Hidehiko Hasegawa's interview

DEEP champion, Hidehiko Hasegawa, scheduled to fight Hayato Mach Sakurai on Yarennoka!, shared his thoughts about this upcoming fight

- Did you expect to be fighting Mach Sakurai?

Not at all.

- When did you know about your match?

It was the day before the press conference. Mr. Saeki had forgotten to tell me till then.

- You said you heard about joining in "Yarennoka!" through the press and broadcasting in your blog.

That`s right. Mr. Saeki asked me if I would like to fight in "Yarennnoka!" before, but was not told after that. After training, a press guy told me that your name was in the list of fight in "Yarennoka!"

- How was your 2007? You became the DEEP champion and fought Kim Dong Hyung twice this year.

I don`t want to fight him again. I`m glad to be able to have a title match and be a champion. I have to do one more big fight left though.

- Are you thinking to do any performance on NYE?

I usually fight in smaller places and I do nothing but dashing in the ring.. I haven`t thought about yet but I should do something.

- You are going to fight as a DEEP champion on NYE. Do you feel any responsibility as a DEEP representative?

Mr. Saeki said he would send Mr.Hasegawa Mr. DEEP confidently. I think I don`t want to have a lot of pressure, but I will do my best and show the DEEP has higher level than when Mach was a part of us.

- I suppose the rule will be similar to the PRIDE rule. Can you adjust to the PRIDE rule?

My fight style will not be influenced by rules.

- What do you think about your opponent, Mach Sakurai?

He stays in the top of MMA for last 10 years. He has an amazing power to damage opponents. He said he would like to have a fight like playing a game, Final Fantasy. In the game, I`m the main person who started from 1st level and finally get a chance to fight a strong guy.

** Mr. Saeki interrupted and said you are not challenging him. You are the champion who is getting his challenge.

What? Don`t be like that. It is obvious I`m not taking his challenge but I`m getting this opportunity to fight him finally.

- Have you been depressed before the fight?

Yes, I have once in a while but it wastes of my time. I think positive and try to enjoy my fight. I like fighting and decided to come this far.

- You have a fight in Deep X on Dec 02.

I wonder if someone fights instead of me. My opponent is actually really good. This fight won`t affect to my fight on NYE. I`m sure I will win.

Mr. Saeki said this fight should not be arranged.

- Do you think the fight on NYE is important for your career as a fighter?

I am focusing on my fight and not thinking about my career after this fight.

- Are you going to use Sambo techniques?

Sure.

- Any message to your fans?

I hope many fans come and see our fight on NYE. I can guarantee that watching the fight live is much more exciting than watching on TV.

- Any message to people who have never seen your fight?

I will show you my Sambo techniques which I brushed up in DEEP.

Versus and WEC anounce outside the cage
Versus is taking the next step in its extended coverage of World Extreme Cagefighting. The network tonight will air the first WEC Outside the Cage special as a lead-in to the Dec. 12 WEC event at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

WEC Outside the Cage will feature interviews, fight clips and behind the scenes footage to preview the live event.

The Dec. 12 fight card is the organization’s most ambitious effort to date including three title fights. It will air live on Versus. The main event features featherweight champion Urijah Faber defending his belt against Ultimate Fighting Championship and Pride veteran Jeff Curran, Doug Marshall puts his light heavyweight title on the line against undefeated Ariel Gandulla, middleweight champ Paulo Filho defends against Chael Sonnen, and former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver makes his WEC debut at 145-pounds against contender Cub Swanson.

The event on Dec. 12 is the first fight after Versus and WEC announced a partnership extension to bring 15 additional live WEC events and 20 WEC WrekCAGE episodes to the network.

“Three great title fights on the card, led by one of the most popular MMA fighters in Urijah Faber, coupled with the WEC debut of UFC star Jens Pulver is a great way to kick off our recently extended partnership,” said Marc Fein, Senior Vice President of Programming and Production for Versus.

