Matt Hughes know how he feels going into the fight, but he's also ready to unleash all the training and hard work he's put forth, come Saturday night.

"I'm ready to give three five's of hell," Serra said. "I'm not over analyzing anything, I'm not getting crazy or getting caught up in anything, it's another fight, just a guy I really don't want to lose to."

Matt Serra will face Matt Hughes in the co-main event of UFC 98 on Saturday night, May 23.

Michael Bisping eager to pick up a few ‘new tricks’ from Frank Mir prior to UFC 100

“When Rampage fought Wanderlei in December he used Frank Mir’s gym. Anthony [McGann] the manager of Wolfslair is friendly with Frank, so seeing as he’s fighting on the card I thought it could be a possibility…. I’ve got to make sure I’m as fit as I possibly can be — that’s a given, I always try to be in top condition. Obviously I’ve got to work my defense against Greco-Roman wrestling, and avoiding Dan’s big right hand which he likes to follow up with the clinch — to try to land that big shot and follow it up with a take down. And same as always, I always try and improve my all-round game and go in as a better and improved fighter than I did last time. I definitely feel I’ve improved as a fighter since I fought Leben. I’ve definitely got some new tricks up my sleeves and I’ll be looking at using them when we fight.”

Promotions and the Use of Exclusive Fighter Agreements in MMA

Promotions use exclusive fighter agreements to carefully and comprehensively describe the rights and responsibilities of fighters under contract with the organization. Generally, these exclusive agreements address key business conditions a promotion wishes to clearly define in the event the conditions are not met. Promotions are big businesses and the sophistication of their business agreements reflect this reality. MMA business is no longer based on a handshake. In fact, in many instances, the exclusive fighter agreement is just one of several a promotion will use. Bout agreements and standard fighter contracts governed by state athletic commissions and/or other governing bodies are also used to strictly define the roles of the parties, the term of the business agreement, the scope of the deal (which can be very broad) and the consequences for breach. Following are just some of the key provisions one could expect to find in an exclusive fighter agreement:

Promotion’s Business Purpose: Exclusive Fighter Agreements usually contain a broad provision defining the promotion’s business purpose. A fight promotion’s stated business objectives are very broad. A well-drafted agreement will provide that the promotion is in business to (1) produce and promote MMA events; (2) to reap the benefits of the live and recorded broadcast of such events through all forms of media; and (3) to monetize the manufacture and distribution of products relating to the produced and promoted events.

Exclusivity: Of course, one of the main purposes of exclusive fighter agreements is to bind a fighter to an exclusive relationship with the organization for specified time period. This exclusive relationship may also include reference to a minimum number of fights during the contract term. This exclusivity is typically world-wide. However, the agreements provide a number of termination provisions allowing the promotion to terminate the exclusive relationship under certain circumstances. Such circumstances could include losses, medical suspensions, and/or failed drug tests. There may also be provisions allowing the contract to be extended, if, for example, a fighter earns a title or wins a belt with the promotion during the initial contract term. In exchange for agreeing to fight exclusively for one fight promotion, fighters are typically compensated through appearance and rights fees associated with the fighter’s participation in fights during the term of the agreement. Such fees are exclusive of fighter prize money which is negotiated and set forth in a separate, signed agreement between the parties.

Fighter Expenses: When a fighter signs an exclusive agreement with a promotion, he or she can typically be assured that the promotion will cover certain fight-related expenses. Travel, hotel accommodations and per diem meal allowances may be provided for the fighter and one or more of the fighter’s cornermen.

Medical Requirements: In order to be allowed to fight at a particular event, promotions requires written medical releases by licensed physicians who have examined the fighter indicating the fighter is cleared to fight. There may also be a provision requiring the fighter to be physically and medically fit and drug free.

Insurance: As required by law in certain jurisdictions, promotions will insure signed fighters as participants in a particular bout for appropriate health and accidental death insurance, subject to the availability of insurance. This insurance coverage is generally narrow and promotions typically take care to expressly explain that fighters are personally responsible for there own medical expenses during the term of the agreement. Commonly, provided insurance is strictly limited to coverage of the fighter during the actual event.

Doping and Illegal Substances: These agreements may contain provisions requiring the fighter to be tested for doping, including but not limited to steroids, human growth drugs or any form of prohibited performance enhancing substances or illegal substances. These anti-doping provisions typically track state athletic commission rules and/or other governing body rules and regulations. Penalties for positive drug tests may include financial penalties, disqualifications and/or title/belt forfeiture.

Medical Testing: In addition to drug testing, fighters may be required to submit other medical test results. These tests will typically include HIV tests, Hepatitis B and C tests, neurological tests (if required), CT scan and MRI tests (if required) and any other tests required by the State Athletic Commission and/or state governing bodies.

