UFC Turns Down Offer To Co-Promote Fedor-Randy With M-1

MMANEWS.COM

The following is a quote from Randy Couture, which appeared in a blog entry from The Houston Chronicle's Steve Sievert:

"We got an official offer from M-1 to the UFC to do a co-promotion for the Couture-Emelianenko fight, and they (UFC) rejected that offer. Really, the only thing standing in the way for that fight right now is Dana and the UFC. Obviously, M-1 is happy to do a co-promotion like that. It only serves to help them. I think the UFC is looking at it the other way, and it's like why do we want to help out another organization? The fans want to see that fight. At some point, you have to put that first."

COMMISSIONER DISCUSSES IFL TITLE CHANGE-UPS

After an opening round of the Grand Prix tournament to crown the first ever champions in the organization, the International Fight League decided to pull original lightweight finalist Wagnney Fabiano out of his slot and place him in line for a newly created featherweight title. His previous opponent, Chris Horodecki, is now on his third opponent in as many weeks.

Commissioner Kurt Otto addressed the reasoning behind pulling Fabiano, who went undefeated at lightweight last season for the IFL, and creating a featherweight division for the Grand Prix finals.

“Wagnney is a lean guy. He’s a small guy,” said Otto. “He wished that we had a 145-pound weight class, but because we didn’t, he was forced to fight at (155 pounds). Granted, he was finishing everybody in under one minute, but still this is a situation where who knows? That fight could happen in ‘08 between Wagnney and Chris Horodecki if we want that to happen, if that makes sense.”

He expressed the promotion’s desire to crown a featherweight champion now as opposed to create a weight class for next season and then crown a titleholder during the season.

“Why would we have a guy fight for a belt, and let’s say he wins the 155-pound belt, why would we have him fight when he’s going to a different weight class and then establish a new title fight?” Otto stated. “Let’s do it now. Let’s establish it so we can start with a clean slate.”

Apparently, Fabiano had voiced his desire to drop to a lower weight and fight, but until now, the IFL has not had a 145-pound division.

“At the end of the day if Wagnney’s intentions were to fight at 145 because he knew we were switching to that format, (and) he said ‘guys I want to fight where I’m comfortable and these guys after they weigh in are 170 pounds, I’m still 144 pounds, it’s a little unfair for me. I mean I’m doing my best, but I would prefer being at 145.’”

Since Fabiano has been rescheduled to fight for the new featherweight championship, a replacement fighter has been hard pressed to stay healthy as the IFL is now on its third opponent for Horodecki to face for the lightweight title.

“First we went with Shad Lierley. He broke his toe. His bone went through the skin,” said Otto about the first replacement for the fight. “Then we had John Gunderson who had an existing hand injury. He assured us he was good to go, re-injured that hand during practice preparing for the fight. And then the next guy in line with our seeding was Ryan Schultz, who took the fight in a heartbeat and he’s healthy and ready to go.”

Chris Horodecki is now set to face Ryan Schultz for the first ever IFL lightweight title, while Wagnney Fabiano will square off against L.C. Davis for the featherweight championship at the finals for the IFL Grand Prix set for Dec. 29 in Connecticut.

ULTIMATE FIGHTER 6 SALARY BREAKDOWN

MMAWeekly has obtained the fighter salary information for “The Ultimate Fighter” season six finale, which took place on Dec. 8 at the Palms in Las Vegas.

The following figures are based on the fighter salary information that Zuffa, LLC (the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s parent company) are required by law to submit to the state athletic commissions, including the winners' bonuses.

Although MMA fighters do not have collective bargaining or a union, the fighters' salaries are still public record, just as with every other major sport in the United States. Any bonuses that Zuffa and the UFC also pay its fighters, but do not disclose to the athletic commissions (specifically, pay-per-view bonuses for the top pay-per-view main event fighters, which would not apply since this event was not on pay-per-view), are not included in the figures below.

In the listings below, " Main Event Fighters" are defined as fighters who compete in the main event of a show. "Main Card Fighters" are defined as fighters whose fights appear on the main card, but not in title fights or in the main event. "Preliminary Match Fighters" are defined as fighters whose matches take place before the live broadcast goes on the air, regardless of whether or not those matches end up airing on the TV broadcast.