“Viewership has increased with each fight since the WEC’s first event on Versus and we are confident that this tremendous line-up of fights will continue that trend.”

JOHN McCARTHY REPORTEDLY RETIRING

“Big” John McCarthy is reportedly retiring following Saturday’s “Ultimate Fighter” finale at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports. He is scheduled to preside over the main event match-up of Clay Guida versus Roger Huerta.

He is expected to take a position as a mixed martial arts analyst at The Fight Network reported Iole.

McCarthy has been a staple of the Ultimate Fighting Championship since its second event on March 11, 1994. He is widely regarded as the leading authority in the world on MMA officiating. According to his website, BigJohnMcCarthy.com, he has officiated more than 500 bouts in his career.

He has been a driving force in the progression of officiating in the sport and in development of the rules commonly used today. McCarthy – along with Nelson Hamilton, Herb Dean and Cecil Peoples – is a trainer of other officials via a company called REFS (Ring Experienced Fight Specialists).

A black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Rorion Gracie, McCarthy last year opened Big John’s Ultimate Training Academy in Valencia, Calif. He is also a longtime self-defense and tactics instructor for the Los Angeles Police Department.

JOSH BARNETT COACHING WORLD-CLASS TEAM

Josh Barnett has decided to throw his hat into coaching as his team makes their debut this weekend at Ring of Fire in Manila, Philippines. Ring of Fire is debuting its team format with high profile coaches such as the aforementioned Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Royce Gracie and Gokor Chivichyan.

“I got wind of this because some female fighters were talking about a big opportunity for them to fight. I was like, I would like to get Ginele [Marquez] involved in whatever this is,” Barnett told MMAWeekly Radio about how he first caught wind of the event. “I heard they were trying to get together some captains and teams and I said, ‘Well, if you don't want anybody in the other teams to lose, then don't give me a team. But if you wanna see the best guys out there, and you wanna see what it's like to really put a team together and set an example for the rest of the world, then put me in there.’”

The roster for Team Barnett is filled with depth and talent with UFC veterans Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Jeff Monson, Yuki Kondo and Koji Oishi. On the female side of the team, he has the very tough Ginele Marquez.

With a team of that magnitude, Barnett is proud to say they were all handpicked.

“Some of these guys outsourced to find other people. I take a lot of pride in the fact that the whole creation of my team, and the entire reason why I was able to put together a team like this is because everybody on that team I have a personal relationship with.”

With the lineup that Barnett has going into the event, he expects wins from every member.

“It's what I expect from my guys and I told them that. I expect to win every match. I want everyone to go in there and take everyone out quick so we can move on and be healthy.”

The team concept has not caught on with many fans in mixed martial arts, primarily because they believe that this is an individual sport. Barnett, however, believes that the team concept can succeed.

“As with anything, it all comes down to the individuals,” he explained. “If the team is comprised with those who will put on the fights that people want to see, then they won't have any trouble keeping people interested.”

Many fans have been wondering where “The Babyface Assassin” has been in terms of his fighting career. Barnett was last seen on New Year’s Eve of 2006 fighting to a tough decision loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

“Nothing on my fighting so far. But eventually someone is gonna have to come to terms that if they want the best, there are things that are gonna have to be done and they are going to have to find people to man-up and get in the ring with me.”

With Yarennoka, the Japanese promoted New Year’s Eve event, occurring in a couple of weeks, there has been speculation that Barnett may be available to fight on that show. MMAWeekly questioned Barnett about his interest in participating on the show.

“Of course, but it has nothing to do with anything but the promoters themselves. If they are serious, then I'm sure we can do something. If they are not interested in having the top guys on their shows, then I guess I won't talk to them.”

The most interesting aspect of that show is that the MMAWeekly.com No. 1 ranked heavyweight in the world, Fedor Emelianenko is fighting and against an unnamed opponent as of this moment. Barnett commented on his desire to fight Fedor.

