link: http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content3900.html?PHPSESSID=103c335d8c1cd167fa3c561964760aa4
"I would like to fight Jake Shields; I would. I think he's an unbelievable fighter. I'm not calling him out or disrespecting him, but I think Jake is an unbelievable fighter. To be in a fight like that would be very exciting and I think it's a similar fight to the Luke Stewart fight, but Jake's a little better. I think it would be a great fight and a great win. It's a fight that I would like to have," stated MMA welterweight contender Joe Riggs as he talked about his future plans after his win over Luke Stewart at Strikeforce: Destruction. Check out what else he had to say.

Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva Interview

Back to Japan after two years, Antonio "Bigfoot" will turn around the world to fight after the Athletic Commission has suspended him with the accusation of using boldenona, and the fighter already has a defined challenge. Facing Yoshihiro Nakao, Pezão wants to go back to Japan in great style, but far from the controversial "kiss" of the Japanese. In an interview with TATAME.com, Bigfoot spoke about his expectations for the fight, guaranteed that it won’t be a problem to return to America and also commented the major heavyweight battles at UFC and Affliction. Check below the exclusive interview with Silva to TATAME.

What is the expectation for your debut in Sengoku?
I was just waiting, because everything was on track, needing only some details, that had been settled this week. I’m very happy to return to Japan, where I have many fans that received and welcomed me very well. I had the opportunity to make two battles there in another event and walked away victorious in both, and I’m very happy to come back. I'm already practicing for a while, doing my ground game, which I was recently graduated black belt, Wrestling with Darrel Gohlar and my Muay Thai. I’m emphasizing these three parts now.

Have you studied the game of your opponent?
Man, Yoshihiro is an unpredictable fighter standing, not very technical, try to surprise with some lucky punches, try to take you down, but I have very good professionals of Wrestling here, then the question is just get well-conditioned and it has no mystery. Getting there very focus, I’ll search the victory, maybe submitting or knockout. I will respect him, there’s no easy fight, fight is fight. For a long time, ‘Sukata’ (former coach) said: 'it only ends when it ends". I will fight as if I were fighting against the best in the world.

You need to be careful with the kisses too, huh?
Man, we are training this too. We’re training Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestilng and that too (laughter), maintain a certain distance not to take that risk. My hands are kind of big and I’ll always take care not to get close. Who did once can do twice, I don’t want to have problems, I want to get there and fight. I don’t like jokes, I have no disinclination to any professional who I’d fought, and thank God I like all of them and they all liked me.

Do you think fighting at Japan may be a problem in a possible return to the United States, after the suspension?
No way. We’ve closed with Japan because I’m a professional, I have family, I have a very high cost of living and, besides, I have to fight, be in evidence, and now recently I’ve made further examinations that did not accept, because it was in a particular laboratory, but we’ll do another examination, this time along with a police officer for the Commission of Florida, and will go to the common justice. I simply can’t be accused for something I haven’t done, this story is not over yet. I’m going forward with it and will be solved. I’ll do these fights in Japan until I fix this. They (Athletic Comission) are more flexible now, contacted Alex (Davis, manager of the fighter), saying that after the Armando Garcia’s leaving they don’t want confusion, they want to review the case. They know no one ever fought like I'm fighting for that because they were all guilty, but I’m not.

How do you think will be the fight between “Minotauro” Nogueira and Frank Mir at UFC 92?
Fight is fight, each fight has a certain danger, but, for the obvious, for the technical issue, the fight itself, and not for being a big fan of him, for being my godfather, a great friend, but I'm sure that Minotauro will win, for the grapple he has, perseverance... Frank Mir is no fool, has good ground, is technical, but today there is no ground game like Minotauro’s. Mir’s ground game is good, but Minotauro’s is wonderful, and I bet whatever I have to bet on Minotauro.

What did you think of the victory of Brock Lesnar against Randy Couture?
I will tell you the truth: I was betting on Couture, who has the experience, but I’ve missed that. He got tired, felt Brock’s weight, and I think he didn’t fight well. He didn’t come in being the Randy Couture he always being, who fought five rounds... In the fight with Tim Sylvia, he fought five rounds, finished punishing on the ground, helped Tim to get up and was still jumping in the octagon...

