mIRC is a program for the PC. You use it to access IRC (internet relay chat). But...getting files from people who are filesharing on IRC is usually slow, takes a LONG time to finally send (you have to queue up your requests and "wait in line") and is unreliable--if it stops in the middle due to some error, you're fucked and have to start all over again. I was using a T1/T3 connection and still had problems. Ugh.

The frustrating thing is, there are a TON of files on IRC that I don't ever see posted to newsgroups or publicly on the Web. But IRC is so unreliable and slow, I never use it anymore.

Im on DSL, and I never get that fast on mirc. I hate being stuck in a queue list. Fucking make me leave my shit on for hours. Im always like number 50 in line and shit. And one time dude gave me a fucking virus!

Fuck Kazza too, the Record companies are gonna start bringing lawsuits to individuals trading files starting today. Theyre cracking down hardcore. You guys better move them files out of your share folder.

To me, the best shit is the AOL Chatroom Servers. Just go into one of these private rooms and there are servers scrolling a bot that has a link to thier list. Click on the link and choose whatever you want from the list. The server will send it to you via email. Way too convienient! Shit is cool as fuck!

You guys are making this harder then it really needs to be. IRC can be a great source of downloading any files you wish at the highest possible speeds, and the GURU is going to show you how.

The first thing you need to do, is speed up your cable moden. My download cap is set at around 210k, I often hit that mark when downloading files from HTTP links, but could never near 100k on IRC. That was until, I was introduced to the Quest@Home Cable Patch. This file does not uncap your moden, rather tweaks your windows registry that is set to deprive you of your full-speed. If your saying to yourself "I don't have @home cable", well, neither do I and it worked perfect. I now hit 150k-200k+ on IRC.

Download this patch: http://www.speedguide.net/files/spatch.zip

This patch is for win9x/ME only, if you have another OS let me know and ill see what I can find. Download this at your own risk. I have never heard of an instance where the patch didn't work, but I havent seen every cable service or modem in existance.

Now you need to find the files you want to download on IRC. Most of the popular channels you know of offer an immense amount of files, the problem is, it's so popular that everyone else is going there looking for the same thing as you. So what you need to do is find a place where there arn't 3,000 people in the channel waiting on the same file. Go to this link and bookmark it, because it will be the best thing to ever happen to you as far as downloading on IRC.

http://www.packetnews.com/

This is a website called PacketNEWS. There are thousands of bots and XDCC servers on IRC offering files at extremely high speeds, this is a search engine that has a big number of them in its database. You type in the application, game, album you are looking for, it will search the lists of every bot in its database, provide you with where the bot its (network & channel), how fast the bot is, it's online status, and more importantly, a somewhat accurate description of its send/queue list. Alot of the stuff I download on IRC is on some strange network in some channel I never heard of, but as long as im downloading it at 150k I could care less. If you have any more questions regarding IRC or anything computer related, hit me up here and ill do what I can..

I use MIRC all the time...it was a little hard to learn but one you get the hang of it you are good to go. There are also alot of usual scripts that makes things a little easier. I usually download at a decent speed....the highest was from a bot and it was at about 300k probably a little less and I am on cable w/out any special tweaks. Maybe I should tweak it to see if it would go faster using Windows XP Pro.

@ GURU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yo homie i got windows XP, can you find a patch for that??
Try one of these. I do not recomend installing both, because they alter your windows registry. If you don't like one, maybe try the other after you uninstall the first.

TCP Optimizer [download]
Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free Windows program designed to help optimize your Internet connection. Just download and run, no installaion required. The program makes it easy to find the best MaxMTU value, test latency and tweak all the important broadband related registry parameters. The Optimizer can be helpful with tuning any Internet connection type, from dialup to Gigabit+. If you need help with the program, read our broadband tweaking articles, the Optimizer FAQ, and/or visit our Forums. As an alternative, you can try one of our generic Registry patches instead.
OS: Windows 9x/ME/2K/XP | version: 1.0 | filesize: 425 KB

sguide_tweak_2k.zip [download]
Description: Generic patch for Windows XP and Windows 2000 (all versions). This patch will optimize your TCP/IP Registry settings for high speed Internet connections. To install, extract the .inf file first, then double-click (or right-click on filename and choose install from the pull-down menu) and reboot for changes to take effect.
OS: Windows 2K/XP | version: 1.0 | filesize: 1 KB

Here is a file that will remove the second tweak, and restore your registry back to it's original form if you are unhappy with the results. [download]

Remember, none of these patches are IRC specific. In other words, these patches are in no way designed to work specifically to speed up your downloads on IRC, some just happen to optimize the throughput on the program. I have not tested either of these, nor do I know anyone who has, but it's on a very creditable website, so it should be all good.

source for all tweaks and information provided therein provided by http://www.speedguide.net

The tweak that I provided, as well as every other tweak, won't speed up your cable modem any faster then it is capabe of going with your cap. If your cap is 300k, I don't know how much hope you have, but if it's any faster then that, by all means, tweak it and see what happens.