ANTONIO ROGERIO NOGUEIRA RETURNS AT HCF

Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro” Nogueira (12-3) will make his return to mixed martial arts on Feb. 1 in Canada against Todd Gouwenberg at Hardcore Championship Fighting “Destiny.”

Nogueira was last seen being knocked out by Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in February at Pride's final show. He was considered one of the top light heavyweights in the world, but he has fallen on tough times, losing two out of his last three fights.

Gouwenberg (7-2) has fought in the BodogFight promotion as well as TKO.

Nogueira's career looked promising after scoring wins over quality opponents such as Kazushi Sakuraba, Kazuhiro Nakamura and Dan Henderson. He had been a star in the now defunct Pride Fighting Championship alongside his brother, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Unfortunately, his losses to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Sokoudjou, as well as his long layoff, has caused many mixed martial arts fans to write him off as a top ten light heavyweight. All of that can change now that he is refocused and ready to begin his comeback.

Also on the card are Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans John Alessio, Derrick Noble and Solomon Hutcherson as well as Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos and Mike Pyle.

The card is as follows:

Mayweather mulling move to MMA in deal with Cuban

Floyd Mayweather Jr., the world's No. 1 boxer, is strongly considering a revolutionary jump to mixed martial arts under a deal being discussed with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's adviser and best friend, told ESPN.com Friday night that the five-division world champion, who generated 3.25 million pay-per-view buys and more than $200 million in revenue in two mega fights in 2007, came away from a Thursday meeting with Cuban giving serious thought to taking his game and considerable drawing power to MMA.

"It's definitely something he is interested in, and when Floyd makes his move, obviously it's going to be a mega event," Ellerbe said. "We don't have a timetable. Floyd is taking some time off, but Floyd understands what is involved. You have to take time to go out and understand what you're getting involved in, and he's ready to do that. But it's something he's definitely interested in doing.

"Mark Cuban is a very successful business man and has some very, very successful business ventures that we've discussed. We're looking to do a lot of business with Mark. He's a great guy, and we had a great meeting. Doing an MMA event with him is most definitely something we are looking at, among many things we are looking at doing with Mark Cuban."

Mayweather's interest in participating in an MMA event was sparked after he struck up a friendship with Cuban during their participation this season as contestants on the ABC reality series "Dancing with the Stars."

Cuban was Mayweather's guest at the fight and even carried two of his championship belts into the ring before he knocked out England's Ricky Hatton to retain the welterweight world championship Dec. 8 in Las Vegas.

Mayweather and Cuban were together again Thursday in Las Vegas, where they met to discuss various business ventures, including Mayweather participating in an MMA event.

A few boxers, such as former heavyweight contenders Ray Mercer and Frans Botha, have attempted to compete in mixed martial arts with little success. Mayweather's entrance would bring it to another level, especially at a time when the sports have been pitted against each other by fans and media -- MMA as the hotshot newcomer trying to overtake the century-old, more traditional sweet science.

One of Cuban's many business interests is ownership of HDNet Fights, a fledgling mixed martial arts promotional company whose bouts are aired on Cuban's HDNet. Cuban promoted his second event Dec. 15 in Dallas.

"Floyd is considering fighting with HDNet Fights," Cuban told ESPN.com. "We are going to let him visit some gyms to talk to some folks about what it would take to learn. He knows it won't be easy. But he is getting involved with MMA and HDNet Fights one way or another. He is pumped about it. He wants to go on to the next big thing. Floyd is a brilliant marketer. He follows the money."

Indeed, Mayweather, like Cuban, knows how to make money. Mayweather, 30, won the year's two biggest fights, a decision against Oscar De La Hoya in May in a fight that shattered all boxing revenue records and a 10th-round knockout of Hatton that did 850,000 buys and $47 million in television revenue on HBO PPV.

Mayweather-De La Hoya, with 2.4 million buys, set the all-time PPV record. Mayweather-Hatton was the biggest PPV fight in history not involving De La Hoya or heavyweights Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

Mayweather earned about $50 million for the two fights.

