Joe Lauzon thinks Keith Florian was a ‘punk’

“We saw (Keith Florian) in the hotel that night and he was being a complete punk in the elevator. It was totally unnecessary. I had told Kenny that I definitely wanted to go up there and work out with him at Sityodtong (gym in Somerville), but I’m really rethinking that. I’m definitely not going to do that for the way his brother acted. It was just poor taste all around.”

Joe Lauzon details an encounter he had with Keith Florian — the brother of Kenny Florian — after the UFC Fight Night 13 event in Broomfield, Colo., last month. “Ken Flo” defeated “J Lau” in the main event of the evening via second round technical knockout. Apparently Keith felt the need to rub it in afterwards.

Chuck Liddell Wanted To Fight At UFC 85 Despite Injury

During a recent interview with ESPN The Magazine, former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell confirmed that he still wanted to fight Rashad Evans at UFC 85 in June despite a torn hamstring. Below is a direct quote made by Liddell during the interview:

"I was going to fight, too. But then [Dana] White called and said to forget it, to heal up and come back 100 percent."

UFC champions Nogueira, Silva partnering on fight academy in downtown Miami

Sharon Robb | Sports Columnist
May 4, 2008

Nogueira and Silva Mixed Martial Arts Academy is the first academy headed by two current UFC champions. The pair plan on training together, giving seminars and teaching adults and children of all ages and ability levels.

Like they do in Brazil, the academy's pro fighters will also work with underprivileged children, ages 4-14. In Brazil, Nogueira works with 160 kids, he said.

Nogueira, 31, is the only man to hold the UFC and PRIDE Fighting heavyweight titles simultaneously. At UFC 81 he knocked off 6-foot-8, 260-pound slugger Tim Sylvia for the title. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt took Sylvia down and moments later forced him to submit using a deep guillotine anaconda choke.

Silva has beaten everyone in the UFC middleweight division. Silva, a dangerous striker, showed off his jiu-jitsu at UFC 82, submitting former PRIDE middleweight champion Dan Henderson with a rear naked choke in the second round. It was Silva's third defense of his UFC belt. Silva hasn't been forced to a third round since 2004.

The longtime friends and training partners, who already have academies in Brazil and Dallas, said the timing is right to come to South Florida.

"The sport is growing here now and is a hotbed for mixed martial arts. … Big things are growing here," Nogueira said. "This has been a dream to open an academy together here.

"This is a good area and the weather is very good. In Miami, you can walk in the street and see people. It's like Brazil. This is the right time and right place. This is the biggest time right now, in America, for this sport."

The 15,000 square-foot academy includes a training cage and is located inside Johnny Rock Fitness at 90 SW 8th St., off Brickell Avenue. Nogueira, whose mother and sister live in Pompano Beach, will call Miami his second home. He plans on buying a condo close to the academy where he also plans to train for his fights.

Nogueira said his next fight may be in August against an opponent still to be determined.

The academy's grand opening and open house is set for May 16. Nogueira, Silva and other instructors will conduct a seminar, What It Takes To Be A Champion on May 17 at 2 p.m.

South American champion Daniel Valverde, a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo will also be part of the coaching staff. Valverde has been working with Nogueira at The Fight Club. Nogueira's twin brother, Antonio Rogerio, is expected to join him next summer. For information call Juliana Nogueira at 305-200-2789.

UFC targets show for Latino audience

Inside a warehouse that sits in a rugged area near the border between Los Angeles and Glendale, filming was underway in the Ultimate Fighting Championship's most vigorous effort yet to tap a wider Spanish-speaking audience.

"El Octagono," an hourlong Saturday night series set to debut Saturday on the cable network Galavision, will include fighter interviews, highlights and mixed martial arts education for Latino fight fans who traditionally have flocked to boxing.

"It's important to get those fans," UFC lightweight Kenny Florian said. "They're so passionate about boxing, and this is very much in line with what they like about combat. We know they support Latino fighters in boxing, and now it's just about giving them more awareness about our sport, and showing them how exciting our fights are. Awareness has been the main obstacle."