“At this point, all I wanna do is get in the ring. I'm not even worried about who it is. He's the No. 1 guy, so it would be an incredible fight.”

Rampage trainer: ‘Our plan is to get vengeance’ against Wanderlei Silva and Shogun Rua

“I’ve always said that our plan is to get vengeance, you know? Our plan is to get everyone that beat us and our plan is to get Wanderlei Silva or Shogun next. That’s just on my desire list, but I don’t know if those kids are ready or if they even want to fight Rampage so we’ll have to see. We’ll make a choice collectively with the matchmaker Joe and the promoter Dana and see what the choice is.”

Juanito Ibarra — the trainer for UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson — wants to go after former Pride FC stars Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Both Brazilian fighters have crushed Rampage when all three competed in Japan. In fact, Silva has done it twice. For that to happen anytime soon, however, Silva would have to get passed Chuck Liddell at UFC 79: “Nemesis” on December 29. Shogun, on the other hand, would have to put together a few more wins after his upset loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 76: “Knockout” in September.

CBS wanted Lesnar's UFC debut

Following up on our story in November about CBS wanting UFC to produce specials for their network (for that story, click here) , a deal had seemed imminent as of last week.
One of the major hold ups of the deal was that CBS wanted Brock Lesnar's debut to be on one of their specials. Obviously that would have cost UFC a lot of PPV revenue, however they were considering it and it was only until earlier this week that they officially announced Lesnar's debut for UFC 81 on Feb. 2, 2008.

Whether that means the deal has fallen through, or if CBS gave in to the UFC on the Lesnar issue should be evident in the coming days.

In an interesting note, when Lesnar had signed with UFC, an executive on Spike TV had suggested for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter to feature heavyweights and Lesnar to be one of them. Obviously they could have manipulated it to give Lesnar easy fights early on, and Lesnar's involvement would have probably made the season the highest rated yet. That idea was quickly shot down, and although no official reason was given, I would assume UFC didn't want Lesnar's first fights on free TV.

Brandon Vera Plans To Stay At Heavyweight, Wants A Rematch With Tim Sylvia

Brandon Vera (8-1), was apparently offered a fight in early March but declined due to the status of a broken hand he suffered in a unanimous decision loss to Tim Sylvia.
Vera has five fights remaining on his current UFC contract and plans to continue fighting at heavyweight despite the UFC's repeated attempts to get him to drop to the light heavyweight limit of 205 lbs.

“I was like, ‘For what? I ain’t moving nowhere,’” Vera told TheFightNetwork.com. “Why the hell would I even think of moving [down]? I have a whole bunch of stuff to do still. I’ve got to beat Tim. I'm not going to let that one go. Our paths will cross again, I promise.”

SEAN SHERK STRIPPED OF TITLE

According to sources close to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the promotion has stripped lightweight champion Sean Sherk of his title following the upholding of his suspension by the California State Athletic Commission for testing positive for the steroid Nandrolone.

The CSAC, earlier this week, did decrease Sherk’s suspension from 12 to 6 months. He will be eligible to come off of suspension in early January due to his suspension being retroactive to the night of his July 7 bout against Hermes Franca.

A proposed interim lightweight title bout between B.J. Penn and Joe Stevenson on Jan. 19 will now reportedly be declared a full title bout and drop the interim designation.

Arlovski claims the UFC has "benched" him; contract set to expire on April 15

Even before the Fertitta brothers and Dana White entered the picture, heavyweight fighter Andrei Arlovski was wreaking havoc inside the Octagon. He burst onto the scene more than seven years ago, submitting Aaron Brink via armbar at UFC 28: “High Stakes” back in 2000.

Naturally, Arlovski has had his share of ups and downs inside the Octagon since that time during nearly eight years of loyal service.

