Serra: ‘They Want Me Dead’

It’s been one of the best UFC bouts you have yet to see -- or if nothing else -- the longest hyped grudge match to come around in a while. Following two previous cancellations, rival welterweights Matt Serra and Matt Hughes are gearing up to face off at UFC 98 on May 23 in Las Vegas.

After coaching opposing teams on “The Ultimate Fighter 6” in late 2007, the oil-and-vinegar pair were on a collision course for UFC 79 that December, until Serra withdrew from a back injury. It’s been a long road ever since.

“Then I ended up fighting in April up in Canada with Georges [St. Pierre at UFC 83],” said Serra. “Then I was going to fight Matt Hughes, but Matt Hughes got injured. I thought it was going to be in the fall, then they pushed it back and I thought it was going to be in January before my kid gets here. Then they wanted it right around a week around when my firstborn was going to be here in March and I said that wasn’t happening. So next thing you know we’re fighting now man and that’s just the way things work out.”

Though it will be nearly 17 months this May since the bickering fighters have graced the small screen with their venom, Serra believes the animosity between former UFC champions has lost none of its fire.

“I can only speak for me and I do,” said Serra. “And according to him what he’s saying and his wife and everybody, they want me dead. So it’s really exciting.”

In two-time Div. 1 wrestler Hughes, Serra said he has a built-in motivation.

“The thing is this, this sport you deal with a lot of guys in this sport and most of them are cool,” said Serra. “It’s a rarity you find an a--hole and I found one. I’m going to get paid to punch him in the mouth. I’m going to do to him what you should do to every bully and that’s not only in America but everywhere in the world. What should you do to a bully? You should punch him square in the mouth. I’m getting paid for it. So who’s got it better than me? I want to know.”

But that doesn’t mean Serra (9-5) isn’t aware of what Hughes (42-7) can bring to the party either.

“I’ve said this before and I’ve been misquoted,” said Serra. “Someone quoted me as saying that he’s a one-trick pony and not good at that one trick. That’s ridiculous. I said that he’s a one-trick pony and he’s very good at that one trick. I’m not stupid. I know that he’s a dangerous guy and people are thinking he’s not what he used to be. He got Thiago [Alves] down. Koscheck didn’t get that guy down. So he did still get that guy down at least one and if he gets on top of you he’s a legit problem. I think his passing is real good and his submission defense and his ground-and-pound is real dangerous, especially from side mount.”

It’s this fragile dichotomy of dislike and practicality the ever-patient Renzo Gracie black belt will carry into his long-awaited tussle with Hughes.

“I’m not an idiot. I’ll tell you I don’t like the guy because I don’t like the guy,” said Serra. “But as a fighter I know the problems he brings to the table and I know what I got to watch out for. I know where he’s really dangerous. What do you want me to say? He’s a swell guy and I can’t wait to fight him? F--- him.”

Atencio: July 11 possible, but nothing decided for Affliction's third show

Depending on who you listen to, Affliction is either planning for its third event to definitely go head-to-head with UFC 100 on July 11, considering the idea, or absolutely going in a different direction.

As for Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio, he hasn't quite made up his mind.

"I still haven't finalized anything," Atencio recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I'm still working on different dates and what not. Nothing's been finalized yet."

While competing for viewership with the UFC, especially on a card as historically significant as UFC 100, may seem a bit foolhardy, Atencio said he does envision a plan that could make sense for his company.

Of course, Atencio knows the doubters will speak up regardless of what he decides.

"I think it could work," Atencio said. "I really do.

"But at the same time there, obviously there's a lot of - no matter what I do, I'm going to be criticized for it. I guess it really doesn't matter either way if I do it or I don't do it."

But above all, Atencio insists the decision for a date has not yet been decided.

"I haven't finalized [the date]," Atencio said. "[Scheduling an event for July 11] is a thought in the back of my head, but whether it's going to happen or not is a different story.

"It could be the weekend before; it could be the weekend after at this point. It could even be moved into August. Right now everything is kind of up in the air until we have all the contracts signed and everything has been finalized.

"We're sitting down, and we're really just kind of figuring it out. That's kind of where I'm at in the whole process. We have some ideas, but right now it's just ideas. That's it."

