I'm looking for some bands bands (preferably black metal or the like) with a good drummer. I'm talking about drumming that stands out as much as or moreso than the other instruments, not just above average or "better than most". Lots of odd timing, tempo changes, etc. is kinda whta I'm talking about.

The best drummer I've EVER heard is Pat McGrath. Formerly of Slayer and Saosin (Translating the Name EP). Listen to the song "Lost Symphonies" by Saosin and it should leave little doubt. I'm not sure what band he is playing in now (he was never in Saosin, just a studio drummer) but the guy is a maniac.

Well as a drummer I was very influenced by metal so some of these songs might not be "over the top" on the drum volumes but it's enough for me to notice how good they are. Also it's pretty rare for a BM band to try anything "experimental" as BM is very pure, as it should be. As for DM, I don't really listen to DM with tempo changes or breakdowns. Try deathcore for that. So here's a mix of both B and D.

asmodeus - decretum executionis (Not a drum machine, no gay gravity rolls)

Kaoteon - Provenance Of Hatred

funeris nocturnum - burying the last breath of christianity

Lykathea Aflame - On The Way Home

the shattering - next door dead whore

Hate Eternal - Behold Judas

Wait, so you mean a drummer that used to be in Slayer did studio session drumming for Saosin? lol That just sounds funny to me.

I've got a lot more to say later, but before I go to school I need to say that the drummer from The Shattering is dope as fuck. He's exactly what I'm talking about in terms of odd timing.

No, Et De Cela Rien Ne Ressort and the Third Memory/Only For The Sake Of Aching split is the only ones I own and have heard. Oh yeah and their song on the This Is Your Life comp. from Ape Must Not Kill Ape records.

I'm guessing old Third Memory was more metal?

what about metal where the lead singer actually sings instead of screams? maybe similar to system of a down (I know I'm always asking about a group similar to them)

Smurf, do you have any links to Third Memory? I tried to find some of their stuff but to no avail.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. I haven't got around to everything yet(school just started last Wednesday), but there's a few things I like.

Lykathea Aflame and The Shattering seem most appealing right now, mostly because they're not the pounding drums the entire time. But even the more brutal shit sounds good (which is surprising because that's one of the only types of music I consciously avoid..I guess there's always one band that'll open doors to other styles).

I'm going to give Decrepit Birth a listen later on today, too, since they seem special.