Grant of Rights and Licenses: Perhaps more importantly, exclusive fighter agreements may require the fighter to grant the promotion a perpetual right to utilize the fighter’s persona for use in connection with the event. The “fighter’s persona” may be broadly defined in the agreement as the fighter’s names (legal, formal, informal) the fighter’s likeness, autograph signature, and voice. Some agreements will carve out the fighter’s right to apply for an maintain a trademark for his name and/or nickname for merchandise and/or related services.

The contract provisions discussed above are a composite of provisions either personally reviewed by the author or described to the author by others with personal knowledge of exclusive fighter agreements that have been used in MMA by a number of promotions.

Chuck Liddell possible for UFC Hall of Fame in July

Although he has yet to decide whether or not he is going to retire, Chuck Liddell could very likely be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in July at their historic UFC 100 event.

In an interview with Fighter’s Only Magazine, UFC President Dana White hinted at the very real possibility of Liddell being one of the two new members going into the UFC’s Hall of Fame.

White would only give a maybe and a possibly when pressed for a more definitive answer. He went on to say he was waiting to see what they were going to do with Liddell and how they were going to do it. White had made an a previous announcement stating that there would be two new inductees at UFC 100 and ever since then rumors have been flying as to who those individuals would be.

Many people have made the case for former middleweight champion the late great Evan Tanner who perished in a California desert last September. Tanner battled through his personal demons and primarily taught himself the skills that would make him a champion and endear him to fans all across the world. Tanner came back from a hiatus in March of 2008 but lost to Yushin Okami in his first fight in almost two years. Three months later Tanner fought a much younger and bigger opponent in Kendall Grove to a split decision in what would be his last hurrah in the octagon. Overall he was 32-8 with victories over Paul Buentello, Heath Herring, Phil Baroni (2), Robbie Lawler and David Terrell.

Charles”Mask” Lewis who was the charismatic founder of the TapouT clothing line that has become synonymous with mixed martial arts is also widely believed to be a favorite for induction. Lewis had a smile that could light up any room that he walked into and gave support to fighters who a lot of other companies would not even consider getting involved with. He always said that he wasn’t concerned with wins or losses but rather the effort that a fighter gave. His tragic death on a California road in March was felt throughout the entire MMA community and his presence cage side will certainly be missed for a long time to come.

Another UFC legend thought to be under consideration is long time welterweight champion Matt Hughes who will take on Matt Serra this Saturday at UFC 98. Hughes who is an incredible 13-4 inside the octagon and has had two separate reigns as the welterweight champion has long been a favorite of Dana White. He has defeated such stars as Georges St. Pierre, B.J. Penn, Frank Trigg (2), Sean Sherk, Royce Gracie, Carlos Newton (2), Dave Menne and Hayato “Mach” Sakurai. If Hughes does retire after his bout with Serra it would make a lot of sense to see him inducted in July.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Godfather Helio Gracie who recently passed away has been talked about as a possible candidate. The father of UFC legend and Hall of Famer Royce Gracie would be an excellent choice for induction. Whomever is bestowed with the honor of being an entrant into the Hall of Fame will certainly be deserving and will join a select group of fighters that include Ken Shamrock, Randy Couture, Dan Severn, Mark Coleman, and Royce Gracie.

Sources: Tim Kennedy negotiating with Strikeforce

Elite Army special forces member Tim Kennedy could be on the verge of resuming his fighting career with the Strikeforce promotion, FiveOuncesOfPain.com has learned.

Five Ounces of Pain learned of the news from sources within the industry late last week. The news has yet to be confirmed by officials with Strikeforce or representatives of Kennedy. His debut could take place during a Strikeforce Challengers event on Friday, June 19.

If a deal can be finalized, Strikeforce will have landed a coveted free agent that several other major promotions, including the UFC, have been pursuing.

Kennedy, 9-2, has not competed since a first round knockout of Elias Rivera during the now-defunct IFL’s World Grand Prix finals on Dec. 29, 2007. The two-plus year hiatus was due to the fact that Kennedy has remained an active member of the United States Army while pursuing his fighting career. He was deployed overseas early last year and did not return until this past December.

During an exclusive interview with FiveOuncesOfPain.com this past January, Kennedy revealed that he had been injured in an IED (improvised explosive device) attack prior to finishing his deployment.

“I got a little bit of shrapnel wounds; some to my face and some to my arm,” Kennedy said. “And then when I was trying to pick a guy up who was a part of the explosion, I didn’t permanently injure anything in my biceps but my adrenaline was going and his body was kind of heavy. As far as recovery, I am 100 percent.”
Since returning to the States, Kennedy has intensified his training in preparation for his return to MMA.