Florian, 31, is a fluent Spanish speaker from Boston whose parents are from Peru. He's preparing for an August fight at UFC 87 in Minneapolis against Roger Huerta, 24, a Latino best known for being the first UFC fighter featured on a Sports Illustrated cover.

"Once Hispanics see there's plenty of fighters they can relate to, guys who speak the same language, that'll be a big plus," Huerta (22-1-1) said. "It's like a brotherhood, they can relate to us."

The Florian-Huerta winner will earn a lightweight title shot against the winner of next month's B.J. Penn-Sean Sherk title fight, and the UFC already claims a Spanish-speaking champion in Brazilian heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

"I love boxing for what it is, but you see so many different things, and a higher pace, in UFC fights," Huerta said. "You can see punching, wrestling, submissions. If boxing is like shooting a 9-millimeter, imagine adding in a bazooka and machine gun. With the more weapons we have, the interest will come around. The key thing is just to educate."

Until now, the UFC has devoted most of its energy attracting the 18-to-34-year-old (usually white) males, who routinely pack arenas and purchase monthly pay-per-view cards headlined in recent years by Mohawk-wearing Chuck Liddell and veteran fighter Randy Couture, both white.

Meanwhile, veteran boxing promoter Bob Arum is making a bundle of cash on his pay-per-view "Latin Fury" cards, featuring popular Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Jorge Arce.

Arum stages the fights in Mexico, pocketing live gate and Mexican television rights revenue. He had 80,000 pay-per-view buys in the U.S. on his most recent "Latin Fury" card, Top Rank spokesman Bill Caplan said, netting more than $17 per purchase.

"The reason Hispanic fans buy into it is the Hispanic fighters," Arum said. "Brazilian is not Hispanic. Hispanic means Mexican, and how many good Mexicans, or Mexican Americans, do they have? Without that, there's no interest. None.

"If you develop the Mexican stars, you can attract the younger Latino audience, but it seems as if that's a long way from happening, and you don't want to spend so much time on it that you lose your core audience: white, male, tattooed. . . ."

Arum said an endeavor like "El Octagono" fuels speculation that interest in UFC has reached a plateau.

The company doesn't release revenue figures, such as pay-per-view buys.

"If this sport was so booming, this wouldn't be happening," Arum said.

Yet, UFC officials say they are only seeking to widen the mixed martial arts audience by pointing Latino viewers to "El Octagono" and its profiles of welterweight contender Diego Sanchez of San Diego and heavyweights Eddie Sanchez and Gabriel Gonzaga.

"I believe boxing fans will enjoy MMA more," said Gonzaga, who after stunning respected heavyweight Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic with a vicious head kick last year, was defeated by Couture in a heavyweight title fight in August. "It's a more interesting fight, and the underdog wins more often. You don't go in knowing what's going to happen.

"The Latin fighter, as boxing has shown, has a lot of heart. And sometimes in MMA, heart can beat a better fighter."

Eddie Sanchez, who resides in Encinitas, said his manager has talked to UFC President Dana White about making a promotional trip to Mexico City, or Tijuana, to hype a yet unscheduled UFC card in Mexico.

"The fiery blood, the never-give-up-till-I-die attitude you see in Mexican fighters is the way I fight," Sanchez said. "We'll get a UFC show into Mexico, and it'll be huge. It's long overdue."

First impressions crucial to EliteXC's debut on CBS

Click-2-Listen
By Dan Stupp

Contributing Writer

Monday, May 05, 2008

Later this month, EliteXC — arguably the second top mixed-martial-arts promotion behind the Ultimate Fighting Championship — will beat all its competition to live U.S. network television when it hosts its May 31 event on CBS.

However, the landmark event isn't void of controversy.

."

In addition to the lack of internal support, CBS and EliteXC could face challenges in marketing its fighters. Headliner Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson surely looks menacing, but he's actually a well-spoken and respectful individual. However, his background as an Internet backyard brawler and bodyguard for a pornography company could present challenges.

So, too, could a fight between Gina Carano and Kaitlin Young. The two talented and attractive fighters could either legitimize women's MMA — or turn off traditionalists who can't stand seeing women punching each other.

