A week after a 13-year-old girl was shot in the chest, her claim that she was hit while walking with friends along Columbus Parkway was discredited, police said Tuesday.
The thought of a girl being shot randomly in daylight rattled parents and citizens during a two-week period with several local shootings.
The girl and her teenage friends claimed she was struck about 5:15 p.m. on June 24 by a single bullet fired from a red or burgundy pick-up truck as they walked along Columbus, near Aragon Street, police said. They told detectives the truck was occupied by three white males, police said.
"It turns out the story they told about the three white males in the truck was not true," Lt. Eric Mortenson said. "Detectives found out she was actually shot by a suspect during an argument at a different location."
Detectives realized Monday that the whole scenario had been made up after follow-up interviews with witnesses and the victim, police said.
Police discovered a group of young people had been gathered in front of a home on the 400 block of Lexington Drive when an argument broke out, Mortenson said. A 15-year-old boy then allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot the girl once in the chest, police said.
After the shooting, the girl and her friends briefly tried to tend to her injury before deciding to leave the home, Mortenson said.
Police did not reveal why the girl and other witnesses made up the story about who shot her, but Detective Sgt. Lee Horton said the

victim and the suspect were friendly acquaintances.
The 15-year-old suspect, who was not identified because he is a juvenile, was arrested and is in police custody, Mortenson said.
Vallejo police said they were concerned the lie could have caused racial tensions since the fabricated suspects were described as white and the victim is black.
The girl has since been released from the hospital and is expected to fully recover from the gunshot wound, police said.
The teen was one of several shooting victims in Vallejo over the last two weeks. Since June 19 there have been three other reported gunfire victims who survived their wounds and two men who were fatally shot.
