Specter says he's switching from GOP to Dems
AP – 13 mins ago
WASHINGTON – Veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania disclosed plans Tuesday to switch parties, a move intended to boost his chances of winning re-election next year that also will push Democrats within one seat of a 60-vote filibuster-resistant majority.

Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next senator from Minnesota. (Former senator Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

"I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary," said Specter in a statement. "I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election."

He added: "Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans."

President Obama was informed of Specter's decision at around 10:25 a.m., according to White House officials, and reached out to the senator minutes later to tell him "you have my full support," and we are "thrilled to have you."

^^ we are fucked either way really.

At least without a 60 vote majority the two parties are locked in a battle that doesn't really stray too far off center. I would hate to see either party with such a majority.

If you spent 1 MILLION dollars a day, EVERYDAY for 2009 years, you STILL wouldn't have spent as much money as Obama has (so far).

He actually started out as a Dem back in '65. But its not like he's gonna vote according to the Democratic ideology (aside from the stimulus bill). The dude is just the ultimate opportunist. He threw Kennedy under the bus and came up with the "single bullet theory" just to further his own career.

I'm still not voting for him.

good to see the country swinging in the right direction (and by right, I mean left).

lol@republicans taking the majority next year. people are getting sick of democratic spending? thats why approval ratings are higher than they've been in 3 years?

Good for specter. If I were on a burning ship, I'd jump off too.

Because it was working so well with Bush

Yeah, let's go back to the policies that put the country in the biggest recession since the great depression.