"If I said there's a guaranteed $30 million payday, Floyd would be lacing them up," Cuban said, optimistic that Mayweather would eventually participate in an MMA match. "If not, I could see him working to train and develop and invest in MMA fighters, knowing the upside. He can teach them how to be a better boxer and add to their other skills."

After each of his last three fights, Mayweather has talked about retirement or, at least, an extended break. Ellerbe said Mayweather is on vacation now but that when he returns, they'll discuss the prospect of an MMA bout in more detail.

"Floyd is about taking on challenges," Ellerbe said. "This ain't some kind of prank. That is one of many things we've talked about with Mark. Floyd would have to take time to really understand it, but it is most definitely something he is interested in."

SPOTLIGHT ON CANADA: GSP'S SUPER CAMP

ST-PIERRE LOOKING SHARP IN TRAINING

MMAWeekly.com was on location to observe a traditional Friday sparring session at the Tri-Star gym in Montreal, Canada. On hand were Georges St-Pierre, Rashad Evans, Denis Kang, Patrick Cote, Jonathan Goulet, David Loiseau, David Pariseau, Jacob MacDonald, Steve Claveau and more.

Coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Van Arsdale were also there to supervise the proceedings. From an on-lookers vantage point, it seemed clear that Jackson is St-Pierre’s closest advisor these days.

The initial pairings as directed by Coach Jackson included Evans versus St-Pierre and Loiseau versus Kang. The fighters began by working mainly their striking and occasionally shooting in for a takedown attempt. Every five minutes they would take a short rest and find a new partner for the next round.

Of note, not one fighter (including Evans) was able to take down St-Pierre and it definitely wasn’t because of a lack of effort. On the other hand, it looked as though St-Pierre took everyone down almost at will with probably a 95% success ratio.

St-Pierre’s standup also looked crisp. Although he doesn't throw a lot of combinations, the strikes he does throw land clean and often. Perhaps one minor note of criticism is that his feet are not always grounded thus reducing the amount of weight behind his strikes.

There was also some speculation around the gym, although St-Pierre did not confirm this, that he had actually been anticipating the possibility of Serra pulling out of the fight and thus had been going through his regular intensive training rituals for 12 weeks leading up to the fight. This is interesting because his Dec. 29 opponent, Matt Hughes has repeatedly stated that one of the factors he chose to take the fight was that because he felt St-Pierre may not have had sufficient time to prepare. If what St-Pierre’s teammates are saying is true, Hughes may be in for a bit of a surprise.

CATCHING UP WITH DENIS KANG

MMAWeekly.com also caught up with Denis Kang after the sparring session was over. Kang mentioned that if he had a choice, he would be living and training right now with American Top Team in Florida. Unfortunately, due to some visa issues, he may be unable to enter back into the United States for some time. Therefore, he decided to visit with St-Pierre for a few weeks before heading back to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he will remain until his visa issues get sorted out.

He was expecting to fight on the K-1 Dynamite card this New Year’s Eve, but only recently learned that it was not to be. He speculates that his next fight will be on a K-1 Hero’s event scheduled for March.

Asked about the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Kang commented that he and his manager did everything they could to seal a deal with the UFC. They waited on an offer, which they received and were pretty happy with. K-1, however, showed how badly they wanted Kang by tripling the UFC offer. He went back to the UFC to give them an opportunity to match, but it just wasn’t in the cards. Kang is currently on a multiple fight contract, which likely precludes him from fighting in the UFC for at least the next year.

Asked about his thoughts on the upcoming Hughes/St-Pierre fight at UFC 79, Kang responded, “I think Georges is looking really sharp right now. I just don't see what Hughes can do to him this time around. It will probably be a lot like their last fight."

BIG JOHN COMES TO CANADA

Highly regarded MMA referee Big John McCarthy was in attendance for TKO 31 as he and Mauro Ranallo worked the broadcast booth for the Fight Network’s pay-per-view scheduled to air on Canadian television in January.