How would be a fight between Minotauro and Brock?
Minotauro will pass through Mir and it doesn’t have a chance to Brock Lesnar win Minotauro. He has no technique, is rough, thick, and is a stone diamond that needs to be polished. He’ll be a great fighter one day, but it will take a while to be cut.

And the fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski?
I will tell you that I’m cheering for Fedor, so he continues unbeaten. Despite Andrei being a good fighter, has a good boxing, is brutal, a good swing in the octagon, but I will cheer for Fedor continue unbeaten for, maybe, who knows a day... I'm in the line and one day who knows. Everyone’s dream is to defeat Fedor, just like Arlovski’s dream is to win him, my wish is this. I have to prepare and expect that opportunity, perhaps returning to the United States or he goes to Japan. I wish he doesn’t think about retirement and continue winning. I admire him a lot, he’s good on the ground, hand, is 100% in everything.

And if UFC and Affliction invite you? The fact of Fedor being in Affliction can weigh more?
To tell the truth, I had contact from both events before this story from the Commission, when the EliteXC was over, but I wanna go where I’m recovered, when threat me well and receive respect as an athlete. If the UFC do that, great, if Affliction does it too, wonderful. As I always say, I’m a commodity for sale, but I have my principles. The only flags I raise are my family and the American Top Team.

Germen Media Critical Of Dana White

It appears the largest Media Newspaper in Germany is not quite liking the idea of the UFC, and its running man entering Germany, without calling him out on his past.

“White, a short, round-headed man wearing a skin-tight shirt and belt with a skull-shaped buckle, is the president of the UFC. He is 39, a former bouncer and a bellhop at a Boston hotel. He was found guilty of assault and, because he refused to pay the fine, wound up in prison. He became a boxing trainer and fled from the Mafia to Las Vegas, where he had grown up, and opened a boxing gym. White now owns a Range Rover, a Ferrari and two Mercedes, but he still has difficulty saying three sentences without the word “fuck” in at least one of them.”

Tapia on Torres: 'He's Human'
videolink: http://www.sherdog.com/videos/recent/Tapia-on-Torres-Hes-Human-1843
Manny Tapia never envisioned himself on such a grand stage fighting such a formidable opponent.

“When I first started fighting, I just wanted to fight one time just to say that I did it,” he told Sherdog.com in an exclusive video interview. “I never thought I’d be fighting at the level that I’m fighting at right now.”

Tapia (10-0-1) will challenge Miguel Torres for the World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight championship at WEC 37 this Wednesday at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Spawned by the California-based King of the Cage promotion, the 27-year-old will carry a nine-fight winning streak into the most important bout of his career.

The two world-ranked bantamweights were originally scheduled to meet at WEC 34 in June, but a torn knee ligament forced Tapia to withdraw from the match. Torres went on to batter former King of Pancrase Yoshihiro Maeda in one of the frontrunners for “Fight of the Year.” The missed opportunity only deepened Tapia’s hunger.

“I want this,” he said. “Two knee surgeries later, and they’re giving me the shot again. You better believe I want this. I want this more than anything right now.”

Torres (34-1), one of the world’s top pound-for-pound mixed martial artists, has not tasted defeat in more than five years. The 27-year-old East Chicago, Ind., native has won 15 fights in a row, the last 10 by technical knockout or submission.

“He’s human,” Tapia said. “We’re all human.”

UFC 91 DRUG TEST RESULTS BEAR NO SURPRISES

There has been such a focus applied to drug testing in sports these days that, frequently, no news is news. Such is the case with the 10 fighters that were drug tested on Nov. 15 at UFC 91.

Randy Couture, Brock Lesnar, Kenny Florian, Dustin Hazelett, Gabriel Gonzaga, Demian Maia, Jeremy Stephens, Aaron Riley, Mark Bocek, and Matt Brown were all tested for performance enhancing substances and drugs of abuse. All 10 fighters came back negative, meaning nothing incriminating was found in their systems, according to Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

There were also 10 fighters from UFC 91 tested prior to the event as part of Nevada's out-of-competition testing process, which made its debut this year.