Finally, EliteXC's financial troubles are no secret, and the organization is (literally) banking on the debut show being a hit. Low ratings or a sub-par event could spell disaster.

Regardless, though, "EliteXC: PRIMETIME" will be the most-watched MMA event in North American history. Converting even a fraction of the casual viewers to fanatics could mean big things for an organization in desperate need of a push

Aoki's Grand Prix Bout Postponed

Monday, May 05, 2008
by Tim Leidecker

Instead of replacing Shinya Aoki (Pictures) in the Dream lightweight grand prix, the promotion announced Monday that Aoki's quarterfinal bout against Katsuhiko Nagata (Pictures), scheduled for May 11, has been postponed until June 15.

The delay is due to the numerous injuries Aoki sustained in his two recent bouts against Gesias Calvancante (Pictures). According to Aoki's family doctor, the 24-year-old grappling prodigy suffered a concussion of the cervical vertebra in his March 15 meeting with the Brazilian and picked up a severely bruised rib in the second battle on April 29.

"Because of the seriousness of his injuries, I have recommended Aoki not to fight again in the next 40 days," the doctor said. "He has torn some cartilage in his costal area, which prevents him from breathing properly. Aoki has to take two weeks off to fully heal up and as a result cannot compete on May 11."

The Japanese judoka, who is famous for wearing colorful spandex pants in his fights, apologized to fans.

"I'm sorry that I won't be able to fight on May 11, but I can promise that I will be back with a vengeance June 15," Aoki said. "I will be 100 percent motivated when I step into the ring and I will make good for cancelling the May fight."

Dream event producer Keiichi Sasahara discussed how the postponement would affect the tournament: "Originally we were aiming to have three straight shows for each grand prix: the round of the last sixteen, the quarterfinals, and the semifinals and finals in one event. With the many backlog fights, this format has unfortunately been broken up, but we prefer to stick with the original participants instead of giving out to many sponsor nominations."

Sasahara also stated Monday that he wants to keep Hayato Sakurai (Pictures) as one of the challengers for the newly created Dream welterweight championship to be fought out this summer, even though "Mach" suffered a first-round submission loss Saturday in Shooto at the hands of Frenchman David Baron (Pictures)

Match between Haselrig and Vetell for May 31 EliteXC undercard could be secured today

By: Sam Caplan Category: Carlton Haselrig, Bryan Vetell

s as though an opponent for six-time NCAA Division I & II wrestling champion and former NFL All-Pro offensive lineman Carlton Haselrig is on the verge of being secured.

Multiple sources have informed FiveOuncesOfPain.com that a proposed match between Haselrig and former IFL heavyweight Bryan Vetell to take place during the undercard of EliteXC’s first-ever CBS telecast on May 31 could be finalized by the close of business on Monday.

Verbal commitments were secured from the camps of both fighters over the weekend and barring a setback, contracts are expected to be signed off on and returned sometime today.

The 42-year old Haselrig recently made his MMA debut when he defeated another former IFL heavyweight, Shane Ott. Haselrig recorded a TKO victory over Ott at 4:09 of round 1 during a Battle Cage Xtreme card held on April 19 in Atlantic City, N.J.

Vetell, who trains out of Renzo Gracie’s Jiu Jitsu Academy, is 4-3 according to Sherdog.com’s fight finder. His most recent bout was on April 11 during YAMMA Pit Fighting’s inaugural card that took place in Atlantic City. Vetell was victorious in the bout, recording a unanimous decision over Antwain Britt in a reserve match for YAMMA’s single night, eight-man heavyweight tournament.

EliteXC officials originally had planned to match Haselrig, a former member of the NFL’s New York Jets, against former New York Giants offensive lineman and current heavyweight prospect Bobby Jones. However, the proposed Jets vs. Giants concept was thrwarted after Jones was unable to accept the fight due to a neck injury. Former Giants fullback Jarrod Bunch was approached as a possible replacement but declined the bout.

The seven-bout undercard will be televised free of charge on ProElite.com. The main portion of EliteXC’s May 31 show will be televised on CBS starting at 9 p.m. ET.