At the TKO weigh-ins, it was almost comical to see the reaction amongst fans and fighters to McCarthy’s presence. There were more people (including fighters) lined up to talk to him and take a picture with him than any of the athletes actually competing on the TKO card. It was definitely an impressive testament to the respect everyone in the MMA community has for the legendary UFC referee, turned full time broadcaster.

His good friend and fellow referee Yves Lavigne remarked, “You ain’t seen nothing yet! Wait until you get a load of the things Big John has planned. It’s going to be really big and it’s going to be great for the sport!”

“It’s been great being here,” remarked McCarthy. “Everyone seems so nice and I’m really impressed by the TKO event. Merci Beaucoup Montreal!”

HARDCORE CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT CHURNS OUT AN IMPRESSIVE CARD

No one can deny that Hardcore Championship Fighting is certainly doing its best to put on one heck of show. The next event may be its most impressive to date, featuring the Canadian debut of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira:

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Todd Gouwenberg
Gegard Mousasi vs. Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos
Thomas Schulte vs. Garett Davis
John Alessio vs. Derrick Noble
Damir Mirenic vs. Mike Pyle
Andrew Buckland vs. Dan Chambers
Solomon Hutcherson vs. Amir Rahnavardi
Myles Merola vs. Ariel Sexton
Tim Hague vs. Miodrag Petkovic
Nabil Khatib vs. Lucas Rota
Babian Cortez vs. Juan Barrantes

RORY MARKHAM RETURNS FOR IFL GP FINALS

During the first two seasons of the International Fight League there were few fighters as successful as Quad Cities Silverbacks’ welterweight Rory Markham.

Sporting a 4-1 record in the promotion (12-3 overall), it appeared he would continue to be one of his team’s key factors towards three-peating as IFL Champions… then injuries struck.

Only able to participate in two of the Silverbacks’ team battles, Markham was able to overcome injuries to win both of his bouts, but he was unable to help the team’s season as they fell short of their goal, losing in the IFL Finals to the New York Pitbulls. A match-up he missed due to a broken hand.

Four months after his last bout, 100% healthy and ready to get his career back in full swing, Markham makes his return in a featured bout at the promotion’s individual Grand Prix Finals on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Mohegan Sun.

“I’ve been training, trying to stay sharp, pretty much working on my wrestling, my ground and trying to be more well-rounded,” he said of his time off. “Pat’s (Miletich) always been kind of saying to me that in order to get to the next level, that’s what it’s going to take, being as well-versed in all those other areas of my game.

“My stand-up is pretty sharp. It could always get better, but I just needed to fill my gaps. If I can decide where the fight goes with my wrestling I think that’s really going to be the deal breaker.”

Of course, should all else fail, there is always his bread and butter, the striking game.

“I’m always going to go for the knockout and give the fans what they want,” exclaimed Markham. “I aim to do that because I appreciate the entertainment value in our product, and I don’t like to see a fan go home and say they had a boring night.

“If anything, I think I can give that excitement factor, so I’m always going to go for that knockout. If I get taken out of my game plan, I want to make sure that I have the weapons to at least nullify my opponent’s game.”

As Markham points out, it’s the work he’s put into preparing for this fight that makes the opposition not much of a concern for him on Saturday night.

“To be honest, I don’t know much about my new guy, but I can say this much, I’ve been training for this as if I were taking a title fight,” he said. “In the back of my head, I convinced myself that either (Delson) Heleno or (Jay) Hieron was going to go out with injury and that I was going to slip in there.

“So that kind of fueled my training, is that I kept convincing myself that I had to get moving so I could get a shot at a title. I love these (training) camps because I truly feel I can step into the ring a better fighter.”

Much of the reason for Markham’s excitement has to do with the fact that he’s actually healthy enough to fight again after an injury-plagued 2007 season.

He feels that it’s because of the break-neck schedule the IFL had previously employed that caused the high injury rates for many fighters this season, and the changes the promotion is due to make next year is something that he is very much anticipating.

“You just kind of have to roll with it,” stated Markham. “Especially with the IFL in the previous year with the frequency of fights, injuries you could see were a problem all across the board.

“I think now with the new format, having three or four fights a year, which is on par with other MMA organizations is the correct adjustment, by making us fight less frequently. It’s going to help the longevity for all of us across the board.”

