Floyd Mayweather's Retirement: Smart Move and Why

06.06.08 - By Yero moody: As many of you know, who have read my previous articles, that I have always been and will continue to be an avid supporter of great boxers. In my humble opinion, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is the best boxer of this generation. While I do not agree with or like his out of the ring antics, or his seemingly arrogant behavior. It remains clear why he is the number one pound for pound fighter in the world. No other fighter brings the complete array of skills that he brings into the ring. If this retirement turns out to be final I wish him the best as well as his many fans and family members..

At first I was a bit baffled and caught off guard when I read that Mayweather announced his retirement earlier today. Then I began to ponder why he would do such a thing at such a pivotal point in his career. He seems to be right at the point where he can transcend from a great fighter to a truly legendary fighter. With possible huge fights ahead such as the rematch with Oscar De La Hoya (that was tentatively scheduled for September of this year), facing the winner of Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito or a rematch with Ricky Hatton, I asked why retire now?

Two possibilities entered my mind:

1.) By retiring now it would force De La Hoya to pick a new opponent for September which would probably be the winner of the Margarito vs. Cotto fight in July. I strongly feel that Mayweather believes, as do I, that De La Hoya can defeat both Cotto and Margarito even at this stage of his career. Mayweather knows that this will make people really want to see the rematch between he and De La Hoya while simultaneously clearing up all doubt about what level Margarito and Cotto truly are at. The question of who is better between Margarito and Cotto will be answered in July and if De La Hoya beats the winner of that fight no one in their right mind would question a rematch between Mayweather and De La Hoya. Remember, De La Hoya says he is fighting three fights in 2008 and retiring for good. He's already fought one fight against Steve Forbes in May which leaves two more fights. The winner of Cotto vs. Margarito in September and Mayweather in December.

2.) Mayweather truly is retiring at this point in time and is being honest about why. Perhaps he is going through personal matters that are more important to him than boxing is at this time. Can you imagine the true hurt he must feel being estranged from his father? The Mayweather family disputes have been like soap opera dramas being played out for all the world to see. For Mayweather, Jr. to stay as focused as he has on boxing without losing with all the family issues he has is quite impressive. That has got to takes its toll on a family and all of its members. Every human being has more than one dimension and Floyd Mayweather, Jr is no different.

No one really knows the real reason why Mayweather has announced his second retirement. I happen to believe it's reason #1. Mayweather truly wants to be remembered as the best. In order to do that he is going to have to leave no questions unanswered. If my theory is correct and plays out like I think it will, the rematch between De La Hoya and Mayweather would be a megafight like no other. No one will be calling for him to face Cotto or Margarito before facing De La Hoya in this scenario because De La Hoya would've already beaten the better of the two and with one fight left who better to fight than Mayweather?

Of course for those die hard Mayweather haters, and believe me there are plenty, expect them to still claim that Mayweather "needs" to fight Cotto or Margarito and some would say both. Don't get me wrong, as a fan I would love to see him fight one or both of them before retiring. I'm just not foolish enough to state that he would "need" to fight one or both of them before retiring if the scenario I just proposed plays out. It has to end somewhere. Let's say Cotto beats Margarito in July and goes on to face De La Hoya in September. If De La Hoya proves to be the better fighter by beating Cotto, which I truly believe he is, and loses to Mayweather again what does that make Mayweather? I'll leave you to ponder that question and I welcome all your responses.

Thank you for reading.

I don't think DLH would beat Cotto by any means.

But Cotto's style plays perfectly into Oscar's counter punching, and I think that he might have a good enough left hook in him to hurt Cotto. The difference would be Cotto's ability to adjust to his opponents during the fight. He's shown vulnerability, but has always been able to come through with a win in tough fights.

P4P best it will look like this:

1. Manny Pacquiao

2. JM Marquez or Joe Calzaghe, depending on who you ask

If/when Cotto beats Margarito, and if he does it in fairly convincing fashion, then I think Cotto would have to be ranked top 3.

Pacquiao's accomplishments are more than anyone else in boxing so he deserves to be #1. He's gone up 7 weight divisions, became the Linear Champ at 112,126 and 130, he is a 4 Division Champ and he is going to become a 5 Division Champ later this month when he beats Diaz.

WBC 112 Champ
IBF 122 Champ
Ring 126 Champ
WBC 130 Champ
WBC 135 Champ

Pacquiao will be #1 until he loses.

De La Hoya's New Opponent To Be Announced Next Week

By Mark Vester

The sudden retirement by Floyd Mayweather Jr. has sent shockwaves throughout the boxing industry. The proposed September rematch between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya is off, and now Golden Boy Promotions is prepared to move fast with a new opponent.