Roger Gracie vs. Yuki Kondo announced for Sengoku II

Roger Gracie (1-0), a longtime part of the Sengoku II fight card, finally has an opponent for the May 18 event: Yuki Kondo (48-21-6).

The World Victory Road organization made the announcement on its official website earlier today.

The event takes place at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan. A bout between heavyweights Josh Barnett and Jeff Monson headlines the event.

Gracie, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and the 2005 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship winner, has dominated countless BJJ competitions over the years. However, he'll fight for just second time in a professional MMA bout. The 26-year-old's lone victory was a December 2006 first-round submission of veteran Ron Waterman at a BodogFIGHT event.

He'll now take on 32-year-old Kondo, a three-time King of Pancrase with more than 70 professional bouts. The longtime Pancrase fighter has also competed in PRIDE and faced many of the sport's top stars, including Dan Henderson, Wanderlei Silva, Josh Barnett, Paulo Filho and Akihiro Gono. However, he's won just two of his past five fights -- and five of his past 13.

The latest rumored card for the event now includes:

Josh Barnett vs. Jeff Monson
Roger Gracie vs. Yuki Kondo
Jorge Santiago vs. Yuki Sasaki
Kwang Hee Lee vs. Eiji Mitsuoka
Satoru Kitaoka vs. Ian Schaffa
Yoshihiro Nakao vs. Jim York
Dan Hornbuckle vs. Mike Pyle
Ryo Kawamura vs. Kevin Randleman

Nam Phan vs Billy Evangelista Strikeforce fight in the works for June 27 (Exclusive)

Nam Phan (14-4) and Billy Evangelista (6-0) will finally get their chance to fight each other Friday, June 27 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on the Strikeforce 10: “Melendez vs. Thomson” card.

The two lightweights were originally scheduled to fight last November at Strikeforce: “Four Men Enter, One Man Survives,” but it was scrapped because of injuries.

The 25-year-old Phan is a scrappy lightweight with blazing speed and knockout power. He’s won nine of his last 11 fights, including five technical knockouts and three submissions.

His last fight under the Strikeforce banner was a unanimous decision loss to now number one lightweight contender Josh “The Punk” Thomson in December of 2006 at Strikeforce: “Triple Threat.” It was a great fight (videohttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/24417157#24417157)— perhaps the fight of the night; however, in the end Phan seemed just too small for Thomson and “The Punk” controlled most of the fight.

Evangelista is coming off a third round knockout of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 6 alum — and self proclaimed street fighting legend — Marlon Sims at Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Le” in March. Before that he won a split decision at the Playboy mansion over Clint Coronel last September.

He is undefeated (3-0) fighting for Strikeforce and is among the promotion’s top young prospects. Despite his wrestling and jiu jitsu background, he has a decent stand up game. Four of his six wins have been by technical knockout.

This should be an electrifying fight. Both of these guys bring it every time out and are always looking to end fights on their feet.

Of course, the main event for this show is a lightweight title fight between champion Gilbert Melendez and Josh “The Punk” Thomson.

MMA Quick Quote: Nick Diaz might need a doctors note for round two with KJ Noons
“I think that’s ridiculous. When you have the title you don’t, you can’t dodge anybody and why would the Diaz camp think I am dodging him? I gave him plastic surgery, on his face. That’s a fact. As long as he can get a doctor’s note, sure whatever, round two.”

– EliteXC Lightweight Champion KJ Noons responds to Nick Diaz’s camp claiming he’s ducking him by not giving him an immediate rematch for the belt in a recent interview with MMAYou.com to respond. Noons is defending his title for the first time against Yves Edwards on June 14 in Honolulu, Hawaii instead. That fight will air on Showtime.

Thierry Sokoudjou's plan against nakamura

"My mistake was taking the Machida fight too serious, you know." "I'd been out too long, nearly eight months, and I'd put too much pressure on myself.
"I know Nakamura will come out bullrushing me, so I'll keep my hands on his face and punch the crap out of him." "I've seen a few of his tapes, he's a tough guy. Always goes forward, and never stops. It'll be an interesting fight."