The fighters that were tested prior to UFC 91 – who all returned negative results – were: Randy Couture, Brock Lesnar, Nick Catone, Amir Sadollah, Aaron Riley, Jorge Gurgel, Alvin Robinson, Mark Bocek, Nate Quarry, and Demian Maia.

The Current Cost Of Pro Elite Freedom

According to a manager with multiple fighters under the ProElite banner, the dormant company is now making it all but impossible for its signees to work elsewhere.

Early in the saga of the marooned fighters, ProElite sent managers a notice requiring written permission from the company to place their clients in another promotion. Now, a few new requirements have been added.

In addition to written consent, fighter reps must provide ProElite with video footage of their outside fight. The fighter must also be identified as a "ProElite fighter" in their appearance.

Ever looming in the manager's attempt to keep his fighters working is the threat of "injunctive relief" by ProElite, or a court order preventing them from fighting elsewhere.

Amongst the managers and industry vets MMAInsider spoke to, confusion is still the norm on the status of the Los Angeles-based company.

On a side note, the manager also stated that fledgling promotion Art of War is out of the running as the new investor for ProElite due to lack of funds.

Gleison Tibau vs. Rich Clementi set to take place in February

A lightweight matchup between Gleison Tibau and Rich Clementi has been finalized and is set to take place in February during either UFC Fight Night 17 on Feb. 7 or UFC 95 on Feb. 21.

InTheGuard.tv was the force to report the possibility of the matchup and FiveOuncesOfPain.com has since confirmed with sources close to both fighters that Clementi and Tibau have signed for on the fight.

Tibau, 15-6, trains out of American Top Team and will be looking to rebound vs. Clementi following consecutive losses. His two-fight losing streak began at UFC 81 in February, where he dropped a hard fought decision to Tyson Griffin. Tibau then returned to the Octagon to face Joe Stevenson at UFC 86 this past July, where he was defeated after tapping to a guillotine choke at 2:57 of round 2.

Prior to his losses against Griffin and Stevenson, Tibau had won four consecutive bouts with three taking place under the UFC banner. During a pro MMA career that spans almost seven years, Tibau has recorded notable victories over Fabricio Camoes, Jason Dent, Jeff Cox, and Terry Etim.

Clementi, the head instructor of Team Voodoo, is 32-13-1 during an MMA career that dates back to 1999. His most recent fight was a unanimous decision loss to Gray Maynard at UFC 90 in October, which ended a six fight winning streak for Clementi.

The Louisiana resident is 5-4 in nine career UFC fights and holds notable wins over Anthony Johnson, Melvin Guillard, Sam Stout, and Etim.

Sylvia Aims at Japan, Ken Shamrock

After losing to Fedor Emelianenko last July, Tim Sylvia plans for a big return.

The former UFC heavyweight champion is prepared to fight in Japan in roughly 30 days. Sylvia’s manager, Monte Cox, is actively seeking a fight for “The Maine-iac” on K-1 and Dream’s co-promoted “Premium 2008 Dynamite” card on Dec. 31 or World Victory Road’s Sengoku event on Jan. 4. Cox said Sylvia has been granted a certificate of eligibility to participate in either promotion.

“I don’t think anyone ever knows until about a week before they fight,” said Sylvia of preparing for an opponent in one of the Japanese organizations.

Sylvia (24-5) hoped to return to Affliction in January, but Cox confirmed that the 6-foot-8 heavyweight will sit out the novice promotion’s second show set for Jan. 24 in Anaheim, Calif., which features an Emelianenko-Andrei Arlovski clash.

Sylvia, who also has a contract with Cox’s Adrenaline MMA promotion, has been eyeing a meeting UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock (26-13-2).

“I was supposed to fight Ken Shamrock December 20, but it’s been postponed to February now,” said Sylvia. “He’s a free agent. I was supposed to fight him in a small show called XP3 Promotions. I believe in Texas, but it’s postponed to February now.”

Cox echoed Sylvia’s position that a bout with the 44-year-old Shamrock was in the works.

However, Melissa Ingram, director of media relations for Ken Shamrock Entertainment Inc., was hesitant to describe the fight as being in “preliminary negotiations.”

Shamrock’s manager Ron Donohoo told Sherdog.com on Monday that the bout was not under consideration.