Affliction has used its first two events to build toward a long-awaited bout between current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko and No. 1 contender Josh Barnett. Recent reports have indicated that a bout between the two would be too expensive for Affliction's taste, but Atencio insisted it was still the most logical main event for the organization's third show.

"To me, I think it is (the most logical choice for a main event)," Atencio said. "But once again, whether it's going to happen or not, I don't know. It really depends on many different factors at this point. Once we have everything in place - until we have it all figured out, I don't want to say anything because it could change.

"It's just right now it's just a matter of if it makes sense or not. We have some ideas. For me, it's a fight I definitely want to see. But is it going to happen? As soon as I announce it, I guess you'll know. I just don't want to announce anything until I have everything finalized."

While Atencio is aware of the reports stating that Affliction is hoping to put together a great third show as a sort of farewell to promoting MMA, he said he isn't so sure it will be the group's final show.

"I'm treating it the way I've done it from day one, and that's just one show at a time," Atencio said. "If we continue that, and we have a relationship with somebody that wants to do - that has set dates, just like all the other events do, then yeah, then we'll look at those dates. But right now, since day one I've always said, 'I'm looking at one fight a time.' That's it."

Affliction has previously worked to co-promote with Strikeforce, a group whose recent expansion has established them as a major player in the national MMA scene. Atencio said he would be willing to continue that relationship.

"We have a great relationship with (Strikeforce CEO) Scott (Coker)," Atencio said. "So yeah, absolutely. I'm always willing to work with him."

While Atencio's comments seem to suggest there are more questions than answers surrounding the promotion's third event, the executive says to remain patient and everything will come to light in due time.

"All the fans, just keep looking for it," Atencio said. "It will happen. It's just a matter of when. This is only my third event. I'm just taking my time.

"Everybody seems to treat it like it's my 10th or 15th fight. It's only our third event. It's not an easy task.

"But nonetheless, just keep talking about us."

Bellator's April 10 card finalized, Wilson Reis vs. Henry Martinez to headline

Undoubtedly one of the busiest men in MMA at this point is upstart promotion Bellator Fighting Championships' matchmaker Matt Stansell.

With more than 120 fights to arrange at 12 different events in just 12 weeks' time, Stansell's plate is unquestionably full.

Stansell today revealed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the finalized card for Bellator's second event, scheduled for April 10 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

As previously announced, the card will be headlined by a featherweight tournament matchup between former EliteXC champion Wilson Reis (6-0) and Greg Jackson-trained fighter Henry Martinez (2-0).

Several non-tournament bouts have been added to the card, including Diego Garijo (3-1) vs. Israel Giron (9-1), Mikey Gomez (9-5) vs. Jesse Juarez (7-5), Matt Makowski (4-1) vs. Aaron Tregear (6-3) and James Garzillo (4-0) vs. Andres Jeudi (0-0).

Garijo is a four-time veteran of Total Combat. "El Nino" turned professional in 2006, reeling off three-straight stoppage wins to start his career. Garijo hasn't seen action since an August 2007 TKO loss to Jesse Newell.

Giron turned professional in April 2007 and has fought in multiple organizations in his native Mexico. Currently riding a four-fight win streak, Giron has earned six submission wins in his nine career victories.

A Gracie Barra Babalu fighter, Gomez fought twice for the now-defunct EliteXC. Gomez owns career wins over Lorenzo Borgomeo, Jeremy May and Matt Brown. The 26-year-old last fought in a December 2008 submission loss to Andre Galvao.

Juarez has fought for Strikeforce, Total Combat and Gladiator Challenge, among others, since turning pro in October 2006. Juarez has faced notable opponents in Luke Stewart, Fabio Nascimento and Bryan Baker, and he last fought in a January submission win over Thomas Kenny.

Makowski is a three-time ProElite veteran. His time there including an infamous May 2008 win over Nick Serra in which "The Mad Monkey" was disqualified when he refused to stand from his butt-scoot position.

After dropping his first two career contests, Canadian Tregear has since won six of his past seven bouts. Currently riding a four-fight win streak, Tregear has earned all six of his career victories by stoppage (three submissions, three TKO's).

Garzillo is an undefeated fighter who has competed exclusively in his native New Jersey. Garzillo last fought in a 57-second knockout win at February's Asylum Fight League 11.

Training out of Massachusetts' Team Sityodtong, Jeudi has established himself as professional kickboxer and amateur mixed martial artist over the past five years.