Which leads to his reassertion that even with some of the turmoil the promotion has experienced lately, he will be back with them in 2008.

“I’ve got one more year on my contract,” said Markham. “I like the fact that I’ve gotten in on the ground (floor). I like that I’ve been in since the inaugural event, since the inception of the IFL. I was in it with Pat and our original Silverbacks team.

“So, I would love to get my price up and fight hard in ’08 and make some cash, and hope it could be with the IFL, because I like the idea of being in a company that’s growing up.”

But before then, Markham has his scheduled fight on Dec. 29 to get through first, and it’s a fight he feels will be one for the fans.

“To the fans, as always, I appreciate the support,” he stated. “I love meeting every individual that appreciates my fights, and Dec. 29 is going to be no different. I’m going to go out there and put on a show for the fans; with me at least I can guarantee they will get their money’s worth.

“We’ll be on HDNet, live from the Mohegan Sun, it’s a great venue and I don’t think there’s a bad seat in the house. I’d like to thank my sponsors Cytosport, Tapout, Fairtex, Sandy Bowman and Ecko.”

Update: Calvancante-Aoki to be Postponed

Hyped as one of the better fights scheduled for a busy New Year's Eve weekend, Shinya Aoki (Pictures) versus Gesias Calvancante (Pictures) will not come to fruition.

Calvancante's father confirmed the news to Sherdog.com's Denis Martins on Saturday that his son's fight with Aoki will be postponed to March.

Fight Entertainment Group, which holds Calvancante under contract and apparently made the lightweight available for the Yarennoka! card, is expected to announce the make-up date at a press conference on Dec. 30.

Why Yarennoka! -- a co-promotion on Dec. 31 between former PRIDE FC employees and upstart M-1 Global airing live in the U.S. on HDNet starting at 6 a.m. EST -- lost its most interesting match is still in question.

Rumored to be coming off knee and nose surgeries in Brazil, the 23-year-old Calvancante, ranked third at 155 pounds by Sherdog.com, had not trained at all for this fight with his American Top Team camp in Florida, a source said.

On Dec. 5 "JZ" discussed the pending fight with Sherdog.com, and just three days ago Aoki held an open workout for media in Tokyo, where he spoke about the anticipated fight.

Questioned Friday about the status of the bout, which was officially announced at a press conference in Tokyo on Nov. 28, M-1 Global CEO Monte Cox stated that if the fight is off, no one had informed him.

"As far as I know the fight is still happening, and it is one I am really looking forward to seeing," Cox told Sherdog.com.

In mid-September Calvancante (14-1-1), considered among the fastest ascending stars in the division, won his second consecutive K-1 HERO'S lightweight tournament crown.

Meanwhile Aoki, 11-2-0, is a slick 24-year-old grappler who has run off eight consecutive victories, including an impressive gogoplata submission over former Shooto champion Joachim Hansen (Pictures) last New Year's Eve.

Potential deal between UFC and CBS could be stalled

Adam Swift of MMAPayout.com writes the following about a potential deal between the UFC and CBS to televise a portion of UFC 81 on February 2:

For whatever it's worth, based on conversations between MMAPayout.com and multiple sources within the industry, there seems to be a growing belief that the UFC-CBS deal has stalled or fallen apart altogether. At the very least there seems to be an emerging consensus that the deal won't be in place in time for UFC 81 as has been rumored.

Swift is quick to clarify that his sources are not direct parties to the negotiations and that we should take it for what it's worth.

However, where there's smoke, there is fire. Several sources reported earlier this month that a deal was either imminent or was on the verge of being finalized. Well, the month is almost over and there's been no hint of an announcement.

I believe Tito would try to stand with him and realize he has to take him down and would lay and pray kimbo to a boring decision. But if tito strongly feels he could stand with him I see a Ko from kimbo over tito. I am liking Wanderleis chances because he is more well rounded than chuck and he is taking this fight very seriously training like a animal. This coming week you should check out ufc all acess: Wanderlei silva which will be on spike and MTV2. I have seen training footage of wanderlei and you can tell he is detemine to win. What cable provider do you have?