"I think I've always been mentally prepared, but usually I go into a fight just as if I'm going to practice . . . I go there, play, and go home. In the Machida fight I was going in to fight--and that's a mistake. I've never let that happen to myself before. So this time I'm going in just to play... and it's just a fight, and I'll go home with a win. No pressure, no nothing. Play time."

COUTURE AND REDBELT EXPOSES HOLLYWOOD TO MMA

Boxing films have long been a classic part of American movie history. With classics such as “Rocky” and “Raging Bull”, the sport of boxing has long standing ties with Hollywood.

Mixed martial arts is now starting to see producers and directors point their attention at the hugely popular sport for inspiration in film.

“Redbelt” is one of the first big budget films produced, that revolves around the sport of mixed martial arts. Written and directed by legendary filmmaker David Mamet, the film focuses around a Jiu-Jitsu instructor who is pulled into the fight world after a series of unfortunate circumstances.

The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, who recently co-starred alongside Academy Award winner Denzel Washington in the film “American Gangster”, plays the lead role of Mike Terry, a martial arts instructor who has pursued an honorable life as a teacher, never using his skills for competitive gain.

Many familiar faces from the world of mixed martial arts also star in the film, led by current UFC heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, who says the film is rooted firmly in the traditions of MMA.

“It’s very grounded in jiu-jitsu and you’re not just going to go see a fight movie. It’s not a fight movie,” said Couture in a recent interview with MMAWeekly Radio. “There’s a plot, in typical Mamet style there’s a trail and deception and a lot of things happening in this movie. And for all intensive purposes it’s kind of like of an American samurai story.”

Mamet has been intrigued by the sport of mixed martial arts for some time, and the famed writer of classics such as “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “The Untouchables” has gone as far as to earn his purple belt in jiu-jitsu.

“It's more interesting because there are more possibilities,” said Mamet about the sport of MMA. “And after you've watched mixed martial arts, especially if you understand something of any of the various techniques, watching boxing is generally like watching paint dry. Boxing's a standup game. The whole point of boxing is to render your guy unconscious, give him a concussion so he blacks out and falls to the canvas, and knock him out. So that's more or less the only thing that can happen, or the referee can step in and award the fight on points.”

“But in mixed martial arts, a lot of things can happen. You can win on points, the opponent can pass out or he can do something which you don't find in boxing, which is he can tap out. Which is to say that a person can be put in a position whereby if his opponent applies a little bit more pressure, the victim is either gonna pass out or break something. And so the fellow who's getting beaten can simply say, “Tap, you win.” And he can do that because he's being punched, because he's exhausted, because he's put in a choke hold, he's being chocked out or because something is about to break.”

The film also features appearances from other figures in and around the sport of mixed martial arts such as Enson Inoue and John Machado.

“Redbelt” opened in New York and Los Angles on May 2 and will open nationwide to audiences on May 9.

ALVAREZ READY TO BATTLE HELLBOY

Philadelphia native Eddie Alvarez will look to advance to the next round in the Dream Lightweight Tournament on May 11th when he takes on Joachim “Hellboy” Hansen.

Alvarez, considered a dark horse in this tournament, is perhaps the most overlooked fighter in the tournament. With Aoki not able to compete, and “JZ” Calvancante not able to take his place, Alvarez possesses an excellent shot at winning the entire tournament. MMAWeekly Radio spoke with Alvarez recently to discuss his upcoming fight and feelings about competing for Dream.

“It's truly the big show,” said an excited Alvarez. “UFC is the big show in the United States. (Dream) draws double what the UFC usually draws. If you want to fight in front of a sh**load of people and be recognized as a superhero, you fight in Japan. That's how I felt anyway.”

Alvarez, who has fought the majority of his career at welterweight, has dropped down to 154 pounds for this tournament. While Japanese promotions are notoriously known for its last minute notice, Alvarez didn’t seemed particularly bothered by that. “It's great because I got a call three weeks out to ask me if I wanted to be in it. I was like: 'You know what? This is the opportunity of a lifetime.' The experience itself was worth it. I didn't really care whether I won or lost.”

After the Pennsylvanian fought Matt Lee last July in the Bodog promotion, he was unable to secure a fight until January, but not for lack of trying. “I trained a lot at the end of last year and I couldn't get a fight,” Alvarez commented. “I promised myself that I was going to fight a lot this year and that I was going to fight tough opponents. With this tournament, I got both of them.”