The event will also host previously announced tournament matches between 155-pound fighters Ivan Iberico and Thomas Schulte, as well as Lyman Good vs. Hector Urbina, Jorge Ortiz vs. Aaron Romero and Omar De La Cruz vs. Victor Meza, all taking place in the 170-pound tournament.

A previously announced 170-pound tournament bout featuring former UFC champion Dave Menne (42-15-2) and Frenchman Norman Paraisy (5-0) has been moved to Bellator's April 17 event in Norman, Okla.

Despite report, Lawler vs. Shields not definite for June 6 in St. Louis (Updated)

Strikeforce's second card since picking up several key assets from ProElite has reportedly undergone a transformation in the past few days according to a blog entry from Matt Hughes on his official website.

As previously announced by Strikeforce, Hughes' training partner Robbie Lawler will meet Jake Shields in the main event of the card.

Hughes writes that the card, which was originally expected to take place in Washington state, will now be moved to June 6 in St. Louis. However, one Strikeforce executive said the change isn't official.

The unedited post from Hughes is reprinted below:

Just found out a few days ago that Robbie Lawler will fight Jake Shields on the Strikeforce card on June 6th, in St. Louis. It’s great to have Robbie fight that close to home. We were worried that he would fight in the month of May close to my fight, so it actually turns out to be a pretty good schedule. As always, Robbie’s a performer and puts on fights that people want to see.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) learned of the potential shift over the weekend, but Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz insisted nothing had yet been determined.

"It's just a rumor right now," Afromowitz said. "We don't have any kind of deal in place."

In addition to the Lawler vs. Shields bout, Strikeforce has also confirmed the participation of light-heavyweight champion Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Joey Villasenor, Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante and Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos in the upcoming event, though opponents for the fighters have not yet been announced.

In separate reports, Kim Couture and Phil Baroni have also announced their intentions to fight on the card, with Baroni being linked to a possible showdown with Joe Riggs.

The California-based Strikeforce organization expressed their interest to conduct shows in the Midwest to MMAjunkie.com as early as November 2008, well before the ProElite acquisitions that bolstered the organization's roster of talent and opened the door for additional broadcast platforms.

Strikeforce's next event, "Shamrock vs. Diaz," is scheduled for April 11 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Bellator completes April 17 Oklahoma show with five new non-tourney bouts

Upstart promotion Bellator Fighting Championships continues to hammer out it's aggressive 12-week schedule, as the group's third show has now been made complete.

The April 17 show, set for the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla., will have five tournament and six non-tourney affairs.

Tickets for the event went on sale through Ticketmaster on Tuesday at 12 p.m. CDT.

In addition to all four first-round matchups in Bellator's middleweight tournament and a 170-pound affair between former UFC champion Dave Menne and Norman Paraisy, Bellator today announced the addition of five new non-tournament bouts and an official opponent for the previously announced Kerry Vera.

Troy Kious (1-0) vs. Lewis Washington (3-0), Mike Messina (2-1) vs. William Albrecht (2-2), Eric Payne (17-7) vs. Johnny Eduardo (20-8), Joey Gorczynski (12-5) vs. Marcelo Alfaia (6-4) and Jason Norwood (5-1) vs. Ariel Gandulla (5-2) were all added to the card, while Brandi Hainey (1-0) was named as Vera's foe.

Kious won his professional debut on March 14 with a 49-second TKO win at Battlegrounds V in New Orleans, while Washington has won his first three bouts by submission since turning pro in September 2008.

Messina built up a 2-1 record in two Oklahoma-based organizations in 2006, but has not fought since a submission loss in September of that year. Albrecht, a fellow Oklahoma resident, has amassed a 2-2 record - with each bout ending in a submission - since turning pro in April 2007.

Payne began fighting professionally in 1998 for the Texas-based Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation. The 32-year-old has won seven of past eight official bouts with one no contest mixed in. Payne's most notable career win came in a 2001 win over Duane Ludwig.

Eduardo, a Brazilian fighter that owns 11 submission wins in his 20 career victories. Fighting professionally since 1996, Eduardo is currently riding a six-fight win streak.

Gorczynski is an Oklahoma-based fighter that has been fighting professionally since 2006. Despite dropping his past two contests, Gorczynski has earned 11 of his 12 career wins by submission.