Anderson Silva Has Door Open For Shogun and Ninja

Although in Curitiba , the middleweight champion of the UFC, Anderson Silva, became aware through the TATAME team on the departure of his former teammates Mauricio Shogun and Murilo Ninja from Chute Boxe. "I think that the team is without a reference. They are wrong and are paying for the mistake. A big team is made with good basis and they lost it, then I think it´s difficult for Chute Boxe to be back to the top. The team has gone through a similar situation when I, Pele, Assuério Silva, the master Diógenes, Sergio Cunha and many others left the team, and they recuperated.

I think now they need to review the concepts of them, see where they wrong and change" said Anderson, who left the door open for Shogun and Ninja.

"I never had anything against them and against anyone on the team. By the time I left I, they also were going out, but for some reason they stayed. Me and Ninja appeared together in Mecca and if I can help them, I will help. Though I find that they do not need my help, the door is open for them if they seek me", assured Anderson Silva.

Frank Shamrock Stirring The Pot

Pro Elite held a live chat session with former UFC Middleweight Champion Frank Shamrock this past Thursday on their official website. The transcript to the chat is here.

Let’s just say that some things that Shamrock said were pretty interesting. Here’s a summary and some thoughts on some of the more notable things that Frank had to say.

- He plans to fight for 10 more years. It will add up to a total of 21 fights and he will fight once every six months. I can guarantee that this won’t happen. Tomorrow will already be six months since he fought Baroni for starters.

- He says that he and Ken are planning to fight in 2009. His reasoning behind wanting to fight Ken is the amount of “bullying” his brother put on him when they were younger. Something tells me that while it’ll be fun to watch, this fight will come off more like a freak show to the mainstream media.
- Shamrock made another “Josh Thomson is gay” claim. I’m not going to touch on that one since it’s been reported that Thomson is preparing to take legal action against Frank.

- Notable fighters that he expressed interest in fighting: Renzo Gracie, Cung Le, Tito Ortiz, Robbie Lawler, Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Matt Lindland, Kazushi Sakuraba, and his brother Ken Shamrock. He also stated that he would easily defeat both Brock Lesnar and Kimbo Slice. It’s interesting because although they both out-weigh Frank by 30-60 pounds, their lack of experience would most likely give Frank a huge advantage.

YEAH I SEE IT THE SAME WAY WITH KIMBO AND TITO. I THINK KIMBO MIGHT BE TO MUCH FOR TITO THOUGH EVEN WITH TITOS GROUND SKILLS. BUT IT COULD POSSIBLY END UP LIKE HOUSTON ALEXANDERS LAST FIGHT. BUT THAT WAS CLEAR HOUSTON HAD NO GROUND TRAINING.

I KNOW WANDERLEI HAS THE ODDS IN HIS CORNER BUT IF HE TRYS TO RUSH IN LIKE A SAVAGE ON CHUCK I THINK CHUCK WILL KNOCK HIM OUT. EITHER WAY I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THOSE TWO TO FIGHT FOR A LONG TIME. I DONT CARE IF THEY WERE NINETY YEARS OLD WITH PISS BAGS IT STILL WOULD BE WORTH MY TIME.

I HAVE COMCAST CABLE AND ITS GONNA REALLY PISS ME OFF IF I DONT GET TO PEEP THE HDNET FIGHTS. SO IF YOU GOT ANY INFO OR LINKS TO PEEP THE FIGHTS LET ME KNOW.

There was a report in the print edition of The Wrestling Observer last week and another report on 411Mania.com that EliteXC is considering a super heavyweight/heavyweight four-man eliminator that would feature Kimbo, Tank Abbott, Bob Sapp, and Butterbean. Is there any truth to those rumors?

Wow that would be a fucking brawl. I hope they can make that happen.

As much I don't like Tito for talking shit on Kimbo, he would beat Kimbo pretty easily. Kimbo is a good striker but theres no way in hell he would be able to stuff Tito's take downs. LNP his way to a decision. Also I'd love to see Mayweather get his face fucking smashed by Uriah Faber.