Limited to being a part-time fighter for the majority of his eight-year pro MMA career, it is expected that Kennedy will now be allowed to fight full-time while still remaining an active member of the United States Armed Forces.

With notable wins in his career over Jason “Mayhem” Miller, Dante Rivera, Hector Urbina, and Ryan McGivern, Kennedy would be an integral part of a Strikeforce middleweight division that includes champion Cung Le, former champion Frank Shamrock, Scott Smith, Robbie Lawler, and Benji Radach.

Jorge Santiago Interview

With nine consecutive victories and three belts won in 13 months, Jorge Santiago is happier than ever. Strikeforce and Sengoku champion, the American Top Team fighter returned to the trainings after a long period of resting, and is already ready for challenges. In an exclusive interview to the TATAME.com, the fighter commented the titles and a possible return to UFC, where he hasn’t got a good history. "I hadn’t much experience. Today, the results would be different. With a good fight strategy and bringing Anderson to my game, I would have big chances to beat him", says Jorge, who spoke about his return to the rings, the fight between Thiago Pitbull and Georges St. Pierre, and more.

How are the trainings in ATT going?
Yeah, I had seven fights in a short time, I was in a very fast rhythm. After my last fight, for the Sengoku’s belt, in January, I had to give time for a little rest and recover from my injuries. Thanks God, I'm back to the trainings, because there’re some people that are going to fight, like (Thiago) Pitbull, Gesias, Thiago Silva and others, then I'm helping them here.

You’ve faced a fight marathon in recent times. How did you feel when you won three belts in such a short time?
In fact, I’ve never been stopped. Even when I wasn’t fighting, I was always training and looking to improve my game so that, when the time comes, I could direct my specific training for each type of opponent that I had ahead. This made it much easier for having done all this fights. I’m very happy to have won these belts, but I think I still have much to do.

In all these fights, which one do you consider the toughest and most important?
Certainly the last! (Kazuo) Misaki is a very tough fighter, I wasn’t finding my distance in the fight, he was always very explosive, so I couldn’t stop him in any position... I was also with my hand broken, but every time I wanted to finish the fight and saw in his eyes that he had the same feeling. At the end of the fifth round I got a drop that ended with a submission. I won the fight in the psychological, I didn’t lost the faith at any time, I always believed that I would win, I just didn’t know how (laughs). I was so tired after the fight that I said to Gesias: "I don’t want to do anything until the next year" (laughs).

How is the rest after the marathon of fights?
It was good, but the rest is over. I had time to visit Brazil, my family and friends. Now, I'm back to the trainings.

Do you have an idea of when you’re fighting again?
I already had the opportunity to return, but my coaches and I think it was better to wait a bit. I pretend to be back in July, but it has nothing certain yet. Sure is that I’ll defend my belt in October against the winner of the likely fight between Misaki and Nakamura, which can happen on August 2 (Sengoku 9).

You're winning everyone since 2007 and your name is growing increasingly in the middleweight. How do you see this step up in your career?
I think that is the result of a long standing work. I’ve concentrated a lot on putting my game well capped on all requirements (Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu and physical conditioning) and, of course, I couldn’t forget to talk about the quality we have here for training and trainers, as Ricardo Libório, Ouali Mohammed, Parrumpinha, André Benkei, Darrel Gholar and Conan Silveira. This took me a long time, but today I’m reaping some fruits of this investment.

What was the predominant factor for this positive change in your results?

I think that was the experience I’ve gained over the times and the professionals that I have around me, working with me in the correct way.

You haven’t had a good passage in the UFC, where you won only one of three fights, but, after that, you won everybody. Why weren’t you so well in the UFC?

I think that was what I was talking about earlier, I hadn’t got much experience. Today, the results would be different.

How would you face a return to the UFC now?
Good, I would return very happy! I just didn’t went back yet because I have fights to do in my contract and I still have much to do here in Japan. But, with a good proposal, why not?

Anderson Silva has dominated the weight in the UFC. Do you think there is any athlete in the UFC who is able to stop with his domain? Do you believe you would be this man?
Inside the UFC, I still don’t see anyone who could beat him, but I also think that nobody is invincible. I believe that, with a good fight strategy and bringing Anderson to my game, I would have great chances to beat him.

Who do you consider the three best pound for pound fighter in the world?
To me, in order, is Anderson, Fedor (Emelianenko) and Georges St. Pierre... Until now (laughs).

Pitbull will fight against GSP for the title. How do you think the fight will be?
Pitbull is flying, he wants this belt a lot! ‘Pit’ is a type of athlete that, when you show him a position, he doesn’t forget. You can even do it on him once, but, after he learns to defend, you will never get there again. He is training a lot of Wrestling with athletes with Olympic level, I think he is ready for any kind of situation.