Alfaia has been fighting professionally in Brazil since 2002. The 30-year-old last fought in a March 2008 unanimous decision win, a bout that snapped a three-fight losing streak for Alfaia.

Norwood has put together a five-fight winning streak in the Oklahoma-based Freestyle Cage Fighting organization. The streak includes two wins by submission and two by TKO.

Cuban native Gandulla has dropped two-straight contests since beginning his career 5-0. The middleweight built a 1-1 record in the WEC, then last fought in a December 2008 knockout loss in the Florida-based Mixed Fighting Alliance.

Hainey was victorious by submission in her December 2008 professional debut.

With the addition to the card, the event now includes:

* Non-tourney: Brandi Hainey vs. Kerry Vera
* Non-tourney: Troy Kious vs. Lewis Washington
* Non-tourney: William Albrecht vs. Mike Messina
* Non-tourney: Johnny Eduardo vs. Eric Payne
* Non-tourney: Marcelo Alfaia vs. Joey Gorczynski
* Non-tourney: Ariel Gandulla vs. Jason Norwood

UFC Quick Quote: It’s time for Carlos Condit to fight the best in the world

“I felt like it was my time to fight the other top 10 welterweights in the world, and they’re in the UFC….To get a title shot I feel like I need to put together maybe three impressive wins. I feel like I’m definitely in the top five or six welterweights, but that remains to be seen, and I think fighting Martin Kampmann gives me a good chance to show what I can do…. Martin Kampmann is very well rounded, so I have to stay sharp in all aspects of my game. I imagine he’s thinking the same thing…. He’s very tough. He’s a solid fighter…. I expect it to be very fast paced and all over the place. We both have similar strengths as far as our skill sets and I expect a very exciting fight.”

Paulo Filho Interview

Phenomenon in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, Paulo Filho was unanimity in middleweight rankings, which showed him as the second best athlete in the division. Coming undefeated to WEC, the black belt won the belt of the category, but several problems outside the ring resulted in his first defeat and his release from the organization. After several months of treatment, Filho is back to the trainings. In exclusive interview to the TATAME, Paulão talked about his treatment, the victory of Demian Maia over his tormentor, Chael Sonnen, the trainings with Arona and how would it be if his friend was in the UFC, Wanderlei Silva change of category and said about the cover report from the TATAME Magazine March issue, which put his fights with Shogun and Anderson.

How was your return to the trainings?
I’m 100%, training hard with the Master Distak, who is giving me a sensational base, and the Master Oswaldo Alves, a vision totally different of the Jiu-Jitsu. Thanks God I’m more focused, recovered from the problems I had. I met a cool girl that supports me. My father is in good health, everything is perfect for me. I think this is the best stage of my life.

You’re also training with Anderson and Minotauro in Rio?
No. I didn’t go to the X-Gym for personal reasons. I’m doing some training at Tonico Jr. academy.

I spoke with your manager and he said you were next to close with the Bellator, but it didn’t work. How is your head to return to the fights?
I’ll go to the event that pays me better... Give me the money and fuck the rest (laughs).

How was your treatment?
I was very well received by the doctor, treated my depression, I’m cured, beyond the other problems that I also had and that can happen to any athlete. Since I left the clinic, I’m strong, very well. People will have a big surprise to see Paulo Filho back.

What did you think of Demian’s victory against Chael Sonnen?
First, I would like to congratulate Demian, who is showing the best ground of MMA, undoubtedly. Sonnen is a very hard guy and he won him easily. He is doing a great job raising the flag, I was very happy, really. He showed to Sonnen that the Jiu-Jitsu is the most complete martial art.

In the March edition of TATAME, we made a card with ten dream fights, and you appear in two of them: against Maurício Shogun and Anderson Silva. How do you think would be a fight between you?
Against Shogun, I think I win, easily. He is a good athlete, has enough force, it’s intense, stripped, invents, shows the game, but I think he has gaps and with my force and well trained, I can stop his game, even because I’m physically stronger than him. But Anderson is a guy I that I wouldn’t fight at all. We have the same manager, are friends and I think it has space for everybody. With Shogun would be a matter of honor, I believe that the Chute Boxe, today, is the former Luta Livre, then have a romantic motive in this fight, but Anderson is out of the question.