The pinnacle of his mixed martial arts career came in 2005 when he stopped Tim Sylvia at UFC 51: “Super Saturday” to capture the interim heavyweight title. “The Pitbull” eventually lost the strap to “The Maine-iac” after two successful title defenses.

He’s been working hard to get back on the top of the heap ever since; however, contract struggles outside the cage have kept the talented Belarussian on the sidelines for the better part of 2007. In fact, he’s only competed once this year, earning a unanimous decision win over top-ranked Fabricio Werdum at UFC 70: “Nations Collide” back in April.

UFC President Dana White promised Arlovski another crack at the title with a win before the fight. After the fight, however, it never came. In fact, nothing has come.

Arlovski remains “on the bench” waiting for another opportunity to demonstrate the skills
that helped him — and the organization — become a popular attraction.

We get more e-mails inquiring about the status of Arlovski than perhaps any other fighter, which signals that his fan base is still strong … and hungry.

MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) recently caught up with the Chicago-based fighter during an exclusive interview to find out more about his current fight status, when we can expect him to return, what he’s been doing to keep focused and busy, and much more.

MMAmania.com: Finish this sentence: I’m currently not fighting in the UFC and I have no immediate fight scheduled because the UFC …

Andrei Arlovski: … put me on the bench.

MMAmania.com: Do you have contact with other UFC fighters? If so, have they been supportive of your current situation?

Andrei Arlovski: Yes, I do talk with other UFC fighters but I do not discuss my contract or personal business with them.

MMAmania.com: Aside from Tim Sylvia, you haven’t lost since 2002. Do you think the criticisms of Sylvia/Arlovski 3 and Werdum/Arlovski are unfair based on your previous accomplishments?

Andrei Arlovski: First I don’t think the fight with Werdum was bad. I followed my teams instructions to win and Dana had promised me a fight for a title if I won. I was not ready for a jiu-jitsu match and prefer to strike so it went how it did. We looked for a title fight.

MMAmania.com: Give us your take on the Randy Couture situation.

Andrei Arlovski: Couture he is very intelligent and smart fighter. In my opinion, he knows what he is doing.

MMAmania.com: As that story unfolded, was there any point in time when you felt like you could relate?

Andrei Arlovski: I think everyone can somewhat be in his situation.

MMAmania.com: You’ve been in the UFC for years and have been one of its biggest, most bankable stars even before the sport started to explode. Now that it is so big it seems like the UFC perhaps isn’t grateful for your services like Rich Franklin, Matt Hughes, etc. Is there some favoritism going on and does that in anyway affect your desire to want to continue the relationship with the UFC?

Andrei Arlovski: There are a lot of great fighters including myself that have helped this sport grow.

MMAmania.com: Fedor Emelianenko is now representing M-1 Global and as of late the M-1 executives have been scrambling to locate a worthy opponent. Has anyone from that organization contacted you or your agent?

Andrei Arlovski: I have one more more fight with the UFC and I am focused on training for that fight … when they call.

MMAmania.com: What do you think of Fedor’s decision to not join the UFC?

Andrei Arlovski: I guess somebody offered him more money and better terms than the UFC. He is a great fighter, but I am sure it was a business decision.
MMAmania.com: Tell us how a fight between Andrei and Fedor would turn out.

Andrei Arlovski: He is a great fighter. He has a perfect record … but nobody is unbeatable.

MMAmania.com: What is your opinion on the influx of former PRIDE fighters to the UFC?

Andrei Arlovski: So far, only Anderson Silva and Rampage have done well in the UFC (I think). I think Anderson Sivla will be champion in his weight class for a very long time.

MMAmania.com: If Joe Silva called you tomorrow and offered you the chance to fight any heavyweight in the UFC, who would you choose?

Andrei Arlovski: My first choice would be to fight the current heavyweight title holder. My second choice would be Tim Sylvia … one more time.

MMAmania.com: How difficult is it to maintain an aggressive training regimen with no fight on the horizon?