EliteXC, M-1 and Dream have secured Alvarez’s wish to fight a lot this year and that’s just fine with him. “I'm under contract with three different companies and it's great to be wanted. I'm glad I'm able to put on exciting fights for these guys. This year is about experience for me. I don't want to concentrate so much on winning. I want to get in the ring and get the experience...”

Alvarez’s next fight with Joachim Hansen is certainly a tough one. Hansen is well known for his excellent striking skills and has victories over top lightweight fighters such as Takanori Gomi, JZ Calvancante, Caol Uno and Yves Edwards. However, Alvarez believes he has all the skills needed to defeat Hansen. “I think I match up well against him. He has good stand-up. He's a very well rounded fighter. Cutting down to this weight, I can match up well with anyone. Where he's strong, I'm a little bit stronger. I have all the tools to beat him. I just have to go in there and apply those tools.”

“He's very robotic in his movement. He's very stiff. I'm more agile. I have a lot of advantages. I just have to come in focused and do what I do.”

Strategies are an integral part of the game for any mixed martial arts fighter and it is no different for Eddie Alvarez. “I always watch tapes and look at tendencies of other fighters,” he said. “But when you get in the ring, your fight style is always going to be consistent. You can't work off of other people's tendencies all the time.”

“I know how to fight southpaws. I'm very good at fighting southpaws. In fact, every southpaw I've fought has been the nastiest knockouts I've ever had. I feel very confident fighting them,” exclaimed the 24 year old.

Now that Alvarez has several venues to fight in this year, he’s completely zoned in on his fighting career. “I'm completely focused this year. I'm in excellent shape. I think I'm at the weight I should be at.”

If Alvarez defeats Hansen, Alvarez will move to the next round to take on more top ranked fighters to establish himself as a contender in the lightweight division. However, Hansen stands in his way and is no pushover.

The one thing that Alvarez believes is that there won’t be a need for the judges for this fight. “I don't feel like this fight is gonna go to decision. Joachim doesn't seem to stand around. It's gonna be a knockout or a TKO. One of us is going to knock something loose. I'm hoping it's me. If I had to predict, I'd say Alvarez with a knockout about four minutes into the first round.”

TEAM JACKSON CAMP REPORT: EVANS & JARDINE PREPARE

Greg Jackson’s team has become one of the premier destinations for a great number of fighters to reach a championship level in the sport. With fighters such as Georges St. Pierre, Rashad Evans, Keith Jardine and many more training under Jackson, the list of upcoming fights and fighters continues to grow for the New Mexico based team.

Rashad Evans Turns His Attention To James Irvin

The time for disappointment was short when Evans heard that he would no longer be facing Chuck Liddell in London, England on June 7 as the UFC quickly filled the void with perennial knockout artist, James Irvin.

Evans will now turn to his lead trainer, Greg Jackson, to prepare him for the change of opponents and Chuck Liddell has to nothing more than an afterthought.

“The Chuck Liddell fight never existed to me now, it’s all about James Irvin,” said Jackson in a recent interview with MMAWeekly Radio. “We have a ton of respect for him and he’s very dangerous and if we don’t follow the right path then we can get into trouble, so we’re taking it very seriously.”

The fight will be featured on the main card of the event with a headliner between welterweight stand-outs Thiago Alves vs. Matt Hughes.

Jardine Ready For Dangerous Challenge of Wanderlei Silva

Coming off of a loss to Chuck Liddell in December, former Pride champion Wanderlei Silva will look to get back on a winning track against the last fighter to defeat Liddell in Keith Jardine.

Jardine hasn’t fought since defeating Liddell last September and despite a number of rumored bouts, the New Mexico based fighter will finally return on May 24 to face Silva in what many consider to be a #1 contender’s bout for the light heavyweight title.

“Wanderlei Silva is still incredibly dangerous at all times and even, believe it or not, at all ranges. It’s a huge challenge, and that’s what we like,” lead trainer Greg Jackson said about the match-up with Silva. “You get up for the challenges, much better than the guys that aren’t as dangerous. It puts us in a good psychological position.”