“Our organization was approached some time ago about the prospect of Ken fighting Sylvia, but it was rejected,” Donohoo wrote in an email.

Donohoo did not disclose the reason the fight was declined. XP3 Promotions, which has a Feb. 7 event scheduled at the Reliant Arena in Houston according to its Web site, was not immediately available for comment.

Despite the opposing sides, Sylvia expects to see much action in the coming months, including a fight with Shamrock.

“I love to fight and a fight’s a fight,” said Sylvia. “He’s a Hall of Famer. He’s a legend. To progress your career you always have to fight somebody like that.

“I don’t know if he’s a stepping stone or anything, but he’s been on some of the same cards I’ve been on and he’s been highlighted over me, so I want to let people that I am better than this guy and there’s no reason he should have been highlighted over me.”

BABALU BUMPED, LINDLAND VS. BELFORT IN JANUARY

Renato "Babalu" Sobral defeated Bobby Southworth recently to capture the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship. One unfortunate side effect for the new titleholder, however, is that he has been removed from a fight against No. 3 ranked middleweight Matt Lindland.

Affliction had planned to pair Babalu and Lindland against each other at the promotion's Jan. 24 event at The Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. It now appears that Babalu's recent effort at 205 pounds for Strikeforce may have necessitated the bout with Lindland to be at a catch weight in the 190 to 195-pound range.

Affliction vice president Tom Atencio told MMAWeekly.com on Monday that he made an "executive decision" not to do the catch weight fight. He instead decided to pit Lindland against Vitor Belfort in a true middleweight contest at 185 pounds.

Belfort has been on a three-fight winning streak, his most recent effort being at Affliction's debut outing in July. There he defeated fellow UFC veteran Terry Martin, knocking him out in the second round. It was an impressive debut for the Brazilian at 185 pounds.

His most recent effort also being on Affliction's debut card, Lindland saw his first action in more than a year, defeating Fabio Nascimento in a three-round unanimous decision. He recently made a run at politics in his home state of Oregon, but lost his bid. Lindland has now returned to training for his January fight with a new focus.

Belfort and Lindland were scheduled to fight each other on the "Day of Reckoning" card when it was originally planned for October in Las Vegas. The move to January saw their bout split apart before the recent decision to put it back together.

Aoki-Alvarez in the Works, Not Official Yet

Consider it an early Christmas present.

Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki, two of the world’s top four lightweights, may fight one another at K-1 “Premium 2008 Dynamite” on Dec. 31 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Monte Cox, who manages Alvarez, confirmed the news to Sherdog.com on Monday.

Sherdog.com initially reported that both camps had verbally agreed to the fight, but Tuesday afternoon Cox clarified that the fight is in the works but not a done deal.

Alvarez (15-1) and Aoki were on track to meet in the final of the Dream lightweight grand prix in July, but the American was unable to continue in the tournament after his grueling semifinal victory over Tatsuya Kawajiri. Aoki, meanwhile, went on to lose to alternate Joachim Hansen, the man Alvarez defeated in the quarterfinals.

A budding superstar and former Bodog Fight welterweight champion, Alvarez has made quite an impact since moving down in weight. Based out of Philadelphia’s Fight Factory, the 24-year-old has rattled off five straight wins since suffering the only defeat of his career -- a technical knockout loss to Nick Thompson in April 2007. Knockout victories over Brazilian Andre Amade and UFC veterans Aaron Riley and Derrick Noble anchor his impressive resume.

Alvarez, who married in September, still plans to compete at an Extreme Challenge show next month in Atlantic City, N.J. No opponent has been named.

One of the world’s premier submission grapplers, Aoki (18-3) last competed in September, when he submitted World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Todd Moore in 70 seconds at Dream 6. More than half (10) of the 25-year-old’s 18 career wins have come by submission. Seasoned by the Pride, Shooto and Deep promotions, Aoki holds notable victories against American Top Team ace Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante, Akira Kikuchi (twice) and Clay French. His loss to Hansen -- whom he also owns a win against -- in July ended a 13-fight unbeaten streak.