Speaking about Chute Boxe, what did you think of the losses of athletes like Wanderlei, Shogun, Ninja, and Rafael Cordeiro going to the United States?
Just as the Chute Boxe formed Shogun, Wanderlei, Anderson Silva, Ninja and many others, will make even more. Rudimar is a pioneer guy, Rafael Cordeiro too, they are able to restart, is a matter of time. It’s more than proof that they have one of the strongest schools in the world. They’re groundwork has been done and they could make athletes even better.

Have you already trained with Arona in your return?
I have been training again, we talk a lot. He is my soul mate, think as I think, has the same principle of honor and justice, defend the Jiu-Jitsu, lover of nature and sports. I think he has everything to return and, in my opinion, is the number one at light heavyweight, he just needs to work hard that he has no opponent in that category.

How do you think Arona would be at the UFC now?
Arona has lots of quality and a sensational star, is one of the bravest guys I know, is the stronger guy of the category and is from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is the guy who won Fedor, so there are no comments for him. He is more mature, with 30 years old, working hard in silence.

After the defeat to Quinton Rampage, Wanderlei went down to the middleweight. How do you think he will fight in this category?
Wanderlei is a strong guy. I’m a guy who always weight 204lbs training and in good shape, but now, for example, I’m with 205lbs, and have difficulties. He is heavier than me, he will feel a lot and will lose much of that power. And as he is an athlete who doesn’t have the greatest technical part, if he gets a good Wrestler, gets more complicated. He will make the experience until 84kg and then go up. A council from who knows, he will feel it, for sure.

He will face Rich Franklin, the former middleweight champion. How do you think the fight will be?
At 205lbs I don’t see much problem, but at middleweight I don’t guarantee. Rich already fought many times in this category, he’s used to, I don’t know... I cheer for him, his Brazilian, but I think he will fell a little difficulty.

UFC CONFIRMS BOUTS FOR KOSCHECK AND TAYLOR

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Tuesday night confirmed bouts for UFC veterans Josh Koscheck and Paul Taylor, two bouts that were previously reported on MMAWeekly.com.

Having repeatedly stated that he wants to remain busy, Koscheck gets his wish, as he will return to action at UFC 98 on May 23 in Las Vegas. He will make his sixth start in the Octagon in a little more than a year when he steps in to face Chris Wilson. Their bout will be part of the fight card featuring a UFC light heavyweight championship bout between current titleholder Rashad Evans and No. 2 ranked Lyoto Machida.

UFC 99 will mark the promotion's initial foray into Germany with former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin facing former Pride champion Wanderlei Silva in a 195-pound catchweight bout.

U.K. fighter Paul Taylor will make his sixth start for the promotion at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, welcoming Polish born fighter Peter Sobotta to the UFC. Sobotta should have a decided edge with the crowd, as he has called Balingen, Germany, home since he was three years old.

Joe Riggs vs. Phil Baroni Likely For June Strikeforce

fter a proposed fight between Joe Riggs and former Elite XC welterweight champion, Jake Shields, was scrapped in favor of Shields taking on Robbie Lawler in a middleweight bout, Riggs was left without a fight for the April Strikeforce debut on Showtime.

Now it appears that Riggs will get a fight, but he will instead have to wait until June when Strikeforce puts on their 2nd Showtime show emulating from St. Louis and the "Diesel" is likely to face the "New York Badass" Phil Baroni.

A source close to the negotiations indicated to MMAInsider on Tuesday that the fight was proposed, but nothing has been finalized at this point.

Joe Riggs last competed in Strikeforce in Nov 2008 in a win over Luke Stewart by TKO in the fighter's return to the welterweight division after several bouts in the 185lb weight class.

Phil Baroni hasn't fought since Sept 2008 when he made an appearance in the Palace Fighting Championships, winning a decision over Olaf Alfonso.

Strikeforce, Others Scouting Lashley

After only two pro fights, the vultures have started to circle, or at least inquire about former pro wrestler Bobby Lashley.

Promoters are on the hunt for the next Brock Lesnar, which is understandable. The former WWE heavyweight champion’s three UFC pay-per-view appearances have drawn between 650,000 and 1 million reported buys –- a surge that indicates pro wrestling fans are also tuning in.