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy, told writer Dan Rafael that he expects to announce a new opponent for De La Hoya next week.

"I have been informed of Floyd's decision and I wish him good luck in retirement," said Schaefer. "We will move on. Sometime next week, I will announce a big fight for Oscar. There are different names out there and I will be working diligently to announce in the coming days Oscar's next fight."

Given that Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito are fighting at the end July and the announcement by Schaefer is said to be coming in the next few days, De La Hoya's options are starting to quickly shrink.

It could be a longshot, Winky Wright anyone?

I wish Pacquiao and Cotto could fight each other, I guess Pacquiao is the best but he already got his ass whooped by Morales once even though he avenged it but Cotto still hasnt lost but definitely needs to beat a top ranked fighter to even get considered, i just meant Cotto will be eventually now that he wont have to fight Mayweather

Pacquaio beat down Morales twice after losing. I'm just sayin as of right now, Pacquaio deserves it (he's beaten legends, multi division champ, etc.). But I hear what you're saying, Cotto is a beast and he definitely can be #1 champ if he keeps winning.

De La Hoya vs. Cotto/Margarito Winner is Now Open

By Mark Vester

During several media interviews, Oscar De La Hoya said the three-fight retirement plan for 2008 would probably end with a December showdown with WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, provided that Cotto got past Antonio Margarito on July 26. During an interview in late April, De La Hoya called Cotto one of the best fighters in the world and expressed his desire to fight him.

"If I beat Mayweather, who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, my following fight has to be with one of the best and it's no secret that Miguel Cotto is one of the best in the world," De La Hoya said. "He has a difficult fight with Antonio Margarito and although any thing can happen, we all know that Miguel Cotto is going to win.

Of course, De La Hoya would have had to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a proposed September rematch. Not anymore. Now that Mayweather has announced his unexpected retirement, there is nothing to stand in the way of De La Hoya facing the winner of Cotto-Margarito much sooner than expected.

In past interviews, Cotto has also made it known that he wants a crack at De La Hoya. Earlier this year, there were ongoing talks between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions to make a De La Hoya-Cotto bout, but the negotiations came tumbling down when De La Hoya announced that he was planning to stage a tuneup on route to a Mayweather rematch.

The list of marketable opponents for De La Hoya is now slim with Mayweather out of the sport and Ricky Hatton signing a multi-fight deal with Golden Boy. There are two options, the Cotto/Margarito winner or Winky Wright. Wright is coming off a loss to Bernard Hopkins, has been inactive for almost a year, and he's never been a big ticket-seller. Cotto-Margarito is one of the most anticipated fights of the last few years. The winner will easily become the king of the welterweight division - and the perfect gem that De La Hoya needs for one last mega pay-per-view payday.

This retirement is complete Bullshit.....I GUARANTEE FLoyd comes back within A YEAR. I'm not even gonna tell anyone at work about this "news" although they've probably already heard. I'm 100% positive that Mayweather will fight again.

De La Hoya REALLY should reconsider fighting Cotto. I don't really like him, but in all honesty I don't think he deserves to be handicapped for the rest of his life.....lol, but really I'm not kidding Oscar should retire already.

though, The Winky fight makes perfect sense to me. DLH wouldn't have to cut weight, both lost to Hopkins, and Winky deserves a big payday. DLH does not, nor does he deserve to fight the winner of Margarito Cotto.
Fuck that guy. He's a genius business man, but a watered down, old fighter.

I think he'll come back eventually too, kinda like Sugar Ray Leonard, but it is a real retirement because he will lose his belts, p4p status and the oscar fight is canceled, which was a pretty much guaranteed 30 million dollars. For him to walk away from that kind of money is pretty crazy, imo, especially how money motivated he his.

My thoughts:

De La Hoya/Trinidad. No. Please. I can't stand either, but De La Hoya would demolish him, I think.

De La Hoya/Cotto; sounds good to me, but I don't feel as if De La Hoya "deserves" the fight...if it wasn't Oscar, he wouldn't be considered. Period.

De La Hoya/Wright...Please. I'm a Winky fan. Winky would beat him. I promise you that.

From a business standpoint. Oscar-Cotto is probably the biggest fight behind what would've been the Floyd-DLH 2 bout.

Margarito is still virtually unknown to most casual fans, so if he somehow gets a win over Cotto, which I doubt...it wont be nearly as big a fight as Cotto-DLH...which would be like another Oscar-Tito. Being that Cotto is "the new" Tito, as far as the fanbase goes.

Yeah, his belts and his P4P ranking ! I don't think he's gone either, it would be dope if he suddenly got the urge to fight his way back up to the top tho.