The Alvarez-Aoki showdown provides more star power for the traditional end-of-the-year K-1 show, which also includes a non-title lightweight fight pairing Hansen with Cavalcante and a long-awaited matchup between Kazushi Sakuraba and Kiyoshi Tamura. In addition, Dream middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi and Kawajiri will be in action in separate bouts held under K-1 rules.

Thiago Tavares returns to Florida's American Top Team

UFC lightweight Thiago Tavares, a fighter who's lost three of his past four fights after beginning his career with 12 consecutive victories, has rejoined the Florida-based American Top Team.

Richie Guerriero, general manager of ATT, today made the announcement in an email sent to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

The 24-year-old Tavares first joined ATT when he was just 18 years old but eventually hooked on with Murilo Rupp's Ataque-Duplo, which is affiliated with the Brazilian Top Team. Tavares returns to ATT in preparation for an upcoming fight at UFC 94.

"[It's] great to see an old friend back training with us," Guerriero stated.

Tavares (13-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) next fights on Jan. 31 when he meets "The Ultimate Fighter 5" runner-up Manny Gamburyan. The fight was officially announced earlier today.

Tavares, a Judo and jiu-jitsu practitioner, first joined the UFC in 2007, and he posted victories over Naoyuki Kotani and Jason Black. He then suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Tyson Griffin, and though he'd rebound for a win over Michihiro Omigawa, Tavares then suffered losses to Matt Wiman and Kurt Pellegrino in his most recent fights.

Tavares joins other recent ATT signees, including UFC fighter Mark Bocek, Hector Lombard and former WWE star Bobby Lashley.

WEC 38 announced for same weekend as "Affliction: Day of Reckoning"

World Extreme Cagefighting announced overnight that its first event of 2009 will take place Jan. 25 -- one day after "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" takes place just 100 miles away.

"WEC 38: Varner vs. Cerrone," which airs on Versus (9:30 p.m. ET), features a main event between WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone, as well as a co-main event rematch between Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver.

The event takes place at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, which is a couple hours south of Anaheim's Honda Center, which hosts "Day of Reckoning" and a main event between Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski.

WEC 38 will be held on a rare Sunday. Most events, including Wednesday's WEC 37 card, have taken place on Wednesdays.

Tickets for WEC 38 go on sale this Thursday, Dec. 4, and range from $35 to $175. The San Diego Sports Arena can accommodate up to approximately 16,000 spectators, though a smaller seating configuration will likely be used for the WEC event.

Varner (15-2), who defeated Rob McCullough for the title in February, goes for his fifth consecutive victory and second successful title defense. He most recently scored a first-round TKO victory over Marcus Hicks in August.

Cerrone (9-0), meanwhile, is 2-0 with one no-contest (failed drug test due to a diuretic) since joining the WEC in 2007. He most recently defeated McCullough via unanimous decision in a remarkable bout at WEC 36.

"I have a lot of respect for Cerrone, but I consider him just one more undefeated fighter that I have to put in his place," Varner stated.

Faber (21-2), meanwhile, returns to action for the first time since losing his WEC featherweight title to Mike Brown. The loss snapped his 13-fight win streak, which included a June decision victory over Pulver (22-10-1) in perhaps the WEC's biggest event to date.

"Jens is always ready to fight, he's a competitor, and I expect a tough battle, but I'm going to try to finish it this time," Faber stated. "I don't want it to go the distance."

Pulver most recently suffered a 72-second TKO to Leonard Garcia in November. It was his fourth loss in his past five fights.

Jim Miller to replace Frankie Edgar at Dec. 10 UFC Fights for the Troops

Jim Miller (12-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will replace an injured Frankie Edgar (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and will fight Matt Wiman (10-3 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at next week's "UFC Fight Night 16: UFC Fights for the Troops" event.

The news was first reported by fiveounceofpain.com, which cited a source close to one of the fighters.

The Miller-Wiman fight is slated for the Spike TV-televised main card of the Dec. 10 event, which takes place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C., as a fundraiser for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

The news will certainly come as a surprise to Wiman, a stand-out from "The Ultimate Fighter 5." Just hours ago he told TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com), that he was working on a game plan to combat Edgar's sometimes-smothering offense.