A self-professed free agent, Lashley told the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown Show” on Monday that he’s already been in contact with the Palace Fighting Championships, Xtreme Fighting Championships and certain unnamed promotions in Japan. Then there’s Strikeforce, of course, which recently inked a multi-year deal to air their events on Showtime.

“We’ve talked to [Strikeforce],” said Lashley. “The guys out there, with Scott Coker, we’ve talked to. I think they have a great organization. I think the thing about them is that they have a quality show and they earned the respect of all the MMA people out there. That’s one thing we’ve been talking about with them.”

Lashley said he’s been impressed by Coker and the Strikeforce team’s business acumen.

“A lot of guys go out there and feel like they need to take on the UFC and I know that’s not what Scott Coker is about,” said the three-time college wrestling champion. “He’s about putting on great shows for the people and if it builds, it builds, and if it doesn’t build up to the UFC quality level at least you’re still putting on quality shows out there with quality fights.”

Lashley, 32, graced the sport for a second time in Pensacola, Fla., last Saturday in a hybrid MMA-boxing event promoted by aging star Roy Jones Jr.

Originally set to face Ken Shamrock before he was suspended for steroid use in California, the 6-foot-3, 265-pound Lashley went the distance with journeyman light heavyweight Jason Guida (17-20), who gave the Armed Forces champion problems at certain moments before and during the fight. In the third round, Guida latched on a guillotine choke, but was unable to finish the persistent Lashley.

“I think I went to sleep and then came back to,” Lashley said. “The guillotine was tight, I’ll tell you that for truth … . I had friends and family watching back home and my fiancée had said something. She said that Bobby would rather die than tap. And at that point that’s what was going through my head. At that point I think a lot of people in my situation would have tapped too. I told myself, ‘At this point if I’m going out, I’m going out.’ I pulled my head out after that and I finished it.”

Eager to learn, Lashley noted what he gleamed both in and out of the ring.

“Everything from the beginning of the fight and the press conference where things got a little heated, maybe he was trying to get me out of my game and being a relatively new fighter, he got to me a little bit,” he said. “Those are some of things I have to work on so I can stay focused for my match.”

Despite his stumbles against Guida, Lashley emphasized the bigger picture when it comes to his development.

“There are more pros than cons in this fight,” said Lashley, who has trained in two to three intervals with the noted American Top Team. “Going three rounds, knowing that I can go three rounds. My shape is great, but when I went out there I didn’t really push the action like I should’ve. I haven’t really taken any time off from training. I’m training as early as today. Let’s go hit some mitts and I’m working with my boxing coach to help develop my boxing. I’m going to hit some cardio and we’re going to do some training today. I’m getting right back into it and hopefully we can get another fight in the next four, five, six weeks.”

Anthony Johnson vs. Matt Brown nearly set for The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale

Two hard-hitting welterweights are likely to meet at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale in June.

Anthony Johnson (7-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC), who was originally expected to fight John Howard at the event, will instead likely take on Matt Brown (9-7 MMA, 3-1 UFC).

Reports that the fight is set are a little premature, but both fighters have agreed to the contest, and bout agreements are expected to be finalized this week, a source close to the event told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

The event, which concludes the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter: U.S. vs. U.K.," takes place June 20 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort and airs on Spike TV.

Johnson returns to action looking for his third consecutive win. Since a controversial loss to Kevin Burns at UFC Fight Night 14 (Johnson suffered a deep eye poke, but the referee missed it and allowed the fight to continue), Johnson has avenged the loss with a head-kick KO of Burns and most recently scored a first-round TKO of Luigi Fioravanti.

Brown, meanwhile, looks to continue his career resurrection when he also goes for his third straight victory. After a stint on "The Ultimate Fighter 7," Brown is 3-1 in the UFC, and the lone loss came via split decision to undefeated Dong Hyun Kim. Brown most recently scored a first-round TKO thrashing of Pete Sell.

Paul Taylor vs. Peter Sobotta welterweight bout official for UFC 99

A welterweight bout between Paul Taylor (9-4-1 MMA, 2-3 UFC) and UFC newcomer Peter Sobotta (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is signed and set for UFC 99, which takes place June 13 at Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany.

Thomas Gerbasi of UFC.com reported the bout overnight.

The Taylor vs. Sobotta matchup is slated for the night's preliminary card.

