I forget if I touched on this in the other thread, but I got alot more respect for legit artists who make mixtapes to fill in the gap between REAL albums.

These cats trying to make careers and names stirctly off shitty mixtapes piss me off because it gives the entire game a black eye. Sure some hardcore underground fans are into the shit just cause they want as much material as they can get, but the average consumer more often than not sees or hears this bullshit and assumes all underground music is like that.

But yeah Mutt, we each got a slightly different tilt on it, but I think we are coming from the same place.

my stance on mixtapes is.... they aight, but if u gonna take a famous beat from a hit song, ur version BETTER BE BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL or dont fuck up the beat ya dig! i refuse to buy mixtapes...only artist mixtape i will buy is a rich mixtape, and then i aint payin more than 10 bucks. cuz to me, a mixtape is rarely back to back slap, its just a disc that might have 4 cuts i wanna ride to

YOUR RIGHT IT'S TOO EASY FOR ANYBODY TO DO WITH THA INTERNET NOWADAYS AND IT'S OVERSATURATED.

BACK IN THA DAY YOU COULD'NT DO A MIXTAPE WITHOUT A DJ BEING INVOLVED SOMEHOW. SINCE DJ'S ARE THA HEART OF HIP-HOP, THESE ARTIST NEED TO GET THA DJ'S INVOLVED WITH THEIR MIXTAPES. NOT JUST ANY DJ WILL DO EITHER

Mixtapes are alright in between album releases. They'd also be a good way of just gettin' a buzz goin' before you drop a full album.

IMO, some of these so-called mixtapes I'd consider compilations. Mixtapes, for the most part, are "hosted" by someone and mixed by a dj. Also, there's some sort of transition from one song to the next. If you don't have those anywhere in there, can you really call it a mixtape?

Before 50 Cent, there were no mixtapes by artists in KC. "Since 50 got on through killin mixtapes in NYC, I'm gonna imitate him". IMO, this attitude is holding artists back and is handicapping the respect for the true creativity it takes to make a meaningful record. The KC scene isn't even comparable to NYC. So I laugh at all these "Mixtape Rappers", fuckin off lyrics on a beat that the only investment was, dowload and burn. Leave KC, go to NYC, and get on an official DJ Clue or Funkmaster Flex mixtape, hell go to the ATL and get on a DJ Drama mixtape, then the "Mixtape Rapper" at least deserves a respectable listen. DJ Fresh used to kill the town with his FRESH MIXES, but those were mixcd's and not mixtapes in the true definition. Final thought, why waste time on something that will not be timeless. As soon as the popular beat is history, so is the relevance of whatever "Mixtape Rapper" used it to help themselves. Plus, it's stealing. I don't respect thieves, end of story.

WHUTZ GOOD MOCHEEZ? I WAS JUST CURIOUS WHAT A MIXTAPE IN THA TRUE DEFINITION IS IN YOUR OPINION?

I AGREE WITH YOU ON ALOT OF POINTS YOU MADE, MOST OF THESE CATS RESORT TO JACKIN BEATS BECAUSE 1.) THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO BUY QUALITY BEATS(THEY WOULD RATHER COP SOME SNEAKERS AND A 5TH WIT SOME K TO GO WIT IT. 2.) THEY TAKIN THA EASY WAY OUT. 3.) THEY DON'T HAVE THA NETWORK CAPABILITIES TO DO THINGS THA "PROPER" WAY. THESE ARE ONLY A FEW AMONG A LONG LIST.

THA WHOLE STEALIN THING IS SOME BULLSHIT...YOU LIVE IN A COUNTRY THAT WAS BASED ON STEALIN(INDIANS) AND WE TALKIN BOUT HIP-HOP(SAMPLE BEATS)

SO WHEN YA BOY HAD THAT SONG WIT THAT SAMPLE IN IT, WAS HE STEALIN, BORROWIN, JACKIN, BOOSTIN, USIN SOMEONE ELSES SHIT WITH A TWIST OR WHUT?

ALSO IN THIS CURRENT STATE OF MICROWAVE RAP, THESE YOUNGSTAZ DON'T KNOW THA MEANING OF TIMELESS. WE COME FROM A DIFFERENT ERA HOMIE, YOU GOTTA REMEMBER THAT. WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GO BACK TO THA GOLDEN ERA OF HIP HOP(WHERE SAMPLING WAS VERY HEAVY)...

JUS CURIOUS HOMIE... LET'S CHOP IT UP, ANYONE FEEL FREE TO JOIN IN...

What's good Mutt, just killin time while I regroup from the grind. (Gotta luv that ice cold Negra Modelo) Anyway, my opinion of a "real" mixtape is a collection of exclusive records (unreleased, never heard) tied together on the album by a respected club, street, or radio DJ who is a kind of "master of ceremonies" on the mixtape. A mix CD is a collection of popular songs that generally doesn't have a DJ hosting. Like the "NOW That's What I Call Music" collection. As far as my bro Young Kev and the SAMPLE he had in his song "I Can't Help Myself", it is what it is, A SAMPLE. I know I don't have to break down what a sample is defined as. Hip-Hop was built on samples. But to take a whole instrumental from an artist is straight up JACKIN, STEALIN, CLIPPIN, or ROBBERY without a gun. Now what you are doing with the STREETMONSTAZ is kinda a hybrid. Some new millenium shit, by some new millenium DJs and Producers. You guys do have exclusive never before heard shit, ya'll have some popular tracks too, and ya'll also have locals doing vocals on JACKED beats. Ice Cube made the best "MIXTAPE" song ever with Jackin 4 Beats. Being the real MC that he is, he used about 6 or 7 beats on the same song without losing a step on each change of rhythm. You got local rappers in KC trying to make a career out of rapping over industry beats, using the same lyrical and chorus patterns that were used by the original artist. Shit, I might as well start dropping some mixtapes, if all you gotta do is fit your words onto someon else's rhythm and flow. I know I can fit some real tight KC game on Young Jeezy's "I luv it". Ha, ha, ha, ha.

This is the shit that just kills me...the half ass rappers are strictly doing mixtapes cause they are afraid to release real product and they try to act like they are some kind of factor.

It's pitiful. I can't respect an artist that doesn't have a real album.

WORD, THATS WASSUP B. I'M JUST AS TIRED OF THESE LOCAL MIXTAPES AS THA NEXT MAN. THAT'S WHY WE (THA STREETMONSTAZ) ARE TRYNA TO MAKE A CHANGE FOR THA BETTER. WE LIKE TO BREAK SONGS AND PUT PEOPLE UP ON THA NEXT SHIT SINCE WE CONSIDER OURSELVES TRENDSETTAZ, BUT BEIN IN A MARKET THAT HAS THA GENERAL POPULATION CONDITIONED ON WHUT A MIXTAPE IS, IS KINDA HARD. THEY USED TO HEARIN THA SAME ASS BULLSHIT THAT THEY HEAR 50 TIMES A DAY ON THA RADIO ON A MIXTAPE. PAST MIXTAPES DJ'S IN THA TOWN JUST DID SHIT A DIFFERENT WAY. AS FAR AS I SEE THEY SHUT DOWN ANYWAYS. WE DO SPECIFIC TAPES FOR YOUR EVERYDAY PEOPLE BECAUSE THERE IS A DEMAND FOR IT. OUT TRUE STREET TAPES ARE JUST THAT, WHUTEVA WE WANNA DROP ON 'EM. WE MONTHS AHEAD OF THA RADIO ANYWAYS.

STAY TUNED...