Instead, Wiman, who goes for his fifth consecutive victory, will meet Miller, a former IFL fighter who made his UFC debut with a submission victory over David Baron at UFC 89. It was Miller's seventh consecutive victory going back to April 2007.

SEVERAL BOUTS ADDED TO UFC 94 UNDERCARD

In addition to filling up its Jan. 17 debut event in Ireland, the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday also confirmed three more bouts for its Super Bowl weekend event in Las Vegas.

UFC 94 is headlined by a mega-fight between current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and lightweight champion B.J. Penn. The bout will be for the St. Pierre's 170-pound divisional title.

The bouts confirmed on Monday include Manny Gamburyan's return to action following a devastating 12-second knockout loss to Robert Emerson at UFC 87. He will face Thiago Tavares, who is likely fighting for his UFC life. Tavares has lost three of his four most recent bouts, including the last two.

Despite maintaining a 10-2 professional record, Jake O'Brien is likely in the same position as Tavares. He has lost his last two fights in the Octagon and needs desperately to get back on track. He faces no easy task in Christian Wellisch. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter lost his most recent bout as well, to Shane Carwin at UFC 84.

The other UFC 94 bout announced on Monday is between Ultimate Fighter alumnus Matt Arroyo and Dan Cramer, who will be making his Octagon debut.

Already announced for the Jan. 31 event is a light heavyweight showdown between No. 3 ranked Lyoto Machida and No. 10 ranked Thiago Silva, and another 205-pound bout pitting Stephan Bonnar against Jon Jones.

KANG'S DEBUT; UFC 93 FIGHT CARD FILLING UP

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday made official several of the rumored bouts for its Jan. 17 event in Dublin, Ireland. UFC 93 is already known to be headlined by Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson in a light heavyweight bout and Mark Coleman versus Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Part of the Monday's announcement is one of the more anticipated bouts on the fight card, Denis Kang facing Alan Belcher. Kang, one of the top middleweight fighters in recent years in Japan, will be making his Octagon debut at UFC 93. In Belcher, he faces a fighter with a mediocre 4-3 record in the UFC, but also a fighter that is known for the excitement he brings, win or lose.

Another fight that has fans salivating is the expected slugfest between Chris Lytle and Marcus Davis. These are two of the hardest hitting welterweights in the promotion, if not all of MMA, and both have wanted this fight for some time, even conspiring to call each other out after their respective bouts at UFC 89.

Other bouts confirmed by the UFC on Monday include: Antonio Mendes versus Andre Gusmao, Dennis Siver against Nate Mohr, Jeremy Horn and Rousimar Palhares, Tomasz Drwal versus Ivan Serati, and Tom Egan facing John Hathaway.

UFC 93 is already sold out. The full inventory of tickets was gone in a matter of weeks.

“This is our seventh successive sell-out in the British Isles since April of 2007," said UFC UK Division President Marshall Zelaznik. "We now hold records in six of the biggest arenas in all of Europe. We have the most dedicated and passionate fans in sport and we are thrilled to be bringing some of the biggest names in the sport to the Emerald Isle early in the New Year.”

MANGLER ON A MISSION; CAN TAPIA TAP TORRES?

Manny Tapia is a man on a mission.

The fighter that many refer to as "The Mangler” will face the toughest test of his career when he takes on WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres this Wednesday in Las Vegas. Fans wait in anticipation as this match-up has fight of the year potential. Tapia is ready and eagerly awaits the showdown between two of the best 135-pound fighters in the world.

“I feel good. I feel strong. I’m not thinking about it too much. I’m just keeping my head clear,” said the Chino, Calif. resident. “All the hard parts are already out of the way, that’s the training; the fight is just a bonus. The months of preparation, that’s the hard part.

“It means the world,” commented Tapia on his title shot. “I never thought I would be in this position. I got into MMA by accident; I started training seven years ago. Originally I just wanted to fight one fight and never fight again and here I am. I’m headlining in Vegas; it’s the world, it’s a dream.”

The former King of the Cage 135-pound champion signed with World Extreme Cagefighting last year and was victorious in his debut. Undefeated after 11 fights, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt under Javier Vasquez still had much to achieve in the growing sport of MMA.