The night's main card, which features a main event between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva (at a catch-weight of 195 pounds), airs on pay per view.

Taylor, who first joined the UFC in 2007, looks to bounce back from a recent unanimous-decision loss to Chris Lytle. He also looks to rebound from a recent four-fight streak in which he's 1-3 with his lone victory coming via split decision over Jess Liaudin.

UFC 99's PPV main card is nearly complete with four of the five bouts officially announced. In addition to Franklin vs. Silva, the UFC 99 main card includes Spencer Fisher and Caol Uno, Mike Swick vs. Ben Saunders, and Marcus Davis vs. Dan Hardy. The final slot will likely go to Heath Herring vs. Cain Velasquez, though the bout has not been officially announced.

"TUF7" alumns Matthew Riddle and Dan Cramer meet at UFC 101

"The Ultimate Fighter 7" cast members Matthew Riddle (2-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Dan Cramer (1-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will meet at UFC 101, an event expected to take place Aug. 8 in Philadelphia.

The news come from FiveOuncesofPain.com, though the report didn't specify whether bout agreements have been signed.

The fight will likely end up on the un-televised preliminary card of the pay-per-view event.

The 23-year-old Riddle returns to competition for the first time since a spirited victory over Steve Bruno at February's UFC Fight Night 17 event. Riddle lost the opening round of the preliminary bout, but he stormed back for dominant second and third rounds to earn the unanimous-decision win.

Riddle entered "TUF7" with no professional experience, but he earned a spot on the cast with a TKO win that broke opponent Dan Simmler's jaw. However, after that elimination-round victory, he suffered a submission defeat to veteran Tim Credeur in the next round. Riddle returned at the show's live finale, where he scored a decision victory over Dante Rivera to earn a spot on the UFC's roster of fighters.

Cramer, too, earned a spot on the "TUF7" cast when he defeated Jeremiah Riggs via TKO in an elimination-round bout. Cramer then defeated Luke Zachrich but was knocked out of the competition with a submission loss to Credeur in the quarterfinals.

Cramer didn't fight at the show's live finale and instead took on Matt Arroyo at UFC 94 in January. Cramer defeated the submission specialist via split decision for his first professional victory.

M-1 Challenge 2009 matches set for Bulgaria on March 28

Amsterdam, Holland - There are just several days remaining until the second stop of the 2009 “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction” touches down in Bourgas, Bulgaria. A total of 30 fighters representing six teams are now in transit to Bourgas in anticipation of this weekend’s M-1 Challenge event.

On Saturday, March 28, Turkey, The World Team, Germany, Team Russian Legion, Team North America, and the host Bulgarian team will all make their 2009 M-1 Challenge season debuts at the Mladost Sports Hall, located just minutes from the sunny beach resorts of Bourgas.

Complete lineups for the three head-to-head team matchups are set with local fans in attendance in store for a full night of action featuring a total of 15 fights. While some might be surprised to see a major MMA event scheduled for Bulgaria, M-1 Global officials deemed it a tremendous location for its second ‘09 event due to the increased growth of the sport of MMA in the country.

One of the forefathers of MMA’s growth in Bulgaria is its most well-known fighter, former Bulgarian Olympic wrestler Jordan Radev. The 32-year old Plovdiv native has gone 7-0 since leaving the UFC and currently boasts an MMA record of 18-3.

Radev will be leading Team Bulgaria against Team North America and will be matched up in a middleweight encounter against former NFL running back Herbert “Whisper” Goodman.

Goodman, an elite athlete who played two seasons for the Green Bay Packers as a backup to former Pro Bowl running back Ahman Green, has made tremendous recent progress as a fighter despite his late entry into the sport.

An interesting subplot to watch will be the debut of a revamped German roster. Last year’s German team was eliminated from the 2008 M-1 Challenge early due to overwhelming defeats. However, a new roster of German fighters led by a new coaching staff will look to redeem their nation when it faces Turkey.

For those unable to attend this weekend’s M-1 Challenge event in Bourgas, complete coverage will be available at M-1Global.com throughout the weekend including weigh-in results and any last minute lineup changes; a live play-by-play blog; as well as a post-fight recap with photos.

With the exception of an injury to Turkish middleweight Kamil Uygun, the entire card for Saturday is now available below (local start time of 9 p.m.):
