ThaG... what new artists do you consider "real" or "good" hip hop?

name 5, if you can
I don't like the word "real" because it's been abused too much over the years

But it is true that I have heard very little that I can honestly say I like in the last year or two. Around 2005 and 2006 there was a lot more good music. Everybody making Kanye West type of beats and ringtone tracks (plus Lil Wayne being the top "MC") is what killed whatever good hip-hop was coming out (aside from a few indie/backpack artists here and there who still make good music, but I have never been into those too much. I can see when the music is good though, even if I don't go on to listen to it a lot).

There has been two truly terrible periods in rap history IMO, the first one was around 2001-2003 when Ja Rule introduced the lollipop shit and everybody started making "thug ballads". Then when crunk music got popularized it was a little better for a few years.

I think now it is the second truly disastrous period (the ringtones, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and all their imitators). However, it's been shitty for 10 years now, and the "recovery periods" have not been periods of general great creativity, but rather somebody somewhere coming up with a fresh new idea, that gets old very quickly and that's it. The general quality trend is downwards and the next such period will be worse than the last one and so on.

What I can't understand is why there are so many people who still like the new music coming out. The only explanation I can think of is that they have no real musical memory and the music they listen to is the music of the moment, then it gets quickly forgotten regardless of its quality when something else comes out, and so on.

So what your saying is that niggas need to just say fuck it and rap for free? Dont you know it costs some money to put a album out?

Also just bc music isnt good to you dosent mean its not good. remember that
LOL. did you read what I posted???

I never said artists should rap for free, but if money is all they rap for, they should quit.

I distinguish art from business, you don't

maybe you are just getting too old,

or your falling for the "rap sucks" hype, which is a lot of times used for marketing

I wasnt talking about no album sells(your confused). You said hip hop is over and I was saying its not bc theres major money being generated in that field(in other words mahfuckas making a living on that shit). and if the money moving then a business is far from over.

Why you think the MC Donalds you work for has been running for so long bc major money is being generated by that company.
I didn't say rap is over and it will not be over when there's no money involved, it was well and alive when there were very little money involved, when the money came it started dying (like everything else)

Read this thread, it has some very strong points that are every relevant to hip-hop too

Hurrache,

this dude's whole life(at the moment) is based on complaining on stuff he cant control,

just letting you know that you arent gonna make him understand and will just go on circles

just thought id point it out

I figure that out now, Im done debating with dude he right he wins hip hop is over and ever rapper shouldnt worry about making a living paying bills they just need to make good music(in his eyes) rather they get chump changed or not.

Believe me, I am not falling for any hype, I do not base my opinion on what other say

It might be the former, but the point is that I don't like the music I hear, I think it is impossible for anybody who has followed hip-hop for some time and who actually uses his brain for something to like it, and there is nothing I can do to change the situation. It is not hating

What about paying your bills with something else? And leaving the music to those who have passion for it?

the money has always been there(look at teh 80's artists, niggas was flossing they gold jewelery and cars back then)

Those money did not come from rap or they only started flashing them in the late 80s when they were already going platinum (and actually making money of it because they did not have to spend 100K on a wack Scott Storch beat)

Anyway, point is, there was no 500-million rich 50 Cent back then to inspire young artists with his 500 millions, it was young artists becoming rappers because they had passion for it. Not all of them of course, but a lot, and enough. This is one of the reasons why we didn't have everybody rapping slow and the same back then, because when you have passion, you are much more creative

Most people are simpler than what you think

Hot Boys-era Lil Wayne was OK but they were ridiculed for "ruining hip-hop" although they were actually bringing something new to the table

Then he switched to The Carter, which is the gayest hip-hop image ever, even gayer than actual gay-MCs (those exist too) and not only he gets popular but he also gets critical recognition

It must be that we just live in a gay society....
