Cory Richardson, 24, has been sentenced to 32 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the Dec. 30, 2010, murder of Eric Johnson, 29. Richardson pled guilty to the charge.
Dec. 30, 2010, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police Emergency Communications Center received a call from a witness who stated her boyfriend had been shot at the residence at 2005 N. Weldon Road in Rockford. Deputies responded to the scene, and spoke with the witness, who led deputies into the living room, where a white male, later identified as Johnson was lying on the floor and appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Fire Rescue responded to the scene to administer first aid to Johnson and then he was transported to Rockford Memorial Hospital for treatment. Doctors examined Johnson and found he had a single gunshot wound to the chest. Johnson died at the hospital from the injury.
Through their investigation, detectives learned Thomas Stuen, 30, of Rockford, and Richardson, of Zion, Ill., drove to 2005 Weldon and parked in the driveway. Detectives learned Richardson and Stuen then went to the front porch and kicked the door multiple times until Johnson came to the door. Detectives learned that when Johnson began to open the door, a single gunshot was fired, striking Johnson in the chest. Detectives learned Richardson then entered the home and completed the robbery.
First-degree murder is a Class M felony with a penalty range of 20 to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. The defendant must serve 100 percent of the sentence.