Andrei Arlovski: First of all you have to keep your mind clean and work more for technique and weaknesses when you have time off. I am getting better everyday.

MMAmania.com: What is most important to you as a professional fighter: winning the match or putting forth a sensational performance?

Andrei Arlovski: It is kind of a trick question. But I am there to win. When I fight, if there is a chance have an amazing fight of course I want that.

MMAmania.com: Tell us how you ended up on The Jerry Springer Show and what the UFC had to say about it.

Andrei Arlovski: The show contacted me because they are starting a series of celebrities that will be able to “act” as security. It worked out well because I got to partner again with one of my sponsors, SOYO TV and my line of Pitbull TV’s. Going on the show was a lot of fun for everyone and I am glad I went. I got a lot of positive feedback from my fans on my MySpace and Web site.

MMAmania.com: What skills or talents do you have outside of MMA? What would you be doing if you were not a fighter?

Andrei Arlovski: I have a high education from the police academy in Belarus. I can become a lot of different things from the degree. Right now I am focused on getting the belt back, that is it.

MMAmania.com: Has the UFC contacted you about challenging for the vacant heavyweight title? Is there any interest in fighting “Big Nog” in the future? How would that go?

Andrei Arlovski: No, they have not contacted me about the heavyweight title or any real fights for that case. Of course I am interested. I want to fight big names and the best fighters. Big Nog is a great fighter with great jiu-jitsu and striking. I am training very hard on my technique in each discipline with great trainers every day. I train to win. I don’t plan on losing anytime soon. I will be heavyweight champion again … very soon. I promise.

MMAmania.com: When does your contract expire in 2008? Will you extend the contract before it is up? Have you been contacted about at least fighting before it’s up? Any idea who are you fighting next?

Andrei Arlovski: It expires April 15, 2008. I have no idea when or who I will be fighting next but hopefully I will know soon.

MMAmania.com: What fight makes the most sense for your career right now, looking at the recent influx of talent in the division, provided you can’t get a shot at the vacant strap?

Andrei Arlovski: There are a lot of great fighters in the heavyweight division right now. I would like to fight some big name. Or Tim Sylvia one more time.

MMAmania.com: What message do you have for your fans who are waiting patiently for your return?

Andrei Arlovski: I want to thank them for their continued support. It helps me when I am training to know that they still believe in me and that they want to see me fight again.

MMAmania.com: Any sponsors or others you would like to plug/thank?

Andrei Arlovski: I would like to thank all of my sponsors and events that have me for appearances and seminars. I also would like people to go to www.soyo.com/pitbull so they can see my line of LCD HD TV’s. They are really cool and part of the money goes to charity. Fans can go to my Web site (www.arlovski.tv) or MySpace (myspace.com/arlovski) if they want to keep in touch.

MMAmania.com: Okay champ that’s it. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. Best of luck in the future and in your next fight … whenever that may be.

Andrei Arlovski: Thank you for this interview.

"Rampage" to Defend Belt Versus Griffin in '08

UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson (Pictures) will defend his belt against fan favorite Forrest Griffin (Pictures) after the pair match up as coaches on the seventh season of "The Ultimate Fighter" in 2008, the UFC announced Sunday.

Jackson captured the belt in May before defending it against sitting PRIDE 205-pound champion Dan Henderson (Pictures). A nagging hand injury prompted Jackson to take an extended period between fights, allowing the UFC to put him on TUF 7, which will feature an all-middleweight cast.

Griffin is the quintessential "Ultimate Fighter" competitor. A star of the first season of the SpikeTV reality program, Griffin solidified his status as a ranked light heavyweight with a stunning stoppage of Mauricio Rua (Pictures) in September. The win put Griffin in the No. 1 contender slot, according to UFC president Dana White, this despite the success of other light heavyweights, most notably Keith Jardine (Pictures), who in his last two fights stopped Griffin and out-pointed former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell (Pictures).
