so the west is the kaiser souza of hip-hop;
still, you want some champions out there,
some recognition, right? sometimes there
is more power in playing the shadows.
i don't endorse all these cats biting us
without the props due but we getting
shit handled. look at how much more
the westside has influenced hollywood:
john singleton (from 'boys in the hood'
to '2 fast, 2 furious')
ice cube ('barbershop,' 'benjamins,' 'friday,'
'anaconda'–my favorite BAD movie–& so on)
mack 10 (several independant efforts)
dr. dre & snoop ('carwash,' 'half-baked,'
'training day')
the hughes brothers ('menace 2 society,'
'dead presidents,' 'from hell'–a breakout
film in that these 'urban' filmakers wasn't
making an 'urban' film)
ice-t ('new jack city' & a whole truckload
of shit since then)
tupac ('juice' to 'gang-related')
from the rest:
matty rich (who? he was jersey's answer
to singleton's 'boys in the hood' w/ his
own lesser 'straight out of brooklyn')
nick (forget his last name; think it's
cassavettes or sounds like that) who did
'new jersey drive' (great fuckin movie)
& 'illtown' w/ micheal rappaport
eve ('barbershop' & 'xxx')
queen latifah ('set it off' & this new
one, 'bringing down the house,' a
flick leftover from the 90's kid & play
era of blaxploitaion cinema that
somehow got the green light in
2002)
dmx ('belly,' 'cradle 2 the grave')
hype williams ('belly')
john leguizamo (from 'the pest' to
'empire')
...thats just for starters. out of the east coast
camp the only big impact made thus far is from
dmx. leguizamo comes in 2nd but w/ a spotty
record. the lah got herself an oscar
nomination but then again she did that
'house' movie–embarrassing. i'm looking
for big things from eve & that's about it.
from the west coast: ice-t has his
fingers in everything which tends to water
his shit down but the man is an undeniable
influence on everythang in the game–if not
for him half these other folks wouldn't be
here. the hughes brothers & singleton have
broke out from being 'urban' to just being
good film-makers. tupac: 'nuff said. he
would have taken an oscar had he stuck
around. ice-cube: friday alone made his
ticket & he keeps on coming w/ 'em.
from the middle of the u.s. we got
eminem & masta p's brief run in the
spotlight. eminem was good in '8
mile,' but it was hardly worth an
oscar nomination–that came from
the collective group of white folks who
can accept his brand of controversy
cause he looks like them–& masta p...
he scared the shit out of art-snobs w/
the impact of 'bout it' & the 'hook-up'
movie was actually good & funny but
he's fallen of the radar since then.
not that i don't want us to shine now,
who doesn't, but just to play a lil
devil's advocate & remind y'all of the
impact we still got on the game.
'nuff said.