“I was actually getting ready to retire; there was no money in it. I was done. I did not want to fight anymore,” revealed Tapia. “But then the WEC called and I went for it.”

He made his WEC debut against Brandon Foxworth. The Millenia Jiu-Jitsu fighter battered his opponent over two rounds, ending Foxworth’s 14-fight winning streak. Tapia showed fans that he has heavy hands and is capable of putting on exciting fights.

After an impressive entry into the WEC, the opportunity to contend for the 135-pound belt presented itself in September of last year. Unfortunately, a knee injured derailed his title shot against Chase Beebe, who would later relinquish his belt to Torres.

Tapia returned in February and won a controversial split decision over Antonio Banuelos. The fight was initially scored as a draw, although many spectators thought Tapia should have been declared the victor. After a mistake in tallying the scorecards, he was ruled as the winner via split decision.

The win put Tapia back in line for a shot at the title. Unfortunately, once again, an injury delayed the undefeated fighter’s opportunity at WEC gold.

“I messed my knee up three weeks before I fought Antonio. It was only bad for like two days,” said Tapia. “I started training for Miguel and my knee popped every day. Apparently my ACL wasn’t completely healed and I had a slightly torn meniscus.”

He had surgery to repair his ACL and has fully recovered. He recently finished the most intense training camp of his career. Having not competed in nearly 10 months, many fans wonder if Tapia will experience any ring rust in his return to the cage.

“If you really look at my record, I always fight within months. Ring rust is not a concern,” said Tapia confidently. “I always have one to two fights a year. I don’t think the layoff is going to affect me at all. I’m here to perform and put on a show.”

Not only is this championship fight one of the most anticipated of the year, it will also have a great significance for the Hispanic community.

“This is a big fight. Everybody is backing us up. They’re expecting a war. I know Miguel is going to bring it and I’m going to bring it too. You guys should be expecting a lot of fireworks… fight of the year. There’s going to be a lot of action. You’ve got two stubborn Mexicans going at it (laughs).”

The mental aspect of MMA is just as important as the physical. The sport has shown that even the most talented fighters can crumble under pressure. Tapia, as the challenger, is prepared and feels he has an advantage.

“To be honest with you, all the pressure is on him. I’m coming off a knee injury. I’ve never been so confident, so calm and so clear-headed coming into a fight. All I got to do is go out there and fight him and knock him out. I’m ready for it; I’ve got no pressure on me.

“I think it’s more mental than anything. I train the same for him as I did Antonio. I pushed everything a little bit harder. This is a big fight. Mentally you have to be prepared; physically I know I’m prepared. Mentally, the belt’s already at my gym. I’m ready to rock.”

Miguel Torres has proven that he is the man to beat at 135 pounds. The 27-year-old fighter sports an impressive record of 34-1 and is known for his grappling prowess. In a recent interview with MMAWeekly.com, Torres said, “I think with Manny, I'm going to go in and have fun and fight him on his feet. I think it's going to be a great opportunity for me to showcase my stand up. Manny hits hard. He likes to box. I'm going to go out there and showcase my stand up.

"Eventually the fight will get to the floor," added Torres. "We'll get into a clinch. He'll shoot on me, or I'll jump guard, or however it's going to work. The fight will get to the ground and I'm sure when it gets there I'll get to show my jiu-jitsu off. But before that I'll get to showcase my stand up."

Despite what critics perceive as an advantage for Torres, Tapia is self-assured in his training and welcomes the opportunity to test his skills on the mat.

“I’m confident. I train with one of the best submission guys in the world. I was originally a grappler; jiu-jitsu guy. People see two fights in the WEC and I’m standing up the whole time, everybody assumes I’m a boxer. I just like to put on a show. I don’t want to be a boring fighter. Miguel is smooth on the ground; he’s actually an exciting ground guy. Like I said, there’s going to be action everywhere.”

Manny Tapia is in for the biggest challenge of his career. To defeat Miguel Torres and claim the WEC belt would place him on top of the bantamweight food chain. The Mangler is on a mission. This Wednesday, fans will have to opportunity to see if Tapia’s dream comes to fruition.

“I want to thank everybody that has pushed me; my family and my fans, everybody who has faith in me. If it wasn’t for them, I would not be here. I’m going to fight with my heart and give it my best. I’ll lay it all on the line.”