Joey Villasenor Looks to Impress Against Baroni on CBS

Stepping in for an injured Murilo “Ninja” Rua, top Elite XC middleweight Joey Villasenor jumped at the chance to face off against MMA bad boy, Phil Baroni, on the debut broadcast of the CBS/Elite XC Saturday Night Fights show taking place May 31 in New Jersey.

Villasenor is coming off of a brutal knockout win over former UFC fighter Ryan Jensen and having a chance to fight on CBS is just another great opportunity for the former King of the Cage champion.

Jackson stated in a recent interview with MMAWeekly Radio that Baroni always exhibits great wrestling and powerful punches. Villasenor will obviously also take one step closer to another shot at the Elite XC middleweight title if he is able to dispatch of Baroni in their fight.

Nate Marquardt Travels to London To Face Leites

Coming off of a submission win over Jeremy Horn in February, Nate Marquardt returns on June 7 in London to square off against ground wizard, Thales Leites.

Marquardt and Leites were supposed to fight back in February, but Leites had to withdraw due to an injured hand and now back at 100% the two top 185lbers will face off at UFC 85 instead.

While both fighters have unbelievable credentials on the ground, it would seem going in that Marquardt would have a decided edge standing, but it remains to be seen what gameplan lead trainer Greg Jackson will implement when matching up against Leites.

News and Notes from Team Jackson

- Canadian middleweight David Loiseau has continued to work with Team Jackson over the past few months and coming off of a win over Todd Gouwenberg in March, he will travel back to New Mexico in the next week to start training again for an as of yet unannounced fight.

- Damacio Page is currently dealing with a shoulder injury according to lead trainer Greg Jackson. Page was set to face Yoshiro Maeda at the upcoming WEC in June, but Maeda got pulled to fight bantamweight champion, Miguel Torres, in his first title defense. For now, Page will rehab from his injury while waiting for the WEC to place him in another bout.

- Donald Cerrone will fight on the previously mentioned WEC card against another top lightweight in Rich Crunkilton.

- Female fighter, Julie Kedzie, will be out of training for at least 6 weeks after completing PRK surgery (photorefractive keratectomy) to correct vision problems. She last fought in Battlequest where she defeated Angela Hayes.

Ronaldo Jacaré Interview

What did you think about your DREAM first fight?

It was great. I made a nive bout, but I have to improve and improve. I faced a wrestler, I took him down and I am happy with that, but I know I have to improve and I will improve.

Did DREAM tell you who will be your next opponent?

No, they didn’t, but I am anxious to know.

Who would you like to face?

I am employee from DREAM and the opponent that they choose for me it is great. I hope to be the toughest one.

To face Sakuraba it would be a good fight at this point in your career?

Sakuraba had always fought well against BJJ fighters and won from many of them, I would be very happy if DREAM choose this fight.

What did the Japanese think about your performance?

They got crazy and they thought I am strong, but I will train to be better, more focused and stronger.

How was to fight at ? How was fans reception?

I always had the dream to fight in Japan. This dream came when I went to fight the BJJ Challenge Brazil vs. Japan and after the event I went to Pride to see Wanderlei (Silva) become the champion knocking out Quinton Jackson and when Rodrigo Minotauro took Cro Cop arm. I got crazy with that show and I talk to myself: “one day I will fight here”, and so am I here. Who watch DREAM knows that they were perfect in everything. And the reception was amazing, no comments. The Japanese people like our BJJ very much.

What do you think Gesias made to loose for Aoki?

Gesias is a warrior, had the chance to finish the fight at the first round. For sure he knows what he made wrong and he are going to adjust everything. He didn’t fought nicely and he knows that, but this can happen with any athlete. Each athlete fights at a different way, but against a flexible athlete as Aoki, I would fight fencing my hands under legs or I would try to pass the guard from outside.

And what did Nakahara made to losse for Sakuraba?

Nakahara were very well at the fight and with a amazing take down defense, but he needs to train his ground better. I talked with him and he is already doing that, and with time, the results are going to appear, because enthusiasm and determination he has.