FORMER CHAMP MCCULLOUGH VS. HICKS AT WEC 38

Former WEC lightweight champion “Razor” Rob McCullough will face off with contender Marcus Hicks at WEC 38 on Jan. 25 in San Diego, Calif., MMAWeekly.com has learned.

Sources close to McCullough’s camp confirmed the bout on Tuesday.

McCullough is coming off a hard-fought decision loss to Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at WEC 36 on Nov. 5, in a bout to determine the lightweight division’s next contender to champion Jamie Varner’s belt. Varner and Cerrone will square off on the San Diego card.

Hicks last fought in August at WEC 35, where he lost by devastating knockout to champ Varner. Hicks had won his previous three appearances in the WEC, beginning with WEC 27, without seeing a third round.

The card also features the return of Urijah Faber – after dropping his featherweight title to Mike Brown – as he will rematch former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver.

WEC's Vice President Peter Dropick said on Monday that while pay-per-view is still "in the works," he doesn't have a specific date yet. He indicated that WEC 38 would air live on Versus.

Jorge Masvidal signs with the Bellator Fighting Championships

Lightweight brawler Jorge Masvidal is the latest fighter to join the ranks of the Bellator Fighting Championships, which is scheduled to premiere in April on ESPN Deportes.

Masvidal is a heavy-handed striker that trains out of American Top Team in Florida. The Miami native is 16-3 during a pro MMA career that began in 2003. He has competed for major promotions such as BodogFIGHT, Strikeforce, and World Victory Road’s Sengoku.

Masvidal is 2-0 in his last two fights and 10-1 in his last eleven fights with his lone defeat during that span coming against Rodrigo Damm at Sengoku 3 this past June. Since the loss, Masvidal has recorded a TKO win over former IFL lightweight champion Ryan Schultz at Sengoku 5 and a unanimous decision victory over Seung Hwan Bang at Sengoku 6.

His most notable wins have come against current UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon at Absolute Fighting Championships 12 and former UFC and EliteXC lightweight title contender Yves Edwards during a Bodog event in July of 2007.

Masvidal will join Eddie Alvarez as the core of the promotion’s lightweight division. Despite both having competed at the same time for the now-defunct Bodog promotion, the two have never faced each other.

Bellator, which is Latin for Warrior, will hold eight-man tournaments at featherweight (145 pounds), lightweight (155 pounds), welterweight (170 pounds) and middleweight (185 pounds). The single elimination tournaments will be televised over the course of 12 weeks on Disney-owned ESPN Deportes, a Spanish language version of ESPN.

According to a recent press release, each tournament winner will be able to earn up to $175,000 for three wins. Fighters eliminated from tournament competition will also be well-compensated with opening round winners receiving $25,000, semi-finalists getting $50,000, and finalists netting $100,000.

In addition to Alvarez and Masvidal, FiveOuncesOfPain.com was the first to officially report the signing of welterweight prospect Lyman Good to the Bellator roster. This site was also the first to report the imminent signing of EliteXC bantamweight champion Wilson Reis to the upstar promotion. Bellator also reportedly has interest in former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho and standout Cuban Judoka Hector Lombard.

Kitaoka: Fighters have overestimated Gomi

Satoru Kitaoka, who will take on Takanori Gomi at "Sengoku no Ran" on January 4, participated in a public training on Monday, sparring with Tomoni "Windy Tomomi" Sunaba and Koji Oishi at P'S LAB Yokohama.
Afterwards, Sitaoka reiterated his confidence to the press that he'll walk away with the Sengoku lightweight belt.

"I think Gomi has been overestimated [by his opponents]," Kitaoka said, according to kamipro.com. "Fighters who fought him before just exaggerated his ability. I know it's not easy to win, but I'm for sure stronger than him regardless of his condition."

Sitaoka said he began training intensively for the fight last week, but unlike what other fighters typically say in pre-fight interviews, Sitaoka said he won't be training for the full five rounds.

"Our fight won't last to the fifth round," Sitaoka said. "It's not necessary for me to build up my stamina for this fight, because I have the confidence to win quickly by KO or submission."
